Trapped in Europe with air travel shut down during the COVID pandemic(流行?。﹊n 2020,Juan Ballestero had just one means to returns his native Argentina to be home with his parents—sailing across the Atlantic. He wanted to be reunited with his 82-year-old mother and his 90-year-old father. The 47-year-old did just that, sailing from Portugal on his 29-foot boat during a nearly three-month journey that included battling storms, dangerous waves and even escaping from what he thought were pirates off Africa's coast, and finally arrived in his hometown in June.
The Argentine man said he planned the trip in just 24 hours after learning that flights to his home country had been canceled.Ballestero, who lives in Spain, was in Portugal when the local government announced strict lockdown(封鎖)measures and the country was closed to the rest of the world. He grabbed the 200 euros he had saved, loaded his sailboat with 160 cans of food and a bottle of whiskey, and set sail.He made the journey because he was sure the lockdown measures were going to be in place for a long time and he wanted to be with his family soon.
He recalled being stopped by authorities and not allowed to enter Cape Verde in Africa to load up more food and fuel in case he needed to complete part of his journey with the boat's motor. He nearly got into a gunfight at night when a ship with bright lights seemed to be following him so he had to go as fast as possible.Besides,Ballestero almost lost the mast(桅桿)of the boat when the wave brushed him from above. The boat went over and a cable broke.Luckily,he got his boat fixed in Brazil.
Ballestero said the important thing was his reunion with his parents. "I'll plant a garden and buy three chickens.I'll make it through the winter with the old people," he said. "I want to be with the family."

  • 1.At 1,345 meters above sea level,Ben Nevis is not the world's most difficult mountain to climb. But things get considerably tricky if instead of hiking shoes you put on a pair of 5-inch high heels, especially if you're a guy.One English teenager recently proved that it was not impossible.
Ben Conway,a 19-year-old art student from London, recently took up the challenge as a way to stand out in an application for a scholarship for the School of Communication Arts in Brixton. He started his unusual high-heel climb at 8 am,on June 27,and was joined by Callum MacKenzie Allen,a friend from his art foundation year, who videotaped the whole thing for a two-minute video that was used as his application project. The whole climb took five hours and wasn't the smoothest experience.
Halfway up Ben Nevis, one of his shoes broke,so he had to tape the shoes to his feet to make sure they stayed on.The weather didn't make it easy for him either,as he claimed that it rained pretty much the whole time, and he had to go against 40 to 50 miles an hour winds.Due to these difficult conditions,Ben and his friend had to turn back after reaching 900 meters up the mountain.
Besides providing a unique art school application project, the high-heel climb also allowed the 19-year-old to raise some money for worthy causes (事業(yè)),like Sal's Shoes, which provides footwear for barefoot children around the world.
"Raising money for charity brings happiness to people's lives and if I can do something ridiculous and bring someone happiness, then that's what it's all about," Ben said.

  • 3.    My father really dislikes my stepfather,Mike, and is always calling him names, saying what a "good-for-nothing" guy he is.Mike knows about his name-calling because sometimes when my father comes to pick me up,he'll say inconsiderate things right in front of my stepfather like, "Is what's-his-name going to pick you up after the game,or am I supposed to bring you home?"
Even though it's rude,my stepfather doesn't hold it against my father. "I'll pick up Shawn at 3:30," he'll answer. Nor does Mike make a big deal out of my father's inconsiderate attitude towards him. He lets the comments go.
I ask my stepfather if the way my father treats him bothers or upsets him. "Oh,not really," he says. "You don't always have to be right,as long as you do what's right." My father's taunts(嘲笑) don't bother Mike because he likes himself. My dad's opinion doesn't change the way Mike feels about himself.
I really admire Mike. He's so good to my mother. And what a good father he is to me!I appreciate all the things he does for me,like teaching me to throw a fastball and helping me with my homework without becoming impatient like my father does.Mike even volunteered at my school's carnival(狂歡節(jié)) this year.No other stepfathers were there.
Though I would never tell my real father that I think my stepfather is one of the nicest guys I know,he is.I'm happy to make Mike my stepfather.Sometimes,I even call Mike "Dad" because he acts like a dad to me.In my eyes,my stepfather is a really great guy.
