It was a late Saturday afternoon in early March, and I was sweating gracelessly,in search of the only gift my son said he wanted from Los Angeles:a map to the homes of the stars.
I was here for meetings in Westwood, near the UCLA Medical Centre.Should I wander a little?Try to find one of the treasured maps?
From the front of the hotel taxi line,a cheerful driver said, "No problem.Map vendors(小 販) are everywhere!" Before long,we saw a hand-painted sandwich board saying:Star Maps. The taxi stopped.A fellow approached with a thin folded sheet and said: "Ten dollars. "
Ten dollars.American! With righteous assurance,I informed him, "That's too much. " The map man shrugged. We continued, whizzing past the Beverly Hills Hotel into West Hollywood. The driver dropped me at the House of Blues, encouraging me to stroll.I began walking, certain I would find a low-cost star map soon.
I was wrong. There was hardly anybody on the street. There didn't seem to be many real stores, just cars and bars.No maps.No stars.Blocks passed. The sun began to sink.At the edge of West Hollywood, another fellow appeared ahead, selling star maps to a car full of teenage girls.
Ten dollars jye.ai.Still too much.Forgot it.My son would understand.Time to go back to Westwood. That night,I called my wife. " Did you get one of those maps to the stars? He's been talking about nothing else. " This news was hard to ignore. But it was late.
Morning was coming. There would be last try. After I checked out,the first taxi in the hotel line was an old Chevy driven by a skinny guy from North Carolina. At nine in the morning, map vendors were nowhere to be found,
"You know, " said the driver, " The guys with the maps just aren't up yet!" He was right.
"Forget it.Let's go to the airport. "
"Well, " said the driver, "I could mail you one if you like. "
Sure.Trust this guy?I might as well toss cash onto the freeway. But exiting the taxi,I recognized my last chance.I handed the driver $13 and my business card.

If there's one thing I can't stand people saying,it's,"I'm no good at anything...I don't have any talent." I just don't buy that at all.To me,everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find,it does exist. There was a time,of course, when I didn't believe that. What changed my mind was a seemingly small event that took place back in 1953.
At that time I was a high school student.I was a funny-looking skinny little boy named Eugene Orowitz, who weighed barely 100 pounds.I was a good student, but as far as I was concerned,in just about every other department I was a loser.I desperately wanted to fit in,to be something and do something well. But I hadn't found anything I was good at.One sunny afternoon, our gym class went out to the school's running track. The teacher taught us all various track and field events.I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin(標(biāo)槍).Suddenly something inside me began saying,"Try it!Try it!" I had to wait my turn, though, because several others wanted a break at the javelin too.Shy and scared,I watched them, trying not to look too eager. Finally, when everyone had had a chance to throw—the best throw going about 30 yards—I looked at the teacher.
"Hey,Orowitz, you want to try?" he asked.
Embarrassed,I looked down, but managed to nod my head.
"Well, come on then," he said impatiently, and handed me the javelin.Behind me I could hear some of my classmates laughing. As I grasped the javelin in my hand,I was seized with a strange feeling—a new-found excitement. For some crazy reason,I was relaxed over what I was about to do,even though I'd never done it before.I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let the thing go.The same voice that had urged me into throwing it,now told me it was a good throw.

I had just a very wonderful day.Although all my days were always wonderful to me,that day was completely different. There was a bulletin(公告)board saying that they would need to find volleyball players for the girls and I was so happy!I have been loving playing volleyball since my mother taught me how to play.I was so excited that I couldn't wait to play! Then I read more what was on that bulletin board, which said that here would be an audition(試演)after three weeks! "Three weeks?" I thought about it I did know how to play volleyball but I was not much of an expert in doing it but I still wanted to try.
After that I was determined to practice volleyball every day.I practiced hard again and again each day and never got tired of doing the same practice through all the days, and finally, the day came.I was so prepared for this and hurried to the gym to the audition. When I had reached the gym,I was surprised to see that 12 or 14 girls were lining up and I guessed I was the last one to arrive. Then our audition began. Some of the girls failed to pass the audition and some passed.
There was only one position left to complete the 6 girls to join the volleyball team and suddenly I felt nervous because the person in front of me was going to take the serve(發(fā)球).Then the girl hit the ball and then the ball didn't pass over the net!The girl hit her forehead and left, leaving me standing in the middle of the court.
Then the coach spoke, "Okay, you serve." She handed me the ball and I caught it with my hands. As the ball was in my hands,my hands were suddenly sweating and so was I!

One winter Sunday, my little sister, Colleen, and I built the greatest snowman ever. We gave him a carrot nose, beautiful hat, cozy scarf and gloves. He was a masterpiece(杰作).
The next morning when looking outside, we smiled lovingly at him over our meal. We gave him a high-five as we passed by on our way to school. A lot of kids went past our house, so he was the hot topic at our school that morning. It was our pride!
The day dragged on until finally we could rush home. But as our yard came into sight, we saw something wrong. The snowman was gone! We only found a broken stick here, a torn glove there and balls of snow everywhere. Worst of all, the snowman's once-proud carrot nose lay limp(無力的) and half-eaten.
What had happened? We were both astonished and angry. But then, we were only kids, who wouldn't have anything taking away our happiness. Actually we knew only one thing: Our snowman would rise again. And so we rebuilt him.
The next day we came home to find another mess on the front lawn(草坪). For the rest of the week, the destruction was repeated daily. Each afternoon we'd return to find our snowman had fallen apart, and then we built again.
By Saturday morning, we had a plan. We borrowed a really big bucket(水桶) from Mom, filled it with water and left it outside. The next morning, it was frozen solid. We packed snow all around the ice block as the base(底座) of the snowman. Then we built the other parts of it once again. The trap was set, and we waited for the snowman bullies(破壞者) to come.
