During the Great Depression in the 1930s,my grandparents Milas and Mary Dunaway lived well on their small farm — always busy with gardening, beekeeping or one of their many other projects. They also owned a tiny country store.Almost every day,you could find my brothers,my cousins and me hanging around our grandparents' place, eyeballing Grandmother's teacakes and other goodies.Grandpa,on the other hand, was the person we would try to move quickly to avoid, because he always had dozens of things just waiting for us.
One fine spring day, when Cousin Mary and I had just planned a full day of playing around when Grandpa saw us. "Come on," he said. "I need you to help plant soybeans(大豆) ." We were a little afraid of him,so we had to follow along. The field, which wasn't really very big, looked like a hundred acres(英畝)to Mary and me.
Grandpa showed us how he wanted the soybeans dropped into the furrow(犁溝) he made in each row. This was fun for a few minutes, but we quickly got tired of dropping soybean after soybean, evenly spaced, into the soil. The job seemed endless. When we began dropping the soybeans too thickly,he would correct us.Under the watchful eye of Grandpa,we planted carefully behind him, soybean after soybean, slowly down the rows.
But as he began to trust us to do it right,Grandpa worked his way a good distance ahead of us.Suddenly,as we looked toward him,Mary and I noticed a hollow stump(空心的樹樁)up ahead that had not been cleared from the field. That's when a trick started. We looked at the soybeans, looked at the stump and looked at Grandpa.Walking slowly and heavily along, one tiny soybean at a time,we came near to the stump.Once we reached it we quickly put more than a gallon of soybeans into the stump and began covering the whole thing with dirt.Just then Grandpa turned and looked our way.

If there's one thing I can't stand people saying,it's,"I'm no good at anything...I don't have any talent." I just don't buy that at all.To me,everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find,it does exist. There was a time,of course, when I didn't believe that. What changed my mind was a seemingly small event that took place back in 1953.
At that time I was a high school student.I was a funny-looking skinny little boy named Eugene Orowitz, who weighed barely 100 pounds.I was a good student, but as far as I was concerned,in just about every other department I was a loser.I desperately wanted to fit in,to be something and do something well. But I hadn't found anything I was good at.One sunny afternoon, our gym class went out to the school's running track. The teacher taught us all various track and field events.I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin(標(biāo)槍).Suddenly something inside me began saying,"Try it!Try it!" I had to wait my turn, though, because several others wanted a break at the javelin too.Shy and scared,I watched them, trying not to look too eager. Finally, when everyone had had a chance to throw—the best throw going about 30 yards—I looked at the teacher.
"Hey,Orowitz, you want to try?" he asked.
Embarrassed,I looked down, but managed to nod my head.
"Well, come on then," he said impatiently, and handed me the javelin.Behind me I could hear some of my classmates laughing. As I grasped the javelin in my hand,I was seized with a strange feeling—a new-found excitement. For some crazy reason,I was relaxed over what I was about to do,even though I'd never done it before.I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let the thing go.The same voice that had urged me into throwing it,now told me it was a good throw.

I watched as the spear took off.My heart quickened______
That night I took the javelin home with me.______

I had just a very wonderful day.Although all my days were always wonderful to me,that day was completely different. There was a bulletin(公告)board saying that they would need to find volleyball players for the girls and I was so happy!I have been loving playing volleyball since my mother taught me how to play.I was so excited that I couldn't wait to play! Then I read more what was on that bulletin board, which said that here would be an audition(試演)after three weeks! "Three weeks?" I thought about it I did know how to play volleyball but I was not much of an expert in doing it but I still wanted to try.
After that I was determined to practice volleyball every day.I practiced hard again and again each day and never got tired of doing the same practice through all the days, and finally, the day came.I was so prepared for this and hurried to the gym to the audition. When I had reached the gym,I was surprised to see that 12 or 14 girls were lining up and I guessed I was the last one to arrive. Then our audition began. Some of the girls failed to pass the audition and some passed.
There was only one position left to complete the 6 girls to join the volleyball team and suddenly I felt nervous because the person in front of me was going to take the serve(發(fā)球).Then the girl hit the ball and then the ball didn't pass over the net!The girl hit her forehead and left, leaving me standing in the middle of the court.
Then the coach spoke, "Okay, you serve." She handed me the ball and I caught it with my hands. As the ball was in my hands,my hands were suddenly sweating and so was I!

One winter Sunday, my little sister, Colleen, and I built the greatest snowman ever. We gave him a carrot nose, beautiful hat, cozy scarf and gloves. He was a masterpiece(杰作).
The next morning when looking outside, we smiled lovingly at him over our meal. We gave him a high-five as we passed by on our way to school. A lot of kids went past our house, so he was the hot topic at our school that morning. It was our pride!
The day dragged on until finally we could rush home. But as our yard came into sight, we saw something wrong. The snowman was gone! We only found a broken stick here, a torn glove there and balls of snow everywhere. Worst of all, the snowman's once-proud carrot nose lay limp(無(wú)力的) and half-eaten.
What had happened? We were both astonished and angry. But then, we were only kids, who wouldn't have anything taking away our happiness. Actually we knew only one thing: Our snowman would rise again. And so we rebuilt him.
The next day we came home to find another mess on the front lawn(草坪). For the rest of the week, the destruction was repeated daily. Each afternoon we'd return to find our snowman had fallen apart, and then we built again.
By Saturday morning, we had a plan. We borrowed a really big bucket(水桶) from Mom, filled it with water and left it outside. The next morning, it was frozen solid. We packed snow all around the ice block as the base(底座) of the snowman. Then we built the other parts of it once again. The trap was set, and we waited for the snowman bullies(破壞者) to come.
