  • 2.The United States of America is the most culturally diverse country in the world in terms of culture, religion, ethnicity and sexual orientation. As a combination of various races and cultures,America is home to all.The culture here is so unique that citizens can be just as proud of their original cultural heritage as they are to be Americans.
What is now the US was initially inhabited by native people until the land was settled by native European groups and African slaves.Since the 20th century, the country has become a heaven for people from all over the globe.
The arrival of immigrants has shifted populations from rural areas into cities because immigrants tend to settle in urban areas. At present,81 percent of the inhabitants in the US live in cities.
Cultural and ethnic diversity adds a unique flavor to cities that is expressed through distinct neighborhoods, restaurants, places of worship, museums, nightlife and multicultural learning environments.
Unique musical forms, such as jazz, rock and roll,Chicano music, and the blues, grow in the US by mixing a variety of culturally distinct musical traditions to create a new form.

  • 3.Authors Kyle Kurpinski and Terry D.Johnson pretty much have me convinced that human cloning is quite possible and is a future certainty.Kurpinski and Johnson are both bioengineering experts;unlike similar scientists you have seen in the movies, they both have a sense of humor. What surprises me is that Kurpinski and Johnson are able to take something as complicated as DNA and make it understandable.
The book How to Defeat Your Own Clone teaches us what is now known as DNA encoded, how that happens, and why people with similar DNA don't look or act the same. The book not only helps us get a basic understanding of what DNA and its purpose are,but also explains cloning and stem cell (干細(xì)胞)research. It occurs to me that a lot of people who are against stem cell research don't know what they are protesting about. The authors provide a history of cloning,as well as information about stem cells.
The real fun starts when the authors attack various myths about cloning.Obviously, too many people have been watching too many bad movies and television programs.Remember they're just fictional stories. If,somehow, scientists manage to clone you.Twenty years from now your clone isn't going to kill you.Among the myths explored and exploded are that a clone will know everything you know and will act as you do,that heads which are cut off can be kept alive, and that a clone has no belly button (肚臍).Many of the myths are ridiculous but many people believe them.
Kurpinski and Johnson also detail some bioimprovements "that really work".You see, genes can be controlled to help you sleep better and become smarter, healthier, and taller.Well…not exactly you,but future generations.
If you do wind up in a battle with your own clone, who will be considerably younger than you, remember that it is not you and that it doesn't know what you know.

(1)Many bioengineering experts in the movies are

    A.humorous
    B.wealthy
    C.serious
    D.crazy
(2)Which of the following things are in the book How to Defeat Your Own Clone?

a.What DNA and its purpose are.
    b.Who is against cloning.
    c.The history of cloning.
    d.The myths about cloning.
    e.The disadvantages of cloning.
    A.a(chǎn),b,e
    B.a(chǎn),c,d
    C.b,d,e
    D.b,c,d
(3)We can learn from the passage that biotechnology

A.has been banned in many countries around the world
B.is being used to improve one's intelligence right now
C.can help improve the physical condition of future generations
D.is sure to cure any disease in the near future
(4)According to the passage,a clone of you

    A.will want to kill you
    B.knows whatever you know
    C.has no belly button
    D.will be younger than you

No Time With a broad smile on her lips,15-year old Sirin rushed to her mom to show off her new painting. But mom raised her eyebrows with eyes wide open, and spoke in an impatient tone, "No time, baby.Right now I am busy with an important talk.Just wait for some time,OK?"
Holding her oil painting, she frowned (皺眉),and then searched for her dad.
"Dad,see what I have done," Sirin announced aloud in a thrilling voice. Her dad turned around while adjusting his tie, grinned at her,and showed his thumbs up!
Immediately, blowing her two cheeks,Sirin replied angrily, "Dad,you haven't seen it yet."
He smiled at her saying, "No time, baby.I will see it later." He just patted her back lovingly, kissed her forehead, and rushed for his office.
She was not a kid to be pleased with simple gesture or smile. She stood there for a few seconds, and then stormed off to her own bedroom.Hot air was blowing from her nostrils (鼻孔);her face turned into apple red.She threw the painting on the table, slammed (把……砰地關(guān)上) the door and threw herself on her bed.
"Why is everybody so busy?" She recalled thousands of incidents that hurt her in pre-school,middle school and even in high school too!She assumed at least her own family members would give some values to her thoughts, but they were no exception.Unconsciously, her eyes were filled with tears.
The knocking sound on the door put a sudden brake to her thought. Her mom was calling her for dinner.Sirin deliberately came late to join them. She kept silent and didn't look at anyone, scratching the table mat with her nail. Her mom was puzzled at the unusual behavior.Suddenly, the morning incident clicked in her mind.Softly, she asked, "Honey, did I do anything wrong?"
Para 1:At this very moment,Sirin could no longer resist her anger._________
Para 2:When back from school the next day,Sirin was surprised to see her beautifully-decorated paining on the wall.________
