  • 1.                                                          Paint Recycling Program
Our Paint Recycling Program was the first of its kind in the Gulf South. We collect and recycle usable latex (膠乳) and water-based paint, mixing it into new,one-of-a-kind colors.
       About our paint
Our recycled paint mixtures are used in both indoor and outdoor environments.Paint is mixed weekly and new colors are available every few days.We recommend purchasing enough paint to complete your project from the start,as specific colors may run out and cannot be re-created.In addition,it is good practice to mix all paint together to ensure color matching.
       Recycle your paint
Beginning on July 30,2020,community members may drop off usable paint for recycling to the Green Project (2831 Marais St.) between 11am-5pm,Thursday to Saturday.Drop-offs are accepted via the double doors on Marais St.
       Paint drop-off guidelines:

?Paint must be in its original container with a readable label.
?Paint cans should be at least 1/3 full or more.
?Dried-out paint cans cannot be accepted.
?Limit to 10 gallons (加侖) per drop-off,per household or business.Households or businesses dropping off 11 or more gallons of paint may make a $1 donation for every additional gallon dropped off.

  • 2.    Essence Starks waited for her three children to come home from school last month. She stood inside their St.Louis living room next to a large object covered with a blanket. After they walked in,Starks threw off the blanket, revealing a shiny upright piano — something her family had wanted for years.
Several months ago,Starks was researching the cost of used pianos online and she came across a nonprofit group in St.Louis called Pianos for People. The organization pairs donated pianos with families and community centers in need and covers the 100 to $500 cost of delivery by professional movers.Pianos for People also pays to tune the instrument. She filled out an application online and learned in two weeks that a Kawai upright could be delivered to her house. She also learned that her children could take free lessons at the Pianos for People music school.
Pianos for People is among several organizations around the country that give away free pianos to families that otherwise wouldn't be able to afford them. The St.Louis nonprofit group was started in 2012 by Tom and Jeanne Townsend after their oldest child,Alex,a promising musician, died in a car accident when he was in college.Tom Townsend died in 2019 of cancer, but Jeanne Townsend,63,still serves on the Pianos for People board of directors.
While pianos have long been considered luxury (奢侈的) items,Pianos for People receives more requests to pick up unwanted pianos than applications for free instruments. Many people are empty nesters looking to downsize, and families with children often have competing interests."People aren't playing pianos as much as they used to,"Matt Brinkmann, the organization's executive director(執(zhí)行董事),said."Often,a piano is something that has been in the family for generations, and should be somewhere where it's played and appreciated."

(2)What do we know about Pianos for People?

    A.It guarantees to tune pianos.
    B.It charges for piano lessons.
C.It sends piano teachers to families.
    D.It pays transport costs partly.
(3)What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?

    A.Introduce a new topic.
    B.Offer convincing examples.
    C.Provide a background story.
    D.Summarize the previous paragraphs.
(4)Who are the main donors of Pianos for People?

    A.Professional tuners.
    B.Community centers.

  • 3.    For years, scuba (水肺) divers have reported unusual attacks from sea snakes. This behavior confused scientists because land snakes prefer to avoid humans, rather than attack them. Why would their cousins in the sea be any different? Now,a study published in Scientific Reports has revealed that the snakes may not be trying to attack humans at all.
The snakes most often reported to"attack"divers are the highly poisonous yellow-green sea snakes. They can grow to be more than six feet long. This can make it particularly frightening for the divers. To investigate the mystery, the researchers turned to a data set collected nearly 30 years ago.As a PhD student, study author Tim Lynch made a total of 188 scuba dives in the Great Barrier Reef between May of 1994 and July of 1995.During these dives, which lasted approximately 30 minutes,he would record the number of sea snakes that approached him and the details of these encounters.Every time a snake approached,he would move to the seafloor and remain still until the snake left him alone.
Analyzing Lynch's experience led the study authors to conclude that the attacks were a case of what they call"mistaken identity".Most of the approaches took place during the snakes' mating season, and males were more likely to approach during this time.
While it might seem strange, the study authors argue that sea snake evolution (進(jìn)化) makes it possible.Land snakes typically locate females with the help of chemicals deposited (存積) along the ground, but this type of location is more difficult underwater, where the chemicals the females release are not water-soluble,meaning it would be more difficult for males to locate them from a distance.Further,yellow-green sea snakes do not see as well as land snakes, which makes it difficult for them to spot females.
The explanation provided by study author Rick Shine answers the question of what divers should do if they find a sea snake rapidly swimming their way. "Don't try to hit the snake.Just give the snake a chance to figure out who you are and once it does it will likely head off,"says Shine.

(1)What does the underlined part"the mystery"in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.How long sea snakes can grow.
B.The similarity between sea snakes and land snakes.
C.Which snakes tend to attack humans.
D.The reason for sea snakes attacking divers.
(2)What did the study find out about the sea snakes?

    A.They were trapped in scubas.
B.They mistook Lynch for a female snake.
C.They attacked each other during the mating season.
D.They ran after Lynch continuously during the dives.
(3)What does paragraph 4 mainly discuss?

A.How sea snakes break rules of evolution.
B.Why sea snakes have poor eyesight.
C.Why sea snakes can't find females easily.
D.When female snakes don't release chemicals.
(4)What should a diver do when a sea snake approaches?

A.Seek help from the rescue center.
B.Ignore it and keep on swimming.
C.Lead it to the shore in no time.
D.Stay calm and let it check him out.

  • 9.閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
We were headed for the nationally famous Blue Owl Restaurant and Bakery, which offered a sweetheart dinner that was well worth the price. We had decided to enjoy ourselves. The weather report had called for freezing rain, but not until long after midnight. We would be safely home by then. But then,as we approached the restaurant, there was a downpour of freezing rain.We were closer to the restaurant than home so it seemed better to proceed in that direction.
By the time we arrived, the street in front of the restaurant was a sheet of ice.The parking lot was also a sheet of ice and in front of each entry ramp (斜坡) was a pool of water.I couldn't pull in and even if I parked on the street,we would never be able to get out and walk on that ice.
A lady walked towards us.She called out,"Were you wanting to go in there?"She motioned to the parking lot.I nodded and said,"We can't go in there. My husband recently suffered a stroke (中風(fēng)) and I'm an amputee (被截肢者).I'm afraid we'll fall."
That lady happened to be Mary Hostetter, the owner of the Blue Owl Restaurant and Bakery. She said,"We have the salt truck coming any minute, but that won't do a lot of good right now."Mary quickly came up with a plan."Just pull the car in front of the restaurant steps and I'll walk you in.I will park your car for you and you'll be safe."I pulled the car up to the bottom of the steps. She locked arms with us,one at a time, and walked us up the steps to the door. Then she left quickly.
A few minutes later, she handed me our keys, saying,"After you have dinner and when you are ready to leave, give me your keys.I will bring your car out and put you both back in it."I was thanking her when she quickly turned and went back to her work as a hostess.
    注意:
    (1)續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150 左右;
    (2)請(qǐng)按如下格式在相應(yīng)位置作答。
