The best Christmas gifts for children are not always toys.Whenever I think of the true meaning of Christmas,I always remember what happened in one second-grade classroom at Tar River Elementary School in Franklinton,North Carolina.
When a guy in a Santa suit showed up at the school,he brought every one of the students the exact toy they had asked for in their letters."Did everybody get what they wanted?"the"Santa Claus"asked the kids."Yes,thank you!"they said.Every kid received what they had asked for, except Bethany Arnold, who didn't ask for a single toy.In her letter,Bethany Arnold wrote,"Dear Santa,my daddy is in Iraq.Could you bring him home for Christmas? That would be the best gift of all."
Bethany Arnold admitted she was asking for something that was kind of tough."Well,it's not easy to go around the world in one night, either. And I've never wanted anything more than that/'she said.Bethany's father,Wyndal Arnold, was an engineer in Iraq, repairing the country's electrical infrastructure (基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施)."I understand that he has to stay there and help people there, but I haven't seen him for a long time,"Bethany Arnold said.In the last two years, she has seen her father less than two weeks.Last time they saw each other, while he was on leave in.Germany, they exchanged heart-shaped key chains (鏈條).She carried his, while 6,000 miles away,he held onto hers."I told her,'next time I see you,I'll give your heart back,'''Wyndal Arnold said.
Unfortunately, bringing two hearts together at Christmas isn't always the most important thing for the government. Therefore, this year Bethany Arnold decided to ask Santa Claus for help. Finally, her wish came true."Daddy!"she said,as she recognized her father in a Santa suit. She hugged him tightly."Are you sure you don't want anything else?"her father asked."I'm just so happy that you're home,"Bethany Arnold replied.

  • 1.For several days Ⅰ(Jane Eyre) saw little of Mr.Rochester.One evening,I was invited to talk to him after dinner. There was a smile on his lips, and his eyes were shining brightly. As I was looking at him,he suddenly turned around and asked me, "Do you think I'm handsome,Miss Eyre?"
The answer somehow slipped from my tongue before I realized it: "No,sir."
"Ah,you are really unusual! You look like a quiet, serious little person, but you can be almost rude."
"Sir,I'm sorry.I shouldn't have given an immediate answer to such a question about appearances;I should have said that beauty doesn't matter,or something like that."
"No,you shouldn't!I see,you criticize my appearance, and then you stick a sly penknife under my ear!You have honesty and feeling. There are not many girls like you.Perhaps you have awful faults to counterbalance(抵消) your few good points."

"Don't be afraid of me,Miss Eyre," he continued." You don't relax or laugh very much, perhaps because of the effect Lowood has had on you.But in time you will be more natural when you're with me,and laugh, and speak freely. You're like a bird in a cage. When you get out of the cage, you'll fly very high.Good night."

  • 3.To me,life without music would not be exciting.I realize that this is not true for everybody. Many people get along quite well without going to the concert, and listening to the record. But music plays an important part in everyone's life, whether he realizes it or not.Try to imagine, for example, what films or TV plays would be like without music.Would the feelings, the moving plot, and the greatest interests,be so exciting or dramatic?I'm not sure about it.
Now,we have been speaking of music in its more common meaning----the kind of music we hear in the concert hall. But if we look at some parts of music more closely,we discover them in our everyday life too----in the rhythm of the sea,the melody of a bird in the woods and so on.So music surely has meaning for everyone,in some way or other. And,of course,it has special meaning for those who have spent all their lives working on playing or writing music.
It is well said, "Through music a child enters into a world of beauty, expresses himself from his heart, feels the joy of doing things alone, learns to take care of others, develops his mind and makes his body strong."

(1)What does the writer say more about in the text?

    A.Life full of music.
    B.The importance of music.
    C.Life without music.
    D.The development of music.
(2)From the text,we learn that many people

A.go to the concert instead of enjoying music
B.get along quite well without music
C.don't realize the importance of music
D.think music would be less exciting than films
(3)What does the underlined word "melody" mean in the text?

    A.flying
    B.living
    C.looking
    D.singing
(4)From the last paragraph,we learn that music

A.is very necessary for our everyday life
    B.is very important,especially for children
C.can make our life exciting and dramatic
    D.can enter another beautiful world
