  • 2.The best Christmas gifts for children are not always toys.Whenever I think of the true meaning of Christmas,I always remember what happened in one second-grade classroom at Tar River Elementary School in Franklinton,North Carolina.
When a guy in a Santa suit showed up at the school,he brought every one of the students the exact toy they had asked for in their letters."Did everybody get what they wanted?"the"Santa Claus"asked the kids."Yes,thank you!"they said.Every kid received what they had asked for, except Bethany Arnold, who didn't ask for a single toy.In her letter,Bethany Arnold wrote,"Dear Santa,my daddy is in Iraq.Could you bring him home for Christmas? That would be the best gift of all."
Bethany Arnold admitted she was asking for something that was kind of tough."Well,it's not easy to go around the world in one night, either. And I've never wanted anything more than that/'she said.Bethany's father,Wyndal Arnold, was an engineer in Iraq, repairing the country's electrical infrastructure (基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施)."I understand that he has to stay there and help people there, but I haven't seen him for a long time,"Bethany Arnold said.In the last two years, she has seen her father less than two weeks.Last time they saw each other, while he was on leave in.Germany, they exchanged heart-shaped key chains (鏈條).She carried his, while 6,000 miles away,he held onto hers."I told her,'next time I see you,I'll give your heart back,'''Wyndal Arnold said.
Unfortunately, bringing two hearts together at Christmas isn't always the most important thing for the government. Therefore, this year Bethany Arnold decided to ask Santa Claus for help. Finally, her wish came true."Daddy!"she said,as she recognized her father in a Santa suit. She hugged him tightly."Are you sure you don't want anything else?"her father asked."I'm just so happy that you're home,"Bethany Arnold replied.

(1)What can we learn about Bethany Arnold from Paragraph 2?

A.She missed her father very much.
B.She wrote a lot of letters to her father.
C.She asked Santa Claus to send her to Iraq.

    D.Difficult.
(3)What do the words of Bethany Arnold show?

A.Santa Claus was a very kind person.
B.She believed Santa Claus could help her.
C.Santa Claus was very busy on Christmas Eve.

  • 3.Researchers have found some creatures below Earth's surface.Scientists may not have to wait long to use the lessons learned from these underground creatures to search for signs of life in space.
Other planets and moons (衛(wèi)星) have much worse conditions on their surface than those on Earth."This means that if we are to find life elsewhere in space,it's going to be below the surface,"says Tori Hoehler, who works to study life on Earth and in space.Life that would die on the surface of other planets or moons might be able to survive deep below. And reactions between underground rocks and water might provide the food needed to feed them. But scientists need a closer look.NASA,a US government organization that does research into space and organizes space travel, will start a task on a moon called Europa in the next five to ten years. That could study whether it might be able to support life.
Hoehler also wonders if there might be creatures living deep below the surface of Mars.Right now,it's hard for life to survive on that planet's surface. After all,it has almost no atmosphere (大氣).It's also really cold and has no liquid water. But a long time ago, water may have run across Mars. And a thick atmosphere might have covered the planet. If there was life on the surface at that time, maybe it went underground later."Down below it would have been nice and warm with plenty of water and plenty of energy,"says Hoehler.Under a condition like this, life might exist (存在) but still hide itself there, waiting for us to dig it out.
Scientists have been learning about Mars for years. So far, nothing has ever been done except for moving on the surface of the Red Planet. In 2018,however,the European Space Agency's ExoMars Mission-a program to examine the environment of Mars-will get a deeper look.ExoMars plans to go only about 2 meters (6.5 feet) down. That's probably not deep enough to find life. But it might find signs that life once existed.

(1)What does the author mainly want to show in Paragraph 1?

A.Life found below Earth's surface may help find life in space.
B.Scientists can learn lessons from life below Earth's surface.
C.Life has been found below Earth's surface.
D.Signs of life in space will be found.
(2)Why does the author mention the conditions on the surface of other planets and moons?

A.To show that they won't hold life on them.
B.To show Earth is different from other planets.
C.To help us know about other planets and moons.
D.To show it's necessary to go deeper to find life on them.
(3)What will NASA do on Europa?

A.Go some meters down its surface.
B.Learn about its conditions for life.
    C.Collect rocks on it.
    D.Find life on it.
(4)What do we know about Mars according to Hoehler?

    A.Water once ran across it.
B.Life can be surely found on it.
C.There is always no life on its surface.
D.Its underground condition may be good for life to live.
