  • 12.The term "graffiti" is an Italian word meaning scratching or scribbling(亂涂).It entered the English language in the 1850s,specifically to describe the casual wall writing that experts found in Pompeii and the Roman tombs.Originally a term used only in ancient scribbling, the word has undergone considerable expansion of meaning in the past 75 years so that it now refers to any written message on a wall.Graffiti are characterized by their casualness;if they were more formal, they would be known as inscriptions(銘文).
The first piece of graffiti was found on one of the walls of the city Pompeii, which was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.It was one of 1,600 pieces of graffiti uncovered in Pompeii during a dig in the 19th century. Not surprisingly, there is much evidence of graffiti writing on the pyramid and temples of ancient Egypt. It is likely that ever since people have had walls and materials to scratch or paint with, they have been engaged in this simplest form of communication.
The writing of graffiti gives people a unique opportunity to achieve some kind of public audience. Thus short poems, declarations of love, pieces of political and revolutionary polemic(論戰(zhàn)),and criticisms of institutions and people form a significant part of graffiti.
Apart from its usefulness in terms of self-expression,graffiti is also a valuable source for historians. There is always the possibility that historical events may be recorded by the presence of graffiti.Perhaps the most interesting example of this is the graffiti relating to the gladiatorial(角斗士) contests held in Pompeii.Graffiti can also give us a unique view into the daily life and customs of a people, for its casual expression encourages the recording of details that more formal writing would tend to ignore.
In the late 1970s,graffiti became popular.A thought written on a toilet wall in Wolverhampton can now be read in Chicago or Adelaide. In its own way, this is probably the most fascinating example of McLuhan's concept of "the global village". We now have a worldwide toilet wall.

C.Graffiti made the ancient city Pompeii famous.

(3)What does the third and fourth paragraphs mainly tell us?

    A.Graffiti's great value.
    B.Graffiti's features.
    C.Graffiti's way of expression.
D.Graffiti's connection with people's daily life.
(4)The graffiti relating to the gladiatorial contests is mentioned in the passage to prove that

    A.graffiti can show people's customs
B.graffiti can provide valuable historical evidence
C.graffiti was mainly used to record important events
D.graffiti can provide more detailed information than formal writing
(5)The underlined sentence in the last paragraph implies that

A.the presence of graffiti makes the world closely connected
B.the concept of "the global village" is famous worldwide

  • 14.Tasked with photographing one of the world's rarest big cats, you go deep into the jungle of Southeast Asia and set up a camera trap.Back at base camp, you look through the images it captures.identifying monkeys, otters and finally what you've been searching for:the mysterious clouded lcopard.
Now you can engage with all this without having to leave the comfort of your own home.A new mobile game Unseen Empire turns one of the largest-ever wildlife camera trap studies into a playable experience. It is based on an ongoing,decade-long camera trap study by Professor David Macdonald and his team at the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit at Oxford University. The game is divided into different levels, each level taking place in a different location around the world. As you progress through the game, you can update your camera equipment to capture better images and unlock new locations to explore.
Unseen Empire uses a significant number of real photographs from the study and allows players to identify species within this rapidly degrading environment.Players take on the role of a researcher in a real scientific study and the photographs can help them better understand wildlife conservation science. To understand the clouded leopard's habitat,6 million camera trap photographs captured in the study are used in the game. They are not only attractive but there's something just incredibly raw and real about capturing these animals' entirely candid (搶拍的) moments.
While the game is free and doesn't generate donations, the hope is that Unseen Empire can provide new ways for people to engage with endangered animals."If you don't have any encounter or experience with elements of nature, then what motivation can you have to take a personal interest in it?"says Macdonald.
"I would like to think that engagement with this game will lead to a feeling of value, which will affect how they think about nature,"says Macdonald."So,in that sense,we'd like to be part of a revolution on how people view the role of humanity, alongside the wider environment."

(1)What is the purpose of the first paragraph?

    A.To show love of photography.
B.To explain the rules of a game.

C.The reason for using real photographs in the game.
D.The way of making the photographs more appealing.
(3)What can we learn about Unseen Empire from the last two paragraphs?

A.It is well received and highly profitable.

Years ago,not long after graduating from school and starting my career in Denver,I set off on an exciting solo trip to reunite with an old friend. As I packed my car, little did I know that this adventure would unveil the remarkable bonds that can form between strangers, all sparked by the simple exchange of "thank you."
My journey commenced with a thrilling flight to Albuquerque,a vibrant city in New Mexico. My ultimate destination was Oklahoma City, where I looked forward to visiting a dear friend. The trip was relatively smooth, treating me to beautiful sights along the way. While waiting in line to pay for gas,I struck up a friendly chat with an older couple who were also refueling their vehicle.
Continuing my journey with joy in my heart, dark, ominous smoke suddenly billowed from my car's rear.Panic gripped me as I hastily pulled over to the side of the road, unsure of our next steps. In an incredible twist of fate, the same friendly couple from the gas station pulled up behind my car. With warm smiles and open hearts, they generously offered to drive me to my friend's place in Oklahoma City.During the ride,we engaged in lively conversations, sharing stories and laughter as the miles passed by.Upon reaching our destination, the husband even handed me his business card as a gesture of goodwill and kindness.
Appreciative of their unwavering help,I later expressed my gratitude through a heartfelt thank-you note.In response, they sent me a cherished Christmas gift along with a touching note as well.As the years passed, life threw another curveball my way.On a fateful day,I drove to a nearby town for an important meeting.
Unfortunately,in my haste,I accidentally left my car's lights on all day long.As dusk approached,I returned to my car, only to find that the battery had completely died.Thankfully,I noticed the Friendly Ford dealership conveniently located next door.Filled with hope,I entered the showroom, where I encountered two helpful salesmen.
