  • 8.Each time Chinese New Year is approaching, preparations are underway around the world. Here are some Chinatowns for those outside of China wishing to mark the day.
       London
Although it may not be as large or as long-built as others, having only become a center for the Chinese community during the 1950s,London's Chinatown is perfectly formed little firework that knows how to see in the year with a bang.Decorated with red lanterns, previous years have seen shows with acrobatics (雜技),martial art (武術(shù)),dance and opera nearby.
       San Francisco
San Francisco's Chinatown is perhaps the most famous in the United States. The city was the main entry-point for Chinese who had crossed the Pacific to the USA during the early 19th century.Between the Grant Avenue and the Stockton Street, this historic area is a local treasure, attracting more visitors per year than the Golden Gate Bridge.
       Bangkok
With an about 100-year-old history, the Thai capital's Chinatown contains complex streets offering all kinds of tasty treats, clothes, toys and antiques.Sunday market days are such a good time to get the full atmosphere of the neighborhood. The area is also known for its gold dealers, whose shops line the road.
       Mauritius
Found in Port Louis, this Mauritian Chinatown shows the island nation's rich multicultural diversity.Established in the early years of the 20th century by settlers from China, its tiny shops and restaurants serve locals and visitors.During the Chinese Spring Festival, the most exciting sight is the Dragon Dances on Rue Royale when Chinese musicians and dancers perform the traditional lion dances through the streets.

  • 9.When we were growing up,my mom focused most of her energy on the organization like the church, the school or the community.I remember her comment whenever I complained about the volunteer activities. "It's for the church. " Or "It's for the school. " So my brother ran the sound equipment for the school's annual Christmas play,my dad made bean soup for the church's summer festival, and I spent days reorganizing the elementary school library at the end of each school year. How could anyone dare to refuse? Each demand was accompanied by that unspoken question, "If you don't do it,who will?"
For my mother, volunteering was like breathing or cleaning out the closets each spring. If it needed to be done and you were able to do it,you did it.
Now as an adult and mother of three children,I have raised my hand at more meeting than I care to count. As a Girl Scout leader,I spent my Thursday evening with sixteen energetic Brownies.I baked dozens of cookies to raise money for the school gardening club.If I didn't do it,who would?
That little question has also encouraged me to take action in other aspects of my life when I would have preferred to just stay in bed.If I don't cut fat,add calcium (鈣),and exercise, who will?If I don't turn off TV programs that are inappropriate for my children, who will?
Sometimes what comes with that question seems overwhelming (壓倒性的).How easy it would be to turn the responsibility of life over to those we all love to reply on: "them".Let "them" worry about endangered whales.Let "them" pick up roadside garbage.Let "them" serve on the school board. But that isn't what my mother taught me.If I can do it,I believe I should do it.
       After all,if I don't,who will?

A.The author's father had the biggest power in the family.
B.The author's mother cared more about others than her own family.
C.The author's mother influenced her family greatly in volunteering.
D.The author's family always happily did volunteering.
(2)What does the author's mother think of volunteering?

    A.It is a big challenge.
    B.It is a natural thing.
C.It is a sign of ability.
D.It takes up too much time.
(3)For the author, what does "If you don't do it,who will?" refer to?

A.A way to improve her life.
    B.A good personal habit.
    C.A good family tradition.
    D.A kind of responsibility.
(4)What would be the best title for the text?

  • 10.Drama in education has been an effective teaching and learning tool from ancient Greek times to the present day. "Tell me and I will forget," the Confucian(儒家的)proverb goes, "Show me and I will remember.Involve me and I will understand."
At primary level, drama is a good way of learning feelings, knowledge and ideas, and in examining relationships, which will help students understand the world.
The primary teacher should try to improve the child's ability of make-believe (a state of pretending that something is real) and use it into other areas of knowledge. So creating drama is a more important performance, exploring life through the creation of fiction rather than developing a piece of work for performance. The results include the development of social, personal and drama skills. The way in which the child acquires knowledge through drama is as important as the knowledge itself.
Dympna Byrne,a primary teacher, uses drama in every subject she teaches." A lot of the focus in primary education is to encourage children to be active in their own learning, and drama is a brilliant tool for that," she says.Byrne says the benefits of drama as a teaching tool can be easily found in subjects such as English (It helps with writing.) or history (It can bring old things to life.),but it is the way in which this type of learning emerges(呈現(xiàn))that is the most important. She says, "Through competitions and performances,we can make students interested in drama outside the classroom, because what really excites students about drama is that it is fun."

(1)By using the Confucian proverb, the writer wants to show drama is
    .
    A.a(chǎn)ncient
    B.different
    C.useful
    D.modern
(2)What benefits will drama bring to the students?

A.It will bring more feelings to all the students.
B.It will help the students have many more ideas.
C.It will give the students many kinds of feelings.
D.It will show the students what the world is like.
(3)What does the underlined word "it" in the third paragraph refer to?

A.The teacher who works in a school.
    B.The child's ability of make-believe.
    C.The knowledge in different areas.
D.A piece of work for performance.
(4)According to Byrne, what is the most important in learning?

    A.How students learn knowledge.
    B.What knowledge students should learn.
C.Which subject can help students with their writing.
D.When students should study old things.

  • 11.Anyone who has studied biology, watched a nature documentary(紀(jì)錄片),or,for that matter, simply enjoyed time in the outdoors, has likely been amazed by the variety of plant and animal life on our planet.
Till now, about 1.5 million species have been formally described in the scientific literature, and most of them are insects.Proportionally, bacteria(細(xì)菌)make up less than 1% of all described species.
Scientists generally agree that many more species exist than are formally described, but they disagree about how many there really are. Some studies have estimated 2 million or fewer while others suggest as many as 12 million.
In a new paper published in The Quarterly Review of Biology, researchers from the University of Arizona have estimated that there are roughly 2 billion living species on Earth,a thousand times more than the current number of described species.
In coming up with their estimate, the researchers took advantage of the fact that many estimates now agree on the projected number of insect species, around 6.8 million. They incorporated new estimates of species boundaries revealed(揭示) by DNA sequences, which suggest there might be six times as many insect species, increasing the total to 40 million for insect species alone.
They then reviewed all groups of organisms(微生物) associated with insects as parasites(寄生蟲).They found that each insect species most likely hosts a unique species of mite (螨蟲),a roundworm,a one-celled microsporidian, and a one-celled organism called apicomplexan. Most importantly, the researchers estimated that each insect species is likely to host at least 10 bacterial species found nowhere else.Based on these estimates, they conclude that there should be around 2 billion species on Earth.

(1)How many bacterial species are formally described in the scientific literature?

    A.Less than 15 thousand.
    B.Less than 0.15 million.
    C.About 1.5 million.
    D.About 1.5 billion.
(2)Which of the following do scientists generally agree on?

A.There are more bacteria than insects.
B.There are about 2 billion living species on Earth.
C.There are about 1.5 million insect species on Earth.
D.There are many more species included in the scientific literature.
(3)What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?

    A.The conclusion of the research.
    B.The opinion of most scientists.
C.The estimated number of insect species.
D.The efforts made by the researchers.
(4)What is the most important basis for the researchers to draw their conclusion?

    A.New findings about DNA sequences.
B.The discovery of new insect species.
C.The agreed-on information about living species.
D.New-found bacterial species living on insects.
