       New York Academy of Medicine

       The Center for Fiction
The Center for Fiction recently opened a new location in Downtown Brooklyn that brings the old-world charm of literature together. While members are required to take advantage of its upstairs library and they can get discounts on reading groups, the public is free to check out the ground floor where a part of its library sits as well as its bookstore. It's a beautifully quiet space for literature lovers to sit and read.

  • 2.When people ask me how I started writing,I find myself describing an urgent need that I felt to work with language.Having said that,I did not know for a long time what I was looking for.It was not until I followed this feeling to its source that I discovered I had a passion for writing. With some encouragement from my colleagues,I had one of my poems published. This bit of success, however, was the point where my problem began.
Back in 1978,I had to travel between three different campuses in the morning, teaching freshman composition.Afternoons I spent taking my daughter to her ballet and horse-riding lessons.I composed my lectures on the way,and that was all the thinking time I had. When I returned home, there was not enough of me left for writing after a full working day.
As a way out, decided to get up two hours before my usual time.My alarm was set for 5:00 A.M.The first day I shut it off because I had placed it within arm's reach. The second day I set two clocks, one on my night table, and one out in the hallway.I had to jump out of bed and run to silence it before my family was awoken. This was when my morning writing began.
Since that first morning in 1978,I have been following the habit to this day,not making or accepting many excuses for not writing.I wrote my poems in this manner for nearly ten years before my first book was published. When I decided to write a novel,I divided my two hours:the first for poetry, the second for fiction.Well or badly,I wrote at least two pages a day. This is how my novel,The Line of the Sun,was finished. If I had waited to have the time,I would still be waiting to write my novel.
What I got out of getting up in the dark to work is the feeling that I am in control. For many people, the initial sense of urgency to create easily dies away because it requires making the tough decision:taking the time to create, stealing it from yourself if it's the only way.

  • 3.It is universally acknowledged that renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydropower are all much better for the climate than fossil fuels. It is true for wind and solar. However, the picture for hydropower is more complicated than we think.
A new study by the Environmental Defense Fund analyzed the climate impacts of 1,500 hydropower facilities across the globe. That accounts for about half of hydropower generation worldwide. The researchers looked at whether the facilities behave as a greenhouse gas sink or as a source. To figure this out, they looked into all the different components that help determine a hydropower facility's greenhouse gas emissions (排放).
"There are so many contributors to greenhouse gas emissions from hydropower — but essentially, the majority of greenhouse gas emissions arise from the reservoir (水庫) itself,as vegetation and soils are submerged underwater in the dam that is used for the hydropower generation." said lissa Ocko,a senior climate scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund and co-author of the study. As the submerged vegetation breaks down,it releases greenhouse gases such as CO2.
"The larger the surface area of the reservoir, the more greenhouse gases are going to be given out from that reservoir. Also, the temperature plays a role as well how warm the reservoir is will affect how much greenhouse gases are produced and given out from the reservoir." added Ocko.
Through their analysis,Ocko and her co-author Steven Hamburg, also with the Environmental Defense Fund, discovered that the climate impacts of hydropower cover a complete range. The good news is that some facilities perform just as well as wind and solar. But shockingly, more than 100 facilities are actually worse for the climate than fossil fuels. The study is in the journal Environmental Science and Technology.
This finding doesn't mean we should forget about hydropower. "But we just need to be careful to make sure that we have climate benefits. There are a lot of situations where hydropower can be equal to wind and jye.ailar.So it really depends on the specific facility." said Ocko.

(1)How do scientists prove hydropower facilities' effect on the climate?

    A.By making comparisons.
    B.By conducting experiments.
    C.By referring to previous studies.
    D.By analyzing causes and effects.
(2)What are the main sources of greenhouse gases from hydropower?

    A.Vegetation and soils.
    B.Heat and sunlight.
    C.Pollutants in the reservoir.
    D.Components of the generators.
(3)What have Ocko and her co-author Steven Hamburg found?

A.The surface area of a reservoir decides the climate.
B.Hydropower often influences the climate in all aspects.
C.Some facilities perform much better than wind and solar.
D.Fossil fuels are worse for the climate than over 100 facilities.
(4)What is the text mainly about?

A.Scientists urge an end to hydropower.
    B.Hydropower is not necessarily green.
C.Hydropower is worse than fossil fuels.
D.Renewable energy is a complicated issue.

Everything about moving day was a puzzle.I didn't know anything about our new building on a new street. Our old life was broken into pieces and packed up in piled boxes.I wondered if it would ever fit back together again.
Mom introduced me to our new neighbours, the Chens.Mrs Chen worked with Mom at the job she'd just started.Mr Chen was a famous craftsman(匠人)from China.
Mom said it was a fresh start, but it felt broken to me.I just wanted things to go back to how they had been before.
After the first day at my new school,I walked home alone.Mom had told me she had to work.I was still hoping she'd meet me after the bell.I had to open the door myself with the new key.I felt a bit hungry and went straight into the kitchen, ripping tape from the packed boxes while I searched for a clean plate. My fingers slipped, and something went crashing to the ground.
"Benjamin!" cried Mom from the doorway.I didn't hear her come in. "What just broke?" she asked, kneeling to pick up the pieces. In her hands,I recognized the shattered pieces. It was Grandma's bowl. "I can't believe you broke this," she said.
"Well,I can't believe we have to live here now!I can't believe I have to switch schools, and I can't believe you didn't even meet me after my first day!" I ran into my room, slamming the door behind me.
The broom swept across the kitchen floor. Then the click of Mom's bedroom door closed behind her.I sneaked out into the kitchen and found the fragments in the dustbin. There were so many pieces in here, but maybe I could put them back together.Turning the pieces,I tried to match them, but this bowl would never look the same again.
"I'm sorry I yelled," said Mom,as she opened her door. "Please just throw out the pieces. We can't make a fresh start with broken things."
As I wandered down the hall,Mr Chen was emptying his garbage.
