  • 2.While driving home after work,Jane Hodgson noticed a car pulled over at the side of the road and a crowd beginning to gather around someone who was lying on the ground.
Jane, who had completed a first aid at work course, pulled over to see if she could offer any help - and it turned out to be lucky for the young injured girl that she did.
Describing the scene she came across,Jane says: "The onlookers were ashen-faced and looking lost. They were so shocked that they hadn't even thought to call for an ambulance yet."
After speaking to the emergency services,Jane started finding out what had happened and what injuries the young girl called Jenny had.The girl had been hit by a car and gone over the handlebars of her bike, landing on her head and shoulder. Her shoulder and arm were twisted (扭曲) underneath her.
"She hadn't been wearing a helmet (頭盔) when she got knocked down, and I thought that she should not be moved as I couldn't be sure about a spinal injury (脊椎損傷),but after looking her over and checking the circulation in her injured arm I did feel fairly confident that she had escaped relatively unhurt.
"As we were waiting for an ambulance, the amount of pain the girl was in was increasing. To distract (分散注意力) her and minimize the risk of her going into shock I kept her talking. She held my hand tightly when the pain got too much and this helped.I told her I could handle it - we laughed about that," describes Jane.
Later,a doctor from the local hospital's ICU stopped at the scene too.The ICU doctor decided that Jenny should lie on her back, making her much more comfortable until the emergency services arrived.
Thinking back,Jane says: "For me,knowing that in a small way I helped that girl through what was a frightening experience is all the reward I need.I felt great to know I'd made a difference and I'd do it again."

  • 3.    The Roman Colosseum was built almost two thousand years ago.Despite its age and a 14th century earthquake that knocked down the south side, most of the 150-some foot building is still standing.Scientists and engineers have long suspected a key to the building's durability (使用年限) is the use of a specific Roman concrete. But exactly how this solid concrete has contributed to the architecture's strength has been a mystery to researchers across the globe.
A team of researchers recently discovered a potential answer to why these ancient Roman buildings have been able to weather the test of time while many modern concrete structures seem to fall apart after a few decades. The answer is self-healing concrete.
The material has three components:limestone (石灰石),volcanic material and water. What the researchers found was that the self-healing feature might be simply caused by chemistry accidentally. The limestone in the concrete is likely the secret.
When the ancient Romans made mortar (灰漿),they heated up the lime to turn it into a substance called "quicklime".And,because they introduced water to the quicklime during mixing, the heat it produced set up a chemical foundation that could strengthen the concrete later.
When tiny cracks start to form later, the quicklime stops them from becoming bigger. When it rains, the lime reacts with the water to recombine as various forms of calcium carbonate (碳酸鈣),quickly filling the crack or reacting with the volcanic ash to "heal" the material.
For materials scientist Ainissa Ramirez, this new understanding of ancient Roman concrete is a welcome discovery. "This is one way that the material can be more environmentally friendly," says Ramirez. "It's sort of like a message in a bottle. The Romans made the material. We had to kind of figure out how they did it so that we can make better materials — and then, you know,in turn,be better protectors of our environment."

(1)What can we learn from paragraph 1?

A.The secret of Roman concrete has been revealed.
B.The Roman Colosseum was built in the 14th century.
C.The whole Roman Colosseum survived the earthquake.
D.Roman concrete is essential to the architecture's strength.
(2)What does the underlined word "weather" in paragraph 2 mean?

    A.Take.
    B.Stand.
    C.Avoid.
    D.Fail.
(3)What do we know about the self-healing process?

A.The lime itself could fill the crack later.
B.The quicklime should be made on rainy days.
C.The chemical foundation could weaken the concrete.
D.Combining water and quicklime would produce heat.
(4)What can be inferred from Ramirez's words?

A.People can be inspired to make greener materials.
B.The secret of Roman concrete is hidden in a bottle.
C.Roman concrete has greatly improved the environment.
D.Roman concrete is popular in making modern architecture.

Tom was working in a big company. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home.He couldn't wait to get back to see his wife and children. It was coming up on Mother's Day,and he usually tried to make it "back home",but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town,he saw a flower shop.He said to himself, "I know what I will do.I'll send my mother some roses."
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a boy talking to the girl in it. "How many roses can I get for five dollars?" the boy asked. The girl was trying to explain that roses were expensive.Maybe the boy would be happy with something else.
"No.I have to buy roses," he said. "My mom was badly sick last year and I didn't get to spend much time with her.I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because those are her favorite." He was stubborn.
The girl in the shop looked up at Tom and was just shaking her head.Something inside of Tom was touched by the boy's voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly.Tom had been blessed(幸運(yùn)的) in his business, and he looked at the girl and silently said that he would pay for the boy's roses.
The girl looked at the boy and said, "OK,I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars." The young man almost jumped into the air.He took the flowers and ran out of the store. It was worth more than fifty dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Tom ordered his own flowers and asked the girl to have them delivered (遞送) to his mother. After that, with relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving,he saw the boy walking to a graveyard (墓地).
