3.We've heard many stories of people across the world who have lived a zero-waste lifestyle, but it's hard to see that a whole village is trying to become waste-fee.The people of Kamikatsu, take recycling so seriously that they really hope to become the nation's first zero-waste village by 2022.
Karmikatsu has no rubbish trucks- -so people need to compost their kitchen rubbish at home for gardening. They have to wash and divide the rest of their rubbish into 34 different groups. And they also have to take it to the recycling center themselves where workers make sure that the waste goes into the correct boxes. It took some time for people to get used to this rule, but they are now seeing the rule as normal.
There are different boxes for different types of paper products- newspapers, magazines and cartons(紙箱).Even plastic bottles go into different boxes. Many of these things are reused to make clothing, toys, and other things. The labels (標(biāo)簽)on each box show the recycling process for that kind of rubbish,so the villagers know exactly what happens to their rubbish.
In Kamikatsu, there is a local shop where villagers can exchange used things with new things without paying money. And in a factory, women are working to make bags, clothes and dolls with rubbish. The buildings of the factory are made from reused materials.
With a population of just over 2,000,Kamikatsu reuses about 90 percent of its rubbish,so you could say that the village is very close to achieving its purpose.Villagers have been practicing waste management for the past 19 years after making their zero-waste plan in 2003.They have given up their old practice of throwing rubbish into open fires.
