  • 1.Great inventors like Thomas Edison have impacted people's lives with their inventions. While their contributions are certainly valuable, other amazing inventions were actually created by children!
       The trampoline
Trampolines are great for both fun and exercise, but they are a fairly recent jye.aivention.In the 1930s,George Nissen was inspired to make a bouncy "net" after seeing a circus performance. He thought it more entertaining for performers to continue bouncing instead of landing in a net. So,at the age of 16,he made it by stretching thick cloth in a metal frame.
       The Popsicle
Cold weather led to the creation of a delicious invention- the Popsicle.Frank Epperson was just 11 years old when he accidentally created his first Popsicle. He was making himself a soda drink and left his glass outside overnight. When he found it in the morning,it had frozen solid with the stir (攪拌)stick still in the glass. And the first Popsicle was born.
       Braille
Three-year-old Louis Braille experienced a serious eye injury that blinded him in both eyes.He struggled to read by moving his fingers across raised letters, but that proved very difficult. At the age of twelve,Louis learned about a communication system where messages could be read silently with fingertips. He changed it and created Braille. It' s now used around the world!
       BEACON
When Hannah Herbst was just 14 years old,she was named America's Top Young Scientist for inventing a device called BEACON.After receiving a letter from her Ethiopian pen pal,Hannah was inspired to create a device that could convert the energy from ocean waves into electricity which she hopes will help people without easy access to electricity.

  • 2.When I was five years old,I played the role of the turtle in a play organized by my older sister.I had one line at the end, when I beat the sleeping rabbit to the finish line:slow and steady wins the race.
I've always felt that those words guided my life.I was never the fastest;I was rarely an A student. But as the careers of others paused,I kept going. My goal was always the same:to learn more this year than I had last year.
When I see slow students, that's what I think of.Are those the students who will keep learning over their entire lifetime, and leave the "quick" students far behind? The goal of education is not to gain as much knowledge as quickly as possible, but to gain useful knowledge and keep it.As such,I would prefer a slow, thoughtful student to a fast, superficial one.As a teacher,I don't care how "fast" someone learns something. We process information differently. To use myself as an example,I tended to be comparatively slow in my advanced undergraduate mathematics classes. In retrospect,I've come to realize that one of the ways I learn is "error-based." That is,I effectively learn by making mistakes.
I seldom worried about "slow learners" when teaching medical students.I knew these young men and women could learn.Like in so many other professions, knowledge is only a part of being a doctor.I spent decades learning enough to be a doctor and decades more keeping up and improving. It never stops, and never should.

(1)For what purpose did the author write the first paragraph?

A.To share with readers one of his unforgettable childhood experiences.
B.To prove that slow learners tend to have a better long-term memory.
C.To introduce the topic that continuous efforts are the final marker of success.
D.To show the author's preference for the role of turtle.
(2)Which of the following statements is true according to the author's opinion?

    A.Learning,like a career,or like life,is a marathon,not a sprint.
B.Being too slow means you miss out in today's competitive world.
C.The more knowledge a student can learn as quickly as possible, the better the teaching is.
D.Slow learners actually learn better when it comes to medical research.
(3)Which quality in a student is most appreciated by the author ?

A.The ability to pick up a particular subject or topic more quickly.
B.The determination to carry on a lifelong learning.
C.The natural flexibility at solving problems.
D.The willingness to try different new things.
(4)Which of the following best describes the author's belief?

A.Constant dripping wears away a stone.
    B.Content is better than riches.
    C.More haste,less speed.
D.Learning makes a good man better and an evil man worse.

  • 3.During a decline in tourism, one national park in Thailand has seen a dramatic rise in "visitors" recently. So many are the hermit crabs(寄居蟹)flooding into the otherwise empty beaches of Koh Lanta that shells (貝殼)for them to live in have become in short supply.
The Thai government moved quickly to ease the housing shortage, launching a public appeal for empty shells that netted over 200 kg.On December 5 these were distributed around the park in a ceremony.
Hermit crabs rely on shells to protect their soft bodies, moving to larger shells as they grow.On Koh Lanta and the surrounding smaller islands, their rapid increase seems to be a natural phenomenon, rather than directly related to the absence of tourists. But the shortage of shells may be man-made:pretty ones have long been gathered to be sold as goods.Crabs had begun to make do with potential death-traps such as plastic caps and bottles.
The shell drive was part of a government initiative to "regain the balance of nature". "I have instructed all national parks to do whatever it takes," says Varawut Silpa-archa,the minister for natural resources. His inspiration comes from the pause in tourism brought on by COVID-19.A ban on international visitors and the closure of national parks have helped nature recover, bringing endangered leatherback turtles back onto Thai beaches. In the coastal provinces of Phang Nga and Phuket, turtles have laid the largest number of eggs for 20 years.
The government has decided to try to copy the short break forced on it by COVID-19 in future. From now on,all national parks will be required to close for a short period during the off-season and to limit the number of tourists through a reservation system when they are open.Although such restrictions mean reduced earnings from tourism in the short term,in the longer run more parks may help to keep the tourists coming.

(1)What happened to the beaches of Koh Lanta recently?

    A.They got flooded by seawater.
    B.They became completely empty.
C.They were packed with hermit crabs.
D.They saw a constant stream of tourists.
(2)What contributed to the housing shortage for hermit crabs?

    A.Natural disasters.
    B.Human activities.
    C.Their preference for bottles.
    D.The government's involvement.
(3)Why are turtles mentioned in paragraph 4?

A.To warn turtles are dying out.
B.To prove beaches are their ideal habitats.
C.To stress ecological diversity of Thailand.
D.To illustrate the birth of Varawut's inspiration.
(4)Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Developing Economy or Protecting Animals?
B.Closing National Parks or Drawing More Visitors?
C.Governments are Responsible for the Balance of Nature
D.Authorities Help to Find Shelters for Homeless Hermit Crabs

  • 9.I worked in the local pet registration office in our neighborhood. It had been a few months since our beloved Bama had passed away. He'd lived a good, long life.My husband,Alan, and I didn't have children. Our boxer (拳獅犬)was our baby. After Bama's death,we couldn't bring ourselves to go through his toys to decide what to keep,so we put them all in our closet.I told myself I'd do it when I was ready.Apparently,I still wasn't.
Now I sat on my front porch and sobbed.Friends and family had suggested we get another dog,but Alan and I dismissed the idea.We couldn't go through that kind of heartbreak again.Besides,I didn't want just any dog.I wanted Bama.
I gazed out over the yard.Across the street was a dog.A boxer.I wiped the tears from my eyes. Was he real or just a myth of my wishful imagination?I blinked. The boxer was still there. We locked eyes.He ran at a moderately swift pace across the street, straight toward me.Tentatively,I offered my hand.He licked me.I let out a surprised laugh.
This dog was younger than Bama, smaller.Bama had been white, but this dog's fur got stripes. He wore a collar but had no ID.I knew he must belong to someone in the neighborhood, but I'd never seen another boxer around.I would have remembered if I had.
"Where did you come from?" I asked the dog, scratching him behind the ears.He didn't seem lost.Just as if he were dropping by for a visit. "Alan!" I called. "You have to come see this!"
Alan joined me,and we sat together in wonder for a moment. Then the boxer got up and ran off.In the following days,he'd sometimes appear in the backyard when Alan and I were outside.Other times,he'd wait for us on the front porch. "I wish he would announce himself, " Alan joked. "Knock on the door or something." The next day, there was a strange scratching at the door.I opened it and saw the mystery boxer, doggie smile wide.
The dog seemed to know exactly what my husband and I needed._________
Recovering from pain of the great loss,I wanted to know who his owner was._________
