43．Many animals move from one place to another at certain times of the year.This yearly movement is called migration.One of the most wonderful migrations is that of the North American monarch butterfly.It migrates to find food，get a partner，or in search of warmer weather.
Every autumn，millions of these beautiful insects begin a long and difficult journey.They travel around 4，000 kilometers south and find their way to California or Mexico.However，until recently no one knew how they did this.
A team of scientists at the University of Washington has now found the answer.They have found out that the monarch is able to tell the time of day.Also，it uses its eyes to measure（測(cè)量） where the sun is in the sky.These two pieces of information allow the butterfly to decide where to go.Finally，it reaches the places successfully and it will spend the winter there.
The solution to the mystery of the monarch's amazing ability comes finally while it is in serious trouble now.Its population has fallen down by as much as 90 percent.In recent years，unusually cold temperatures and rain have caused monarchs to die in large numbers.What's worse，in many of the places where the butterfly can be found，people are doing harm to the natural environment.They cut down trees and use chemicals to kill the plants，which the monarch mainly eats.
