Children offered Covid vaccine (疫苗) The Government has decided that all UK children aged from 5 to 11 years old should be offered a Covid vaccination. Some children in this age group with medical conditions have already had the vaccine.A vaccine is a type of medicine that trains the body to fight a disease using its own defences (防御) .
What does the vaccination (接種疫苗) do?
A vaccination reduces the chances of catching Covid-19.Two doses (計量) should give long-lasting protection (防護) against getting really ill.It should also help to protect against other symptoms (癥狀) ,such as losing your sense of smell or having a high temperature. As with all medicines,no vaccine offers full protection. Some people may still get Covid-19 after being vaccinated but their symptoms should be less severe (嚴重的) .
Why is it being offered to younger children now?
Children are less likely than older people to get really ill from Covid-19,so the benefits of vaccinating them are smaller. The decision to offer vaccines to all children follows advice from the Joint Committee for Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) ,a group of scientists who advise the Government.Professor Wei Shen Lim from the JCVI said,"The main purpose of offering vaccinations to 5 to 11 -year-olds is to increase their protection against severe illness."The Government says giving Covid vaccines to younger children is"non-urgent"(非緊急的) and it's up to parents or carers to decide if it's right for their child. The vaccine will be given as two small doses 12 weeks apart.
How will it help?
Wales was the first UK country to offer vaccines to children. The Welsh Health Minister,Eluned Morgan, said the JCVI's decision will help stop children having to miss school. In Scotland,a record number of young people missed school because of Covid in January.Children in Northern Ireland are also being offered the vaccinations.England's Health Secretary,Sajid Javid, said the injections (注射) will" increase protection against potential(可能的) future waves of Covid-19".

Virtual reality recreates a Roman's eye view In AD 79,the ancient Roman city of Pompeii,in southern Italy, was destroyed by a volcanic eruption (火山爆發(fā)) that buried many of its buildings.Archaeologists (experts who study man-made objects to understand history)have been observing it for almost 300 years but now they have a new tool for understanding how Pompeii might once have looked-virtual reality (VR) .
Researchers Danilo Campanaro and Giacomo Landeschi, from Lund University in Sweden, used data collected by drones (無人飛機) flying over the ruined Roman city to create a 3 D computer reconstruction (重建) of one of its most impressive buildings. They then fed the reconstruction into a video game system called Unity (which is used by the smartphone game Pokemon Go) to make a VR model. The idea is not just to recreate the buildings but also to understand a bit more about how Roman people might have experienced them.
Campanaro and Landeschi asked volunteers to take a virtual tour of the house in both summer and winter light. The researchers used special eye-tracking technology to record exactly which areas people looked at and for how long. From this, the team concluded that the building used clever design to draw attention to objects that showed off the wealth and status(地位) of its owner-perhaps a man called Lucius Valerius Flaccus, whose ring was found in the ruins.
(1)What was the name of the ancient Roman city destroyed by a volcanic eruption?
A.Rome
B.Pompeii
C.Florence
D.Italy
(2)What was the purpose of using virtual reality to create a model of the ancient Roman city?
A.To better understand how the buildings were constructed.
B.To experience what it might have been like to live in the city.
C.To find artifacts (古器物) buried beneath the ruins.
D.To play the game and make more people enjoy this game.
(3)How did the researchers use eye-tracking technology in their study?
A.To record which area of the building people looked at and for how long.
B.To monitor the health of the volunteers taking the virtual tour.
C.To create a 3 D model of the building using data collected from drones.
D.None of the above.
(4)What did the researchers conclude about the building they studied?
A.The building was owned by a wealthy man named Lucius Valerius Flaccus.
B.The building was used as a marketplace by the ancient Romans.
C.The building was constructed using unusual materials.
D.It is built for storing a man's gold ring.組卷:1引用:1難度:0.9
