2.Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling.Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need.
We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place. The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005.It now makes up a third of a typical household's waste in the UK.In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK,for example,is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt,it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect.Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place.
Food waste is a serious problem,jye.ai.Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However,a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example. But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us.
We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But is also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.
There are signs of hope.As more of us recycle,we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.
(1)The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show
A.the tendency of cutting household waste
B.the increase of packaging recycling
C.the rapid growth of super markets
D.the fact of packaging overuse
(2)According to the text,recycling
A.helps control the greenhouse effect
B.means burning packaging for energy
C.is the solution to gas shortage
D.leads to a waste of land
(3)What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A.Unpackaged products are of bad quality.
B.Supermarkets care more about packaging.
C.It is improper to judge quality by packaging.
D.Other products are better packaged than food.
(4)What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Fighting wastefulness is difficult.
B.Needless material is mostly recycled.
C.People like collecting recyclable waste.
D.The author is proud of their consumer culture.組卷:0引用:1難度:0.7 -
3.Do you feel lonely? If you do,you are not alone. It's more than a personal mental health issue.
Loneliness is a global issue.Half-a-million Japanese are suffering from social isolation. The UK recently appointed a minister for loneliness, the first in the world. In Australia,Victorian state MP Fiona Patten is calling for the same.
What do cities have to do with loneliness?Think of the awkward silence in a lift full of passengers who never communicate. Now think of a playground where parents often begin chatting. It's not that the built environment "causes" interaction, but it can certainly either enable or limit potential interaction.
Can we think of different ways to be in the city to "cure" loneliness?I recently conducted a graduate design studio at the Melbourne School of Design. The students, using design as a research methodology (方法),came up with potential architectural and urban responses to loneliness.
Fanhui Ding came up with a student---run restaurant for the University of Melbourne.Students get credit working on the farms that supply the restaurant, which can be used to pay for a meal.People also get discounts for dining at the same table, encouraging students to interact over food.Given the many international students who suffer from loneliness, her concept used cooking, food and farming to cure loneliness.
Some students deal with familiar cases, such as building "Puppy Society",an app that connects a pet with multiple owners, designing more social interaction spaces in high-rise apartment buildings and redesigning supermarkets to make them places for people to visit on a Sunday morning.
Beverley Wang looked at loneliness in the ageing population. She came up with a project called "Nurture",for which she designed a kindergarten co-housed with a nursing home.Designing spaces for storytelling, she brought the elderly into the kindergarten as informal teaching assistants, giving them a sense of purpose.
Moving beyond merely analyzing the problems, the research output shows that an alternative, less lonely future is indeed possible.Without claiming to solve loneliness, design can be an important tool in response to it.
(1)What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A.Half of the Japanese are living with loneliness.
B.The UK attaches little importance to loneliness issues.
C.Australia is likely to follow the UK's example.
D.Loneliness has been a primary concern globally.
(2)What can students do in Fanhui Ding's design?
A.Work in the restaurant to pay for meals.
B.Pay less if they share tables with others.
C.Gather credits for their college graduation.
D.Establish international culture communication.
(3)How does the project "Nurture" benefit elder people?
A.By providing them working opportunities.
B.By employing them as the formal staff.
C.By asking children to tell them stories.
D.By lifting their awareness of self-value.
(4)What could be the best title for the passage?
A.Key principles of designing city buildings.

4.When you really love a book,or have just scored a new one that you're dying to read,it can be exciting to pick up a smooth, shiny hardcover copy that creaks a little bit when you open it.But those hardcover books can be heavy, and new ones aren't cheap, either.Sometimes, you'd just rather have a portable paperback—but if it's a new book you're after, you might have to wait a full year or so to get it in paperback form. Why are books released as hardcovers first?
Not so long ago, hardcover books were the only type of books. Before the appearance of mass production, print runs were limited, and books were hard-bound and expensive.Around the 1930s,that changed with the production of mass-produced paperback books, which consisted with a huge surge in reading as a leisure activity around World War II.Paperback books were more affordable and cheaper to produce, which still holds true today.
Despite the seeming advantages of paperbacks, there are several reasons why the hardcover has persisted.Because of its history,it conveys a bit more legitimacy (正統(tǒng)性) in the book world than the paperback does." The hardback is a mark of quality…it shows booksellers and reviewers that this is a book worth paying attention to," Philip Jones, editor at the Bookseller, explains to The Guardian.
But the major reason why books come out as hardeovers is that people buy them, despite their higher cost. The Economist compares it to movies being released in theaters several months before they arrive on DVD. "Just as film fans like to see films on the big screen, collectors enjoy the hardback's superior quality," according to The Economist. And because they're profitable, publishers can gain more from hardcovers, which "will often sell at twice the price of their paperback equivalent but do not cost twice as much to produce," Jones explains.
(1)What can we learn about hardcover books from paragraph 1?
A.They appeal to real book-lovers.
B.They are heavy but not expensive.
C.They take a long time to come out.
D.They are not preferred by book-lovers.
(2)What does the underlined word "surge" in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Drop.
B.Success.
C.Blow.
D.Increase.
(3)Why are hardback books still printed today?
A.They are brilliantly edited.
B.They are worth collecting.
C.They convey correct information.
D.They sell better than paperbacks.
(4)What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To introduce hardcover books.
B.To present a new social finding.
C.To explain a confusing problem.
D.To encourage people to read books.組卷:1引用:1難度:0.5

16.We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.
Growing up,I wanted to be just like my mom.Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community.I loved going to the local nursing home to help with her until I hit my preteen years.Suddenly,I was too caught up in my adolescent world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was twelve,Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car.I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything?Eventually,I made my way outside.I imagined the lake water cooling my skin.Annoyed,I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut.I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation.
"Tasha, would you like to know where we are going?" Mom asked calmly.
"I guess…," I murmured under my breath.
"Sweetheart,we are going to a children's shelter,I have been there before and I think it would benefit you," she explained.
I felt a knot slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there?
When we reached the shelter,I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victorian home.As we approached the large front porch, wind bells played a calming tune while trees and blossoms welcomed us.Maybe this wasn't going to be so bad.
Mom rang the doorbell. The door flew open and we were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing.Toys were spread out across the floor.I noticed a baby whose body was scarred with wounds. The majority of the children had noticeable physical scars(傷疤) such as cuts, scratches and burns. What a terrible life they had before they moved here!My heart sank.
As I was looking around,I felt a gentle pull on my shirt.
____________
I returned to the shelter with Mom several times.
