1.After Impressionism:Inventing Modern Art
25 March — 13 August 2023 Rooms 1 to 8
Explore a period of great change when artists broke with established tradition and laid the foundations for the art of the 20th and the 21st centuries.
The decades between 1880 and the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 were a complex, energetic period of artistic questioning,searching,risk-taking and innovation.
The exhibition celebrates the achievements of three giants of the period:Paul Cezanne,Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin and follows the influences they had on younger generations of French artists and on wider circles of artists across Europe.
With over a hundred works by artists ranging from Picasso to Mondrian and a selection of sculptures by artists including Rodin and Camille Claudel, the exhibition follows the creation of a new, modern art, free of convention, taking in Expressionism and Abstraction. The exhibition includes some of the most famous works of art created during these decades.Important loans come to the exhibition from institutions and private collections worldwide.

2.How many of the phone numbers of your closest and dearest can you remember? How about birthdays or the addresses of post offices?
If you suspect the numbers you can remember are fewer than you have ever been able to before, there is a very good chance that you are right. It's likely that you are exhibiting a phenomenon known as "digital amnesia" or "Google effect" — a phrase created by a cyber-security group Kaspersky Lab to describe forgetting information that you trust a digital device to store and remember for you.
According to a study carried out last year, digital technology is not just transforming the way we live and work;it is changing the way we think, learn, behave, and remember.More than half of the 6,000 European adults surveyed in the study remembered the phone number of the house they had lived in when they were 10 years old but they were unable to recall the phone numbers of their current workplaces due to the development of digital technology.
When faced with a question,36 percent of those surveyed said they would jump online to locate an answer before they even bothered trying to recall whether they already knew the answer.Travelers have no problem using electronic map-readers to find remote locations, but almost one in four reported that as soon as the thing stopped working, they didn't know what to do.
Dr Maria Wimber,a lecturer at the University of Birmingham's School of Psychology, said, "Looking up information online, instead of trying to recall it ourselves, makes us shallower thinkers.Given that our brains clearly have a capacity limit, smartphones can strengthen our memory, because they store information outwards, and thereby free up our brain capacity." She said, "Forgetting is in no way a bad thing."
Across the world, scientists are currently trying to work out how our addiction to high-tech devices is affecting us.They are studying everything from what technology is doing to cognitive (認(rèn)知的) development in the young to whether adults have started using their smartphones instead of thinking to puzzle things out.
(1)What does "digital amnesia" refer to?
A.People pay less attention to cyber security.
B.People enjoy recalling their past experiences.
C.People lack the motivation to learn something new.
D.People turn to digital devices for stored information.
(2)What can be learned from the participants' behavior?
A.Digital technology is developing very badly.
B.People benefit much from technology in every aspect.
C.People's thinking ability weakens due to technology.
D.The simplified life is more suitable for modern people.
(3)How did Maria react to people's relying on technology for information?
A.Supportive.
B.Objective.

3. From Dec 7 to 19,delegates from around the world met at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (also known as COP15),in Montreal,Canada. After two weeks of intense debate at COP15,delegates agreed on Dec 19 to adopt a landmark plan to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. "Finally,we reached our destiny. We adopted the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework," Huang Runqiu,COP15 president and China's minister of ecology and environment, announced on Dec 19.
The new framework is a commitment by 196 parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity to conserve at least 30 percent of the Earth's land and ocean area by the next decade. It also will increase the expected annual financial assistance from developed countries through 2030 to help developing nations with biodiversity protection.
The aim of COP15 is to ensure biodiversity loss is changed by 2030,and that humans are able to live in harmony with nature by 2050.To realize these objectives can be very challenging. At COP10 in Nagoya,Japan in 2010,the parties agreed on the 20 Aichi Biodiversity Targets (愛知生物多樣性目標(biāo)).But,as of now, none of the 20 objectives has been fully realized.
It is important to turn consensus into effective actions.Yet,as recent talks have shown,an aspect of effective international action on stopping climate change is the cooperation of developed countries.Developed countries, however, have fallen short of their responsibility as they have failed to fulfill the obligations according to the COP convention to provide funding and technology to poorer nations who lack the means to combat climate change.
To solve this problem, the framework creates a new biodiversity fund within the UN's existing Global Environment Facility. This came about as a compromise between developing nations, which wanted a new fund, and developed countries, which did not.In addition,a global youth initiative (倡議) was also released, hoping young people to be leaders and advocates for biodiversity conservation.
(1)What is the aim of COP15?
A.To save at least 30 percent of the Earth's land and ocean area by next decade.
B.To stop biodiversity loss and promote harmony between man and nature.
C.To strengthen the cooperation between developed and developing countries.
D.To provide funding and technology to poorer nations to fight climate change.
(2)Why is COP10 mentioned in the passage?
A.To show the parties didn't fulfill the obligation.
B.To show the parties didn't take the objectives seriously.
C.To show it is difficult to realize the objectives of COP 15.
D.To show Japan didn't hold the meeting successfully.
(3)Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.International cooperation is important.
B.A new framework is made in the COP15.
C.Joint efforts are needed to fight climate change.
D.Historic COP 15 deals are released on biodiversity.組卷:1引用:2難度:0.3

4.How to Organize Your Digital FilesSearching for a file on your computer is a whole lot easier than digging through a pile of papers, yet it's far from being a perfect system.Lately,it's been hit-or-miss for me. (1)
Use "resources", "in progress", "final",and "scrap" folders for projects.
There are plenty of ways to title your subfolders for projects, but one of the most intuitive(使用簡(jiǎn)便的) is to have folders for stages of your project. (2)
(4)
It's near impossible to find a photo quickly when you have thousands of photos all named something like "20211108_0978234.jpg." So for photos,I like to have a date structure and folders for key events or categories, such as:2021 >01 (for the month)>2021-01 Mom and Dad 50 Anniversary LA.This way,you can either browse your photos by year and month or search for folders that include "Mom", "Dad", "Anniversary",or "LA."
Use tags.
In addition to creating a folder structure that works for you, consider tagging files. (5)
A.With tags, you can connect multiple files across folders.
B.For photos, use a date structure and keywords for your folders.
C.This way,you can always know which is the final project file to grab.
D.The standards will keep files organized and make them easier on the eye.
E."In progress" is for the current working version or versions of the project.
F.To find files more efficiently,I've been rearranging my digital filing system.
G.Move your photos to a more specific folder or back them up on an external storage device.組卷:12引用:8難度:0.5

38. "Judy, hurry up!Let's go to the beach!" That was a familiar morning call from my older brother,Sirin.Hearing that,I would spring up quickly and we would set off on our journey.Raised by our grandparents in Savanna,we experienced our happiest moments there.Nestled between the mountains and the sea, with its lush green trees,crystal-like ocean, and clear blue sky,Savanna was like a small village from a fairy tale.
Sirin and I often enjoyed the gentle sea breeze as we explored the breathtaking coast, with the endless, open water beside us and the vast, clear sky overhead. We felt a sense of freedom to wander the sandy beach or experience the excitement of sailing out to sea, delighting in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature's wonders. When we grew tired, leisurely walking on the soft, warm sands to collect unique, fascinating seashells brought us a different kind of peaceful joy.The friendly, warmhearted villagers treated us like family, often sharing their freshly-caught seafood with us.
Three years later,we were taken away from the village to receive a better education by our parents.Occupied with our study,we rarely visited our beloved grandparents, only calling them occasionally. We gradually adapted to the fast-paced city life and found it more efficient and convenient.Whenever we had an appetite for seafood, our dad would simply order it through his phone, and it would be delivered to our doorstep within minutes. However, deep within us,we sometimes longed for the simple pleasures of village life.We were told by our grandparents that more and more tourists flooded into the village, which strengthened our desire to return. So,when the eagerly-awaited summer vacation arrived this year,we finally made our dream trip back to our childhood paradise. After greeting our grandparents with hugs and smiles,we eagerly headed towards the sun-kissed seaside to relive our cherished memories.
