2.14-year-old Ruhani Ahluwalia is a tenth-grade student at Harmony School of Innovation,a public charter school in southwest Fort Worth.Since age 11,the girl has been working in summers in a lab at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth researching cancer cells, testing drugs that can kill cancer cells while limiting the side effects to healthy cells.
It's a special mission (任務) guided by the heart because she lost a great aunt to cancer when she was in the sixth grade. "The tragic death of my aunt, who had suffered from cancer for 13 years, inspired me to research possible cancer treatments," Ruhani explained in one written description of her research. "What ended up really damaging her was the chemotherapy (化療) and the effects of it because chemotherapy, instead of being directed to not just killing the cancer cells of the body, kills both cancer and normal cells." Because of this, most of her aunt's organs shut down as she battled with cancer.
During the summer between the sixth and seventh grades,Ruhani said, she began research with little knowledge in the study of cancer and with help from her mother,Parmeet Jodhka."She taught me the necessary biology. And the knowledge I gain has been adding up every year, every month, and even every day," she said. "What I know today,I did not know back then."
Ruhani said she had to learn everything outside of school.Guided by her mother,a microbiology professor at Tarrant County College, she was able to start working in a research lab.Jodhka also found mentors (導師) to guide Ruhani in a research lab, among whom was Andras Lacko, professor of physiology and a member of the Institute for Cancer Research. "She is rather unique," Lacko said.
Ruhani spent her recent summer Vacations in the university lab working from about 10 a.m.jye.ai 3 p.m.She has presented her findings at many science fairs (博覽會).Ruhani's list of accomplishments is five pages long and includes placing third in Brazil's science fair,MOSTRATEC,for her breast cancer research.

9.If there's one thing I can't stand people saying,it is "I'm no good at anything.I don't have any talent",I just don't buy that at all.To me,everyone has at least one talent, and while it sometimes takes you a lifetime to find,it does exist. There was a time when I didn't believe that. What changed my mind was a seemingly small event that took place in 1953.
At that time I was a high school student.I was a funny-looking skinny boy named Eugene Orowitz, who weighed barely 100 pounds,I was a good student, but as far as I was concerned,in just about every other department I was a loser.I wanted to fit in,to be someone and do something well. But I hadn't found anything I was good at.One sunny afternoon, our gym class went out to the school's running track. The teacher taught us all various track and field events.I was a loser in all of them. Then came the javelin(標槍).Suddenly something inside me began saying,"Try it!Try it!" I had to wait my turn, though, trying not to look too eager. Finally, when everyone had had a chance to throw-the best throw going about 30 yards-I looked at the teacher.
"Hey,Orowitz,you want to try?"he asked.
Embarrassed,I looked down, but managed to nod my head.
"Well, come on then,"he said impatiently, and handed me the javelin.Behind me I could hear some of my classmates laughing. As I grasped the javelin in my hand,I was seized with a strange feeling-a new-found excitement. For some crazy reason,I was relaxed over what I was about to do,even though I'd never done it before.I raised the javelin over my head, took six quick steps and let the thing go.The same voice that had urged me to throw it,now told me it was a good throw.
Paragraph 1:
I watched as the javelin took off.My heart quickened_______
Paragraph 2:
That night I took the javelin home with me.______組卷:17難度:0.6
