  • 2.A few years ago,I was an English professor, and I asked my students to finish a paper during the holiday.Mike, one of my students, came to class without it.He explained that his safe (保險(xiǎn)柜)had been stolen by a worker who was repairing his house. His notebook computer was in the safe, where his paper was.I was sure that he didn't tell a lie because he had been a really good student.
Then over the two weeks,Mike started to show up to class looking very tired. He said that he was on a hunt for the guy who stole his safe, and he was spending late nights with his cousin driving around looking for the thief because they knew his car. They wanted to find the thief and get the safe back because his living expenses were in it besides the paper.
Then Mike rewrote the paper and turned it in.It wasn't up to his usual quality, and he still kept coming to class looking like he hadn't slept all night. One day,he came very happily to my office, and he reported that he had found the thief after a long search that involved experiencing dangerous situations. He said that they found the thief's car in front of a big super-market,and they caught him and sent him to the police station.
I read the news that Mike had in fact put an end to the thief's attempt to steal from the supermarket. It turned out that Mike got his money and notebook computer back.I gladly accepted his original paper, and it got a much higher grade than the rewritten one because of his virtues. And I reminded him that he should be responsible for his own safety and talk to me or other teachers first if he met with anything like that.

A.He was often late for class.
B.He always got low marks in exams.

B.He practised driving with his cousin.
C.He went to the class which the professor taught.
D.He sought for the house repairman who had stolen his safe.
(3)What happened to the thief finally?

    A.He voluntarily admitted the theft.
B.He was handed over to the police.
C.He escaped from a big supermarket.
D.He was reported caught by the professor.
    (4)Which words best describe Mike?

    A.Brave and honest.
    B.Imaginative and creative.
    C.Smart but lazy.
    D.Poor but happy.

  • 3.The biggest challenge faced by travelers especially those who like to have a backpacking trip is how to ensure a steady supply of clean clothes. Now,thanks to a great invention called Scrubba Wash Pack, that worry may be a thing of the past.
The portable washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2010,while planning to climb Mt.Kilimanjaro.Struck by the limited packing space,he got inspiration from traditional washboards to create a bag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he quitted his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag's design.By 2012,the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anyone wishing to travel light.
Not surprisingly, the bag worth 55 dollars was an instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However,Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a flaw with his invention-dirty clothes had to be carried around in a separate bag!The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Pack solves that problem.
In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two to three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out and the clothes are massaged for a few minutes. After a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried.According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What's even more amazing is that with a capacity to hold 13-liters of water,it can be used to wash more clothes at a time.
The best part is that the 99-dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it's not in use. With the Scrubba Wash Pack, wandering through foreign cities searching for a washing shop,or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past!
(1)What led Ash Newland to create the Scrubba Wash Bag?

    A.His job requirements.
    B.A traditional washboard.
    C.His interest in invention.
    D.His personal experience.
(2)Why wasn't Ash Newland satisfied with his former invention?

    A.Clothes couldn't be washed well.
B.The invention was not so convenient.
C.The bag couldn't contain enough water.
D.The cost of the invention was very high.
(3)It can be inferred that the improved Wash Pack

A.turns to be much environmentally friendlier
B.will replace the traditional washing machines
C.will be widely used by more travelers in the future
D.can encourage more people to travel a long distance
(4)What is the passage mainly about?

    A.Introducing a great new invention.
    B.Explaining the development of backpack
C.Listing some common problems for travelers.
D.Comparing two kinds of washing machines.

  • 9.My husband and I enjoy seeing life through the eyes of our children. It's amazing to watch as they discover their world.
While we were outdoors last summer enjoying the sunshine, our oldest daughter,Kaytlin, called me to the doorway.Beneath the steps was a baby red squirrel.
We watched it from a distance, not wanting to disturb it or scare off its mother. But after a long wait-and looking all around our house for signs of a nest or a mother-we realized the tiny squirrel was lost.
Shaking terribly,he was weak, thin, and hungry. We tried to find an expert to help, but the Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website showed that there were no wildlife experts in our area. After some quick research,we concluded that the best way to give the squirrel a fighting chance was to care for him ourselves. So a trip to the local store for milk and supplies was in order.
More research taught us how much to feed him,how to estimate his age,how and when to wean(斷奶)him, and that we should let him go as soon as he could survive on his own.
Our daughters and I took turns in feeding"Squirt."Kaytlin took on the most responsibility. She taught him to eat from a bottle, and she woke in the night for his feeds.
To our relief,Squirt soon became healthy and strong.Within a few weeks he became more active.
He would chatter(吱吱叫)for his next meal, playfully go around the girls, and lie down on them for sleep. It wasn't long before he was weaned onto solid food and reintroduced to the wild.
His first few visits to the great outdoors were funny.Just like a child,he would play in the grass some and then run back to Kaytlin for safety.Soon she had him climbing trees and finding nest material.
