  • 2.When people think of winter sports, they usually think of ice skating, skiing or snowboarding.Without doubt, these are some of the most popular winter sports—although, thanks to man-made snow we can play most of these sports all year round!
Last weekend,I went snowshoeing with a group of teachers from my school.Although I had walked in very deep snow almost two years ago,I had never tried snowshoeing before.A snowshoe is,actually,a large plastic frame(框架) which you fix to your own shoes. The snowshoe increases the surface area of your feet, therefore making you less likely to sink in the snow.
At first,it felt a little strange—a bit like wearing flippers(腳蹼)when you swim!I felt quite uncomfortable to start with, and it was difficult to climb over the fallen trees with the snowshoes fixed to my feet. However,I love hiking and am used to walking in mountainous areas so I soon got used to it.I loved walking through the forest and seeing all the trees covered in snow!At times, walking uphill in the snow was hard, especially when there were rocks under the snow. That said, once we reached the top it was worth it!The mountain we climbed was called "Le Tanet" and it was 1,292 m high. That's higher than Snowdon, the tallest mountain in Wales! The sky was a bit grey, but the views were fantastic.I managed to get some great photos. After taking lots of photos,we started the descent. In some ways, going down the mountain was harder than going up.It was easy to slip in the snow.
At the bottom,we had a hot drink in a small wood house. It was surely needed after a few hours of walking in the cold! Before we went home,I had a go at sledging(乘雪橇),which I'd never tried before! It was great fun!
Overall,I'd really suggest snowshoeing as an alternative(替代物) to the more well-known winter sports.Besides being a lot cheaper than skiing,it's easier and is considered to be a lot safer!

(1)The author soon got used to walking with the snowshoes because he
    .
    A.had experience in ice skating
B.often climbed trees in the forest
C.was good at swimming with flippers
D.often went hiking in mountainous areas
(2)What does "the descent" in paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Going down the mountain.
    B.Taking a lot of photos.
    C.Enjoying the beautiful scenery.
    D.Falling down in the snow.
(3)What does the author think of snowshoeing at last?

    A.Fun.
    B.Uncomfortable.
    C.Dangerous.
    D.Practical.
(4)What type of writing is this text?

    A.A sports report.
    B.An advertisement for sledge.
    C.A personal experience.
    D.A travel guide.

  • 3.People often have the impression that Chinese characters are extremely difficult to learn. In fact,if you were to try to learn how to write Chinese characters, you would find that they are not nearly as difficult as you may have imagined. And they certainly qualify as forming one of the most attractive, beautiful, logical, and scientifically constructed writing systems in the world. Each stroke(筆畫(huà)) has its own special significance. If you are familiar with the rules of Chinese characters, you will find it very easy to remember even the most complicated looking character, and never miss a stroke.
The earliest known examples of Chinese written characters in their developed form are carved into tortoise shells and ox bones. Most of these characters are pictographs.Archaeologists of various countries have learned that most early writing systems went through a pictographic stage,as did the Egyptian hieroglyphics. Most writing systems, however, eventually developed a phonetic(語(yǔ)音的) alphabet to represent the sounds of spoken language rather than visual images observed in the physical world.
One notable feature of Chinese characters is the "radical". "Radical" in English means "root".For example, the characters yu"language",shuo"talk",and lun"discuss" all share the yan radical, which means "language," and gives the reader a clue to the meaning of the character as a whole. The characters xiu"rotten",shan"cedarh",tao"peach" and lin"forest" ,all contain the mu "wood" or "tree" radical, indicating one of their shared key characteristics. If you know the radical of a character, you can usually get a general idea of the meaning of the character.Although there is a theoretical total of almost 50,000 written Chinese characters, only about 5,000 of these are frequently used;and the total number of radicals is only 214.So learning to read and write Chinese is not nearly so difficult a task as it may at first seem.

(1)According to the author,Chinese characters are
    .
    A.extremely difficult to learn
B.a(chǎn)s difficult as you may have imagined
    C.difficult to remember
    D.scientifically constructed
(2)Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.All the Chinese characters are pictographs
B.Some strokes are more important than others.
C.There are rules in forming the Chinese characters.
D.Some writing systems eventually developed a phonetic alphabet.
(3)Which radical do the characters chi "eat",he "drink",wen "kiss",and wei "feed" contain?

    A.The kou "mouth" radical.
    B.The mu"wood" or "tree" radical.
    C.The zu "foot" radical.
    D.The yan "language" radical
    (4)The passage is mainly about
    .
    A.the Chinese writing system
B.the strokes of the Chinese characters
    C.pictographs
D.the radical of the Chinese characters

  • 4.More than 10 million Chinese cultural relics have been lost overseas, lots of which were stolen and illegally shipped out of China during the times of war before 1949.About 1.67 million pieces are housed in no more than 200 museums in 47 countries, which accounts for 10 percent of all lost Chinese cultural relics, and the rest are in the hands of private collectors.
Most of these treasures are owned by museums or private collectors in the United States,Europe,Japan and Southeast Asian countries. There are more than 23,000 pieces in the British Museum, most of which were stolen or bought for pennies more than 100 years ago.
The major method to recover these national treasures was to buy them back.In some cases, private collectors donated the relics to the government. Also, the government can turn to official channels to demand the return of relics.
In 2003,a priceless bronze pig's head dating from the Qing Dynasty was returned to its home in Beijing after it was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 140 years ago.Macao entrepreneur Stanley Ho donated 6 million yuan to buy it back from a US art collector and then donated it to the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.
Although buying-back is the most feasible way to recover the lost treasures, limited funding is always a big headache.
In recent years, the Chinese government has improved efforts to recover the precious cultural relics lost overseas. It has started a national project on the recovery of the treasures and has set up a database(數(shù)據(jù)庫(kù)) collecting relevant information. It has signed several international agreements with many countries on this matter, and is also looking for international cooperation to recover the relics by working closely with several international organizations.

(1)What is the passage mainly about?

A.The best way to recover cultural relics.
B.The efforts to recover Chinese cultural relics.
C.Stanley Ho donated a bronze pig's head to Beijing.
D.Chinese cultural relics were stolen by the Anglo-French Allied Army.
(2)What we can know about the bronze pig's head?

A.It was made in the Ming Dynasty.
B.It is now in the Poly Art museum in Beijing.
C.It was donated by the French government to China.
D.It was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 150 years ago.
(3)What does the underlined word "feasible" in Paragraph 5 mean?

    A.possible
    B.difficult
    C.wonderful
    D.careful
(4)What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.China has enough money to buy all the cultural relics back.
B.Many countries have returned the lost cultural relics to China for free.
C.The Chinese government has done a lot to recover the lost cultural relics.
D.China is preparing to set up a database to collect information about the lost cultural relics.

  • 5.Should We Create More National Parks to Save Endangered Animals?
Don't you find it worrying that more and more species of animals are in real danger of becoming extinct?(1)
And I think the best way to do this is for governments to create more national parks .(2)
If this environment is destroyed—for example, when farmers clear a forest for new fields,or trees are cut down to make profits—many animals are unable to survive, and more species are likely to become extinct.
In addition, national parks protect animals from the danger of being hunted.A major reason why many species are endangered is that these animals are killed by hunters. They hunt animals to make money. (3)
On the other hand, some people fight against the creation of national parks because they consider it is wrong to interfere with nature. They believe that wild animals are happier living in their natural environment. (4)
They also point out that a few species are more likely to produce young animals in the wild than in national parks.
All in all, these disadvantages are far less important than the benefits of national parks. (5)
As a matter of fact, they protect animals from their greatest enemies, that is,human beings.

A.To begin with, animals are important to humans.
B.Some hunters even hunt animals simply for sport.
C.I personally believe that we must save these animals.
D.These parks allow animals to live in a safe environment.
E.Firstly, national parks protect these animals' natural environment.
F.They say though the animals may face danger, they enjoy a free life.
G.There is a heated discussion about whether to create more national parks.
