2.The world becomes a better place when we not only recognize that everyone has bad days, but when we also care enough to act accordingly. No matter what kind of bad experience we experience,we should treat it actively.Fourth-grade teacher Rachel Harder recognized this, and she found an amazing way to help out both her students and their families.
A few years ago,the Kansas teacher attended a trauma(心理創(chuàng)傷)conference. She learned that some police stations partner with schools so they can let teachers know when one of their students has a police encounter, something that could cause them to need extra care or attention.A year after the conference,Rachel had a student with autism(自閉癥)who frequently had tough days.To support the student,Rachel told his mom to simply text her "handle with care" to let her know when it was going to be one of those days.
The simple method was such a success that Rachel decided to send all her students home with a note for their parents. It explained what the "Handle with Care" system was and how they could take advantage of it.In no time, parents began to show their appreciation for Rachel's incredible act of kindness. But Rachel's sympathy didn't end with her class.Word spread of the amazing system, and teachers across the country began giving it a shot in their own classrooms.Printouts can be found on the Smart School House website, and the feedback has been extremely positive!
Even though teachers can sometimes tell when a student is having a tough day just by the way they're acting,Rachel said these simple texts allow educators to make minor adjustments in advance that,in turn, make the whole day better for everyone. "It's important for me to give kids a few minutes of extra time or space," she said, "and it's easy to give."
(1)What does the underlined word "this" in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.The tough time in life.
B.The beauty of nature.
C.A positive attitude to hardship.
D.An extreme working style.
(2)How did Rachel help the student with autism?
A.By getting assistance from some police stations.
B.By knowing his state at home from his mother.
C.By discussing his trauma in a conference.
D.By supporting him to do what he wants.
(3)Why did Rachel send notes to the parents of all her students?
A.To prove the behavior is efficient.
B.To explain the kindness to the parents.
C.To gain the parents' sympathy for herself.
D.To show her concern about every student.
(4)Which of the following can best describe Rachel?
A.Responsible and considerate.
B.Energetic and grateful.
C.Curious and courageous.
D.Humorous and warm-hearted.組卷:10引用:2難度:0.3 -
3.It's a sunny afternoon at the Bronx Zoo,in New York City.Children are excited as a female Asian elephant named Happy comes into view.Waving her ears from side to side and wrapping her trunk around the fence leisurely,Happy seems to be living a happy life.
The Bronx Zoo is one of about 60 zoos in the U.S.jye.ai you can see an elephant. With the number of Asian elephants declining every year --only about 50,000 are left in the wild--a zoo might be the only chance any of us will ever get to see one.
But the Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP),an animal-rights group, says Happy is lonely.A fence separates her from Patty, another elephant.Contact through a fence isn't enough, the NhRP says.Steven is the group's president."We understand what Happy's life means to her," he says,"which is almost nothing at all."
So the NhRP is taking the Bronx Zoo to court. The group says Happy should be moved to a protected area where she can have space to hang about and interact with other elephants. The NhRP's case against the Bronx Zoo is the first of its kind in the U.S.The group is relying on a legal order meant for humans. It says a person who has been unlawfully imprisoned must be released. The NhRP will argue in court(法院) that Happy should have that same right.
Experts say elephants are intelligent and thrive(繁榮)when they form social ties in the wild.Joyce Poole studies them in Africa. She thinks keeping elephants in a city is "a recipe for disaster", "As you can imagine,if you were locked behind bars and lost freedom, would there be much you could do?"she says. But the Bronx Zoo insists that Happy is well cared for according to animal protection laws.Besides, some people claim removing animals like Happy from zoos would be a mistake because zoos reach more people than any other group involved with conservation. They believe if there's a time when children can no longer visit zoos to grow up with a connection to the animals,it'll come at a great cost.
(1)What do the first two paragraphs mainly tell us?
A.Asian elephants are becoming extinct.
B.Zoos allow people to bond with wild animals.
C.Zoos are the safest shelter for Asian elephants.
D.The elephants in zoos are disturbed by visitors.
(2)Why is the NhRP taking the Bronx Zoo to court?
A.The zoo breaks animal protection laws.
B.They find Happy is suffering from ill health.
C.They think the zoo restricts (限制) Happy's freedom.
D.The zoo fails to meet the visitors' requirements.
(3)What is Joyce's attitude to keeping elephants in a city?
A.Opposed.
B.Uncaring.
C.Supportive.
D.Careful.
(4)What can we infer from the text?
A.The court will stand by the Bronx Zoo.
B.Children will have less access to nature.
C.More wild animals will be released from zoos.
D.It will be challenging for the NhRP to win the case.組卷:1引用:1難度:0.3 -
4.Although computer technology is often necessary today, using a pen or pencil activates more areas of your brain than a keyboard does. You can potentially remember more by handwriting, according to a new study.
The potential benefits of handwriting for memory have been debated for some time. The new study set out to answer one question:How does handwriting compare to using a keyboard when it comes to remembering new information?
In all.24 participants took part.Researchers asked each of them to write with a pen and then each was also asked to type on a keyboard. While performing these tasks, each volunteer wore a cap that held electrodes(電極)next to their head.It looked somewhat like a hair net fitted with 256 sensors. Those sensors recorded the participants' brainwaves. The electrodes noted which parts of the brain turned on during each task. And they showed that writing turned on memory areas in the brain while typing didn't.
Audrey van der Meer, the new study's leader, says this suggests that when we write by hand,we remember better. "This is because writing involves complex movements that activate more areas of the brain. The increased brain activity gives the brain more 'hooks' to hang your memories on," she explains.Van der Meer also points out that writing by hand is related to visual notetaking. "Rather than typing blindly, the visual notetaker has to think about what is important to write down. Then, key words can be interlinked by boxes, arrows and small drawings," she adds.
This study does not recommend banning digital devices(設(shè)備).In fact, its authors point out, computers and other devices with keyboards have become necessary in modern society.Keyboarding can especially benefit those with certain special needs(such as if they have trouble using their hands) and typing beats writing when it comes to speed, they add.
(1)Why were participants asked to wear caps in the study?
A.To record their brainwaves.
B.To inform them of their tasks.
C.To allow them to focus on writing.
D.To protect their heads like hair nets.
(2)What does Audrey van der Meer try to explain?
A.Why handwriting is more complex than typing.
B.Why the brain works when it comes to learning.
C.Why handwriting helps remember information.
D.Why key words are helpful to visual notetaking.
(3)What is the study's authors' view on typing?
A.It relieves people's hands.
B.It remains vital and helpful.
C.It is not worth recommending.
D.It is more challenging than writing.
(4)Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A.How Can You Remember New Information?
B.Handwriting Benefits Health in the Long Run
C.Should Typing Take the Place of Handwriting?
D.Handwriting Is Better for Memory Than Typing組卷:7引用:5難度:0.5
