  • 1.Paragliding(滑翔傘運(yùn)動) is a kind of flying, but instead of the wing(機(jī)翼) being made of metal, wood or plastic,it is made of nylon or polyester. The wing is attached to a hamess(安全帶) by lines where a pilot sits, similar to a parachute(降落傘).
       Is it safe?
Paragliding is as safe as sailing and deep-sea diving. The big advantage is that it's probably the slowest form of flying,so if you do crash, you'll hit the ground quite gently! It's a very relaxing sport as you're mostly sitting down.Yet,you'll probably experience pain in the parts of the body you didn't know you had while learning, but many of those will be due to the walk up the training hill to start.
       Where do I learn?
There are lots of schools, mainly based inland by suitable hills or mountains, and there are also schools on the coast near high mountains. These are very attractive, though the scenery of landing in the sea seems to discourage beginners! It takes seven days to get your basic license;then you're free to fly independently at sites across the country.
       What do I need?
Pilots normally wear warm clothes in case they get very high up,and a helmet in case they fall down on landjye.aig.In terms of equipment, schools provide basic training, canopies, hamesses, etc. However, you'll probably want to buy your own more advanced equipment, which you'll be able to choose much better
once you've tried some out on your course.
       Who can do it?
There's no upper age limit if your instructor judges you are able, but the youngest is 14.Anybody with
good eyesight and good balance is a good paraglider pilot.
Flying a paraglider is a great sport. We hope to see you in the air with us this season!

  • 2.As the song "Bridge Over Troubled Water"echoed across the ice rink at the Beijing 2022,Chinese skaters Sui Wenjing and Han Cong completed their touching but powerful performance on Long Program, which successfully earned them their first-ever Olympic championship title and China's second gold in the pair skating event at the Olympic Games.(The first was from Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo at 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.) Also,it was a perfect conclusion to their 15 years of cooperation.
Sui and Han,born in 1995 and 1992 respectively, had won almost every youth competition they took part in when they were young, yet constant injuries and accidents created a massive barrier to overcome when it came to reaching the Olympic podium(領(lǐng)獎臺).
In 2014,an ankle injury caused Sui constant pain, forcing the pair lose their qualification for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. That should have been their first opportunity for Olympic gold. "It was a huge regret for us after preparing so much," recalled Sui.
In 2016,Sui finally underwent foot ligament(韌帶) surgery, after which she went through a long recovery period. The doubt about whether she would ever skate again almost left her in despair. For Han,the training arena and the hospital were the only two places that Han would go.
After four years of waiting, the pair had the chance to compete at Pyeongchang 2018.Their performance there won them a silver medal.
Another four years later in Beijing, the then two-time world champions finished their entire routine with a total of 155.47 points, surpassing Team China's top competitor,ROC'S Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov, who won silver.
Talking about her future career direction,Sui said she is applying to be a chorcography major,as
she believes figure skating is a combination of this art form and skating techniques."I have too many
creative ideas for figure skating. It requires continuous learning and of course an endless passion for
skating as well as perseveration, which is the key to success."

(1)What does the first paragraph focus on?

A.Good performance of the two skaters.
    B.Sui and Han's Olympic championship.
    C.Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
D.China's two golds in great sports events.
(2)What can we know about Sui and Han's experiences?

A.Their 15-year cooperation was filled with ups and downs.
B.Physical problems had bothered the pair for 4 years.
C.Han had to stop practising when Sui was in hospital.
D.The 2014 Olympics laid the foundation for their final success.
(3)What saying can be used to summarize the pair's struggles and fighting?

    A.Practice makes perfect.
B.No way is impossible to courage.
    C.Adversity makes a man wise,not rich.
D.The path to glory is always rugged.
(4)What can be inferred from the text?

A.The pair have participated in four Olympic Games.
B.Sui may retire after winning this Olympic championship.
C.Ranking second in 2018 made the pair completely disappointed.
D.The two gold medals at the Olympic Games are eight years apart.

  • 3.Sleeping and learning go hand in hand, which studies have shown for years.Even a brief sleep can improve your memory and sharpen your thinking. But according to a new study the relationship goes deeper than that—it turns out that a sleeping brain can be taught a thing or two, which is contrary to most scientists' thought.
"The brain is not passive while you are sleeping;you can do quite a lot of things while you are asleep,"said Anat Arzi, who researched the sense of smell and also worked on the new study.
Arzi and her coworkers didn't try to teach the sleeping volunteers any complex information, like new
words or facts.Instead, the scientists taught sleeping volunteers to match smells and sounds.
When we smell something nice,we automatically take deep breaths. When we smell something bad,we automatically take short breaths.Arzi and her coworkers based their experiment on these reactions. It is common sense that our senses don't turn off while we are sleeping.
Once the volunteers fell asleep in the lab,the scientists went to work. They gave the volunteers a whiff
(一陣氣味) of something pleasant, like shampoo, and at the same time played a particular musical note.
The volunteers didn't wake up,but they did hear—and sniff(用鼻子聞) deeply. Then the scientists gave
the volunteers a whiff of something repulsive, like bad fish, and played a different musical note.Again, the volunteers heard and smelled—a short snort(鼻息聲) this time—but didn't wake up.
After just four repetitions, volunteers made a connection between the musical notes and their paired
smells. When the scientists played the musical tone that went with good smells, the sleepers breathed in the air deeply —even though there was no good smell to sniff. And when the scientists played the musical tone that went with unpleasant smells, the sleepers breathed in the air briefly—despite there being no bad smell.

(1)What did most scientists use to think?

A.Sleep could not improve one's memory.
B.Sleep could not make one think quickly.
C.Sleeping and learning were not closely connected.
D.A sleeping brain couldn't learn anything new.
(2)On what knowledge did the researchers base their experiment?

A.That our senses don't stop working while we sleep.
B.That people are more influenced by smell than by sound.
C.That people may be woken up if they smell something bad.
D.That our breathing rate is controlled by the brain.
(3)What does the underlined word "repulsive" in paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A.Strong.
    B.Unpleasant.
    C.Unfamiliar.
    D.Sweet.
(4)What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A.Learning in sleep.
    B.Benefits of a good sleep.
    C.Smells influence sleep.
    D.Music benefits sleep.
