More than 550,000 Americans are homeless, and many have health problems but no access to care.O' Connell and his team, made up of doctors and nurses, are doing something about it.They spend their days walking around where the homeless live—in parks, under bridges, and in the suburbs of town.He knows where most of them sleep and whom to ask if they are missing."I feel like I'm a country doctor in the middle of the city, you know?"he said.
O'Connell went to Harvard Medical School and was on his way to a promising oncology fellowship(腫瘤學(xué) 助學(xué)金)when his chief suggested he take what was supposed to be a one-year position as the founding physician of a new health-care program for Boston's homeless. That turned into a 33-year career at the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, one of the country's largest of its kind.He might have turned out very rosy had he become a highly paid oncologist(腫瘤科醫(yī)生).
"I'm just a doctor. And what I can do is ease your suffering, just as I would as an oncologist," O'Connell said. "You could not find a more grateful population."
And his patients are grateful. "This man is unbelievable!" one said. "He's like Jesus," another added.
"When you see somebody outside, you get them a cup of coffee and sit with them.Sometimes it took six months or a year of offering a sandwich or coffee before someone would start to talk to me.But once they start, they'll come to you anytime because they trust you. It's all about listening," O'Connell told Harvard Magazine.

3.More than two thirds of students are experiencing poor sleep quality and this is linked to mental health problems, new research suggests. The findings, based on more than 1,000 men and women attendi-ng university full-time,also show those with depressive(抑郁的)symptoms were almost four times as likely to suffer from inadequate sleep.
Excessive(過度的)daytime sleepiness(EDS) was a problem among over half the students—they were almost twice as likely to have depression or experience high stress levels.
The authors warn stressors, such as course demands, make college students have sleep disorders which in turn affect academic performance and health. They're calling on universities to do more to promote positive sleep habits and good mental health.
Living away from home for the first time, using stimulants(刺激物)that damage sleep and keeping irregular bedtimes are all factors that make students suffer fro m a lack of quality rest at night. An average of seven hours' sleep has been reported by those attending college while nine hours is considered the ideal for young adults.
Poor sleep and EDS in those attending university have already been identified by studies, but few have probed any link with stress or depression. This new research is the first of its kind.Participants were asked
about their sleep quality,EDS,socioeconomic status, and their body mass index (BMI) was also assessed.
The data was used to evaluate the level of association between sleep quality and stress levels. Results showed a sigruificant link between these factors, and depressive problems and high stress levels. The study
also found that students studying biological and health sciences were more likely to suffer from poor quality of sleep than those studying social and human sciences. The mechanism(機(jī)制)behind sleep disturbance
and depression is not unclear,as is whether mental health problems cause poor quality sleep or vice versa.
(1)Why is it necessary for universities to promote positive sleep habits?
A.Because college students are under heavy course pressure.

9.My Kindergarten Hero We had just completed a unit on community heroes, and I had given my kindergarten class a task to write or draw about their favorite hero. Each child was busy creating colorful masterpieces such as firefighters, policemen and doctors.Several students had chosen to draw larger-than-life brothers and sisters or moms and dads.
However, one little boy was having difficulty with the assignment.Cameron had touched my heart early in the school year.He had dark brown hair and wore his thick glasses. He looks like a younger version of Harry Potter at best.He often snorted(鼻息聲)when he laughed, and the rest of the class would laugh along with him.
Cameron suffered from autism(自閉癥),but that didn't matter to me or his classmates. We all loved him just the way he was.He was full of wonderful stories and brought a special feeling to our classroom.I sat and watched as Austin worked with Cameron.Austin had a wonderful way of interacting with Cameron and he helped him find his hero.Within a few minutes,Cameron quickly began drawing blue lines and curves on his paper—he was particularly fond of the color blue.
Finally,it was time for everybody to share their hero pictures.I listened as each student proudly stood in front of the class, picture held high, and described his or her hero.Several students described their heroes by giving them superhuman strength. It was finally Cameron's turn to share his hero.Cameron stood up and anxiously placed his large blue stick-figured drawing in front of his face.He then quickly burst out it was a picture of me.He added that I helped him learn things and then quickly sat back down.Tears began to form in the corner of my eyes, but nothing could have prepared me for what happened next.
