2.Eliana Yi dreamed of pursuing piano performance in college, never mind that her fingers could barely reach the length of an octave(八度音階).Unable to fully play many works by Romantic-era composers including Beethoven and Brahms, she tried anyway—and in her determination to spend hours practicing a Chopin concerto(協(xié)奏曲),wound up injuring herself.
The efforts of Professor Carol Leone from the Southern Methodist University(SMU)are changing all that:twenty years ago,the school became the first major university in the U.S,to introduce smaller keyboards into its music program, leveling the playing field for Yi and other piano majors.
Yi,21,tried one of the smaller keyboards, "I remember being really excited, because my hands could actually reach and play all the right notes," she said.
For decades, few questioned the size of the traditional piano. For those with small hand spans(掌距),it's difficult to properly play many works of Beethoven and Brahms. Those who attempt to play them either get used to skipping notes or risk injury with repeated play.Leone is familiar with such challenges.Born into a family of musicians, she favored classical music and pursued piano despite her small hand span and earned a degree as a doctor in musical arts.
The idea of smaller keyboards first met resistance from some traditionalists.Leone also said that when she raised the issue with one Viennese professor,he told her there were already too many pianists anyway.
Though such resistance is fading, there are some very traditional people who think of piano as a competitive thing.Leone said, "This is art,it's not sport. It's about making as much beautiful art as possible, and we should give everybody the opportunity to do that."
(1)Why did Eliana Yi find it hard to play a Chopin concert to well?
A.Her fingers got injured.
B.It was time-consuming.
C.Her hand spans were small.
D.The traditional piano was out of tune.

A.Summarize the previous paragraphs.
B.Provide some advice for pianists.
C.Introduce a new topic for discussion.
D.Add some background information.
(3)What is the Viennese professor's attitude towards smaller keyboards?
A.Unclear.
B.Objective.
C.Disapproving.
D.Positive.

3.When Joseph Cook first landed on the Greenland ice sheet in 2010,he was expecting to see a primitive white environment. What he found was "colorful mix"-from blacks and grays to greens, purples and browns, with blue streams cutting through the ice.jye.ai rainbow colors Cook encountered are created by a collection of tiny life forms that reproduce on the surface of the ice sheet.Biodiversity is usually considered a good thing, but in this case the abundance of tiny life is speeding up ice melt, and likely causing global sea levels to rise faster than scientists have predicted
Cook says the tiny life forms he studies are contributing to the problem. One of these organisms is an algae(海藻)that grows in the thin layer of water on the surface of the ice.jye.ai produces purple-brown-pigment(色素)which acts "like a natural sunscreen," says Cook, protecting the algae from the full force of the Arctic sunlight. The pigment also causes the ice to heat up and melt.
"If you go out on a hot day wearing a black T-shirt,you get warmer than if you go out on a hot day wearing a white T-shirt.The same thing happens on the ice," says Cook. "These algae, like the black T-shirt for the glacier, are causing it to warm up in the sun and melt faster."
Cook's research on a part of the Greenland ice sheet covering 3,900 square miles revealed that algae is responsible for up to 13% of the ice melt.In some localized areas, the algae boosted melting by up to 26%.
Glacier algae are not a new phenomenon-there are records of them in the diaries of polar explorers from the 1870s,says Cook. What's becoming clear is that ice sheets are surprisingly dynamic and complex environments. "There are so many questions to answer," says Cook. "It's kind of like a theme park for a scientist because there's just so much to do."
(1)What is quickening the ice melt?
A.The algae.
B.Human activities.
C.Global warming.
D.Blue melt streams.
(2)Why is the example of wearing a black T-shirt mentioned?
A.To clarify a rule.
B.To explain the phenomenon.
C.To add humour.
D.To make a conclusion.
(3)What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Scientists will avoid exploring polar regions.
B.Cook feels proud of the current results.
C.A theme park will be built on ice sheets.
D.There's a long way for research into ice sheets.
(4)From which is the text probably taken?
A.A news review.
B.A travel brochure.
C.A geography textbook.
D.A science magazine組卷:5引用:2難度:0.5

9.When I was a baby,my parents gave me anything I wanted.I would play with a toy for a while, get bored, and ask my parents for a new one. Then my dad died when I was 2,and I got even more stuff as my mom, friends, and family gave me more and more stuff to try to make me feel better. My mom continued to treat me to whatever I wanted until I was seven and my world crashed.
That was when the real estate (房地產(chǎn)) market crashed. My mom had thought buying houses was a good idea as a way to invest her money to take care of us.After the crash,I went from the kid who got a fine iPod and who had the coolest house,to almost having nowhere to stay.
Since then, when I would ask for a new toy or bike,or even to see a movie my mom would say "I'm sorry, honey! But we really can't afford that right now." But my mom had grown up in a family where money was never a problem,so this change was as big for her as it was for me.My constant requests for toys and video games deepened her concern about our financial situation. But I wasn't used to hearing "no." So,for a year or two,I kept asking for things whether I really needed them or not.
Then something happened that would change my way of thinking forever. My mom had been working really hard all the year, just to pay for the necessities, like our rents, and water and power bills. When she asked me what I wanted for my birthday I said that I wanted a new video gaming system.I didn't know that it was expensive. All I knew was that my friends had them and that I wanted one, too.
