  • 2.Why do Chinese people love hot pot so much?As the winter months are coining in,more and people are silting around a table, enjoying this kind of traditional meal.I find myself wondering what it U about this traditional meal, which has existed for more than 1,000 years. What makes it a Chinese food favorite? It seems that the answer lies beyond the dish itself.
Hot pot isn't just designed to keep you warm during the cold months;it's also a social experience. It's a "theater" cooked food that turns a meal into an event. There is a lot of fun for everyone to have in adding some foods to the hot pot.
Hot pot is eaten over two to three hours. For this reason,it is often considered an evening's entertainment, and a time to spend with friends and families. However, many westerners would be put off by the idea of other people sticking chopsticks in their food. When we come to eat at the table in the UK,we tend to have our own shares, although the experience is still a social one.
A similar experience to the hot pot can be found in Korean barbecue restaurants, which lei you cook your own meat. This allows people to have their meat done however they want.
For most westerners, the idea of going to a restaurant to cook their own food is very strange. But having a go,I find it's now one of my favorite meals in Beijing. The steam from the pot left my clothes smelling of food when I got home, but perhaps this was also part of the experience. When the cold wind is blowing outside,I am sitting around with my good friends, eating and drinking. For me it's like a dinner party where my taste buds and my appetite are equally satisfied in the warm company of friends.

(1)What is the main reason why hot pot is popular in China?

A.It has a history of over 1,000 years.
B.It is a fun social experience.
C.It serves people with many kinds of foods.
D.It keeps people very warm in winter.
(2)We can conclude from the article that British people generally
    .
A.enjoy cooking their own food in restaurants
B.prefer a Korean barbecue to Chinese hot pot
C.don't like sharing food with others in restaurants
D.don't mind the smell of food staying on their clothes
(3)How long do people spend in enjoying the traditional meal?

    A.More than four hours.
    B.Over one hour.
    C.About three hours.
    D.All the evening.
(4)What is the author's attitude to hot pot?

    A.Serious.
    B.Tired.
    C.Humorous.
    D.Appreciative.

  • 3.When someone boards a train in London-entering one of the world's most admired transportation systems-they probably do not have visions of clean beaches and rolling surf of San Diego on the west coast of America. But they would not be wrong if they did, considering that London's Oyster Card is powered by Cubic,a San Diego-based company with headquarters 5,500 miles down the road.
San Diego is the 17th largest city in America, yet it leads the world in biotechnology, clean technology, defense technology and telecommunications, and it is also the third-most patent-intense region in the world. That is because policymakers, businesses and educators in San Diego are working together to create a creativity ecosystem, including some of the world's smartest companies,a talented and loyal workforce,top-rate universities and easy access to international markets.San Diego's world-class universities and research centers foster a talented workforce, and attract top academicians.
Across an ocean and a continent,London is seeing similar economic achievement. The city's exports represent 25 percent of the U.K. 's national exports-a sum that is valued at about £130 billion-and is particularly strong in service exports, where it accounts for 50 percent of the U.K.total.At the same time,it is maintaining its strength in financial and business services, media, tech and architectural surveying and construction services.London also leads the way in the U.K. 's exports of £100 billion of goods and services to the U.S. ,its largest single trading partner. In fact,in 2013 London alone exported nearly £4 billion in goods to the U.S.jye.ai largest market behind the European Union.
So while both cities focus on creating success at home,London and San Diego are also focused on creating a strong international market for what they produce. Both have advanced industries that promote rapid innovation and significant job creation. And they are working together-sharing best practices and challenges, and learning where their trade and investment coincide.

(1)What does London's Oyster Card probably refer to in Paragraph 1?

    A.Fare payment system.
    B.Seafood delivery system.
    C.Fresh water supply system.
    D.Banking management system
(2)The underlined word "academicians" in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by
    .
    A.engineers
    B.lecturers
    C.talents
    D.publishers
(3)What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?

A.London's service exports take up 50% of British total exports.
B.London will outshine other cities in biotechnology.
C.London may lose its strength in business.
D.London's largest market is the European Union.
(4)What can be the best title of the passage?

A.Two Cities of the Same Tale.
    B.Two Cross-continental Cities.
    C.Two Love-and-Hate Cities:London and San Diego.
D.Two Unlikely Twin Cities:London and San Diego.

    Dear members,
I am afraid I won't be able to run our reading club next semester,as I was asked to teach another class on Thursday afternoon—the same time our club usually meets.Besides,it seems we do not have enough people joining this club, although some students did ask about registering. If you really want to keep this club, can you think of any suggestions? Please write to me soon.
    Yours,

  • 9.The big Town Hall clock was striking midnight when Frank began to cross the bridge. The dark night air was cold and a little wet,and the street lamp gave little light.Frank was anxious to get home and his footsteps rang loudly on the silent night.
When he reached the middle of the bridge,he thought he could hear someone coming near behind him.He looked back but could see no one. However, the sound continued and Frank began to walk more quickly. Then he slowed down again, thinking there was nothing to fear in a town as quiet as this.
Just then,he heard short, quick steps closely behind him.By the time he reached the other side of the bridge,he could almost feel someone at his jye.aiels.He turned round and there stood a man in a large coat.A hat was pulled down over his eyes and very little of his face could be seen.
Frank said something about the weather in an effort to be friendly. The man did not answer but asked roughly where Oakfield House was.Frank pointed to a big house in the distance and the stranger continued his way.
Then Frank wondered why the stranger had wanted to find Oakfield House at such an hour.He knew that the people who lived there were very rich.Almost without realizing what he was doing,he began following the stranger quickly.
The man was soon outside the house and Frank saw him look up at the windows.A light was still on and the man waited until it went out. When about half an hour had passed,F(xiàn)rank saw him climb noiselessly over the wall and heard him drop on the ground at the other side.
