Note that length limits, article types and other journal specific information are available on the "Author information" page on each journal website.

2.Asking a teenager to get off their phone for jut an hour during dinner time is sometimes a big ask.So imagine asking them to stay off social media for six year.
This is exactly what mum Lorna asked her son Sivert to do when be turned 12 in an attempt to guide him to clear of the social media addiction.
Mum-of-two Lorna called it the '18 for 18 challenge',offering Sivert $2,500 to stay off all social media sites until his eighteenth birthday-a task he successfully completed.
Lorna explained that the idea for the challenge came from a similar story she heard on the radio about a mum who did the same with her child until they turned 16.It was also fueled by the fear that her son would fall into the same social media trap that her daughter found herself in.
Sivert's older sister had her phone taken away from her in an attempt to get her away from the sites, something she was at first very angry about. "It was not even three weeks later that she thanked us and said she was so happy to not have her phone," mum Lorna recalled. So to avoid having the same issue with her son,she set him the challenge enticing(誘導)him with money.
While he says it was hard to stay off platforms like TikTok and Instagram with his friends always talking about the hot topics and viral videos,Sivert said that it meant that he had more time to focus on his schooling and sport. As a basketball and football player he says he treated the challenge like one of his games and stuck to his focus of winning at the end.
Now that Sivert is of the age to make a mature choice about social media,he has decided to create an Instagram account. The teen is,however, keeping his account private has asked followers to be patient with him while he "figures it out."

D.He broke a world record.
(2)Who gave Sivert's mother inspiration?

(3)What made Sivert complete the task still?
A.His desire to win.
B.His friends' help.
C.His sister's experience.
D.His mother's wisdom.
(4)What can we infer from the ending of the story?
A.Sivert lost some of his followers.
B.Sivert refused his mother's offer.
C.Sivert is still uncertain about his self-control.
D.Sivert has decided not to use Instagram.組卷:6引用:1難度:0.5 -
3.Extracting(提?。〤O2 from the air is one of the best ways to address climate change without preventing billions of people from getting the energy they need. But the trick is what to do with it afterwards.
Common approaches include injecting(注射)it deep underground to get rid of it.But if you could use it to make useful stuff, then it would do double duty and make the products zero-carbon since they wouldn't put extra carbon into the atmosphere. For years, focus has been on making zero-carbon petrol or jet fuel from the extracted carbon using non-fossil fuels to generate the energy needed.
Today,XPRIZE revealed the two winners in this year's 20-million-dollar prize for a competition developed to create breakthrough carbon technologies that turn emissions(排放物;排放)into products with a high net value. The winners were CarbonCure of Canada and CarbonBuilt of California.Interestingly, they both demonstrated technologies focused on decarbonizing(脫碳)the concrete industry.
CarbonBuilt developed a technology that reduces the carbon footprint of concrete by more than 50% while reducing raw material costs.During the curing process,CO2 is directly injected into the concrete mixture where it is chemically transformed and permanently stored.
CarbonCure's technology enables the production of concrete with a reduced water and carbon footprint while increasing the material's reliability. The CO2 is transformed into a permanently embedded mineral which can then be combined with new concrete mixes. The technology is able to reduce the material costs and increase profitability for producers.
Concrete is a major contributor to global warming as producing it releases a huge amount of carbon dioxide.Yet it's the most widely used artificial material, second only to water.Renewable energy sources use much concrete per unit energy produced. If they are to increase enough to make a difference in time to help the planet, getting control of the CO2 in concrete production is essential.
(1)What does the underlined part "double duty" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Extracting CO2 and making useful products.
B.Cutting CO2 emission and saving energy.
C.Removing CO2 and creating value.
D.Storing carbon and reducing waste.
(2)Which is NOT a shared benefit of the two winners' technologies?
A.They permanently store the CO2.
B.They make concrete more reliable.
C.They reduce the carbon footprint of concrete.
D.They lower the cost of concrete.
(3)What is stressed in the last paragraph?
A.To manage concrete emissions.
B.To invest in clean energy sources.
C.To cut the use of concrete.
D.To find an alternative to concrete.
(4)What is the text mainly about?
A.A competition on global crisis.
B.Innovative ways of decarbonization.
C.A revolution in the concrete industry.
D.The possibility of turning CO2 into treasure.組卷:6引用:1難度:0.5

My best friend's mother was a social worker in Detroit,Michigan.Because of that,my friend Victoria and I were introduced early to the world of volunteering.
We did plenty of charity(慈善) work.We always had a good time, and continued to volunteer whenever we had time, often even when we didn't.It became second nature.Hairstyles came and went, but Victoria and I found places to donate our time because that's how we were raised.
One particular morning we signed up for "Paint the Town",an organization in Detroit to help low-income homeowners clean their houses. We were assigned(分配) a dilapidated(破爛的)house in one of the worst communities of the city.I was afraid as we got near to the front door, not knowing who we would find on the other side.We knocked three times quickly and stepped back, waiting to be let in.
When the door opened,my mouth did, too.Standing there was a little old lady with wisps(一束)of white hair and a purple apron(圍裙) tied around her waist.
"Hello," she said,"I'm Amelia. Please come in and I will show you where to start."Her smile shone brightly. "I am just baking some cookies for you girls to eat."
As she led us to the parts of her house that needed painting,my heart softened. Here was one of the scariest looking houses in the city, but behind its doors was a sweet old lady with a cane and a big smile.
Here we were coming to help her,and instead she was doing something for us-baking homemade cookies and serving us tea!
