  • 2.For years,it has been said that newspapers are at death's door.Every year brings more news of closing. But why is the situation so terrible for newspapers?
Newspapers have a long history. The first newspaper was printed in the 1600s.Their most successful period is in the early 20th century.
With the appearance of radio and TV,however, newspaper circulation began to fall.By the mid-20th century, radio and TV had become so popular that people no longer had to depend on newspapers for news. That was especially true for breaking news.
Afternoon newspapers were the first to suffer. After work, more and more people turned on TV instead of opening a newspaper. That was because TV could provide news happening a short time ago. It's true that newspapers couldn't compete with TV on speed, but they could provide in-depth reports that TV news could not.
But newspapers suffered another heavier blow in the 1990s.With the appearance of the Internet, tons of information became free. Many newspaper readers realized that they could read news on the Internet. There seemed to be little reason to pay for a newspaper subscription(訂閱).
So what does the future hold? Will newspapers die?Maybe not. Many newspapers are now making changes. Some are going digital. Some are going farther and taking .the industry to places it has never been to.After all, people still want the news. And many agree that newspapers are still an important source of in-depth news, analysis and opinions. If newspapers disappear completely, there will be nothing to take their place.

(1)According to the passage,in which year was the first newspaper most likely to be printed?

    A.In 1609.
    B.In 1689.
    C.In 1711.
    D.In 1789.
(2)The reason which doesn't cause newspaper circulation to fall is
    .
    A.the appearance of radio
    B.the latest news on TV
    C.the convenience of the Internet
    D.the changes of newspapers
(3)What does the underlined word "circulation" mean in Para.3 according to the passage?

    A.循環(huán)
    B.購(gòu)買(mǎi)力
    C.發(fā)行量
    D.流通
(4)What can you infer(推斷) from the passage?

A.People no longer depend on newspaper for news.
B.People get news on TV faster than in newspapers.
C.Newspapers are still important, they will not disappear.
D.All newspaper readers read news on the Internet in the 1990s.

  • 3.In recent years, there have been many films about robots trying to take over the world.Studies show that up to 20 million factory jobs worldwide could be taken by robots in the next 10 years. Some people are worried about what might happen in the future.
On 8th September,2020,The Guardian published an article written by a robot called GPT-3.It wrote that "robot" comes from the Greek word for "slave" (奴隸) and humans have nothing to fear from robots because they are only here to help humans. However, the fact that a robot could write such an article has made some people feel even more uneasy.Where is the robot technology heading? Can robots and humans work together?
ES--they're here to help humans.Robots are created by humans for humans.Robots take on jobs that are too dangerous for people to do by themselves.Although robots might take some people's jobs, they will create new types of work, and they will possibly create more jobs than they take away.Besides, robots programming could actually make them more trustworthy(值得信賴(lài)) than humans, because they are not influenced by feelings.
No--humans should not trust jye.ai.Robots are already taking over the world.Jobs that used to be done by human beings are now being taken by robots.Although robots are under our control now, that might not always be the case.An experiment in Switzerland found-that some robots had learnt how to lie to each other. With the development of AI (人工智能),robots could start to act in their own interests.Wherever possible, humans should do things themselves.
What's your opinion on this matter?

(1)How do people feel when learning that GPT-3 could write an article?

    A.They feel relaxed.
    B.They feel nervous.

    A.Create new types of work.
    B.Act in their own interests.

D.Learn how to lie to humans.
(3)What can we learn from the text?

A.GPT-3 will take over the world.
B.Some robots have learnt how to be lazy.
C.Robots are still under the control of humans now.
D.20 million people fear that they will lose their jobs.
(4)What would be the best title for the text?

    A.Should humans trust robots?

  • 菁優(yōu)網(wǎng)4.Astronauts on board the International Space Station(ISS)once made history by taking bites of red romaine lettuce(長(zhǎng)葉萵苣).They became the first humans to eat food that was grown in space. The lettuce was planted on the ISS in a small greenhouse called "Veggie",which uses LED lights to help plants grow in space.
First, the astronauts cleaned the lettuce with special sanitizing wipes(消毒紙巾)and then ate it with some salad dressing.
"It was one small bite for man,one giant leap( 飛躍)for ...our journey to Mars," one astronaut,Scott Kelly, later posted on social media.
Space vegetables are a part of the NASA experiment called "Veg-01"-a study on how plants grow without the effects of Earth's gravity(重力).It will allow astronauts to grow and eat their own food during long space explorations.
"If we're ever going to go to Mars someday,we're going to need a spacecraft that is much more self-sustainable (自給自足的) in is food supply," said Kelly.
Growing fresh plants on a spacecraft may also provide oxygen and help keep astronauts alive,NASA said.
Veg-01 started in May 2014.The first batch (一批) of vegetables took 33 days to grow in space before they were taken back to Earth for a safety check. After making sure they were safe to eat, astronauts planted a second batch on July 8.They let the plant grow for another 33 days and were then able to eat it.Astronauts usually only get vegetables when a supply ship comes to the ISS.Now with vegetables grown in space, they can eat them whenever they want.
