1.A man was on the side of the road hitchhiking(搭便車)on a very dark night in the middle of a terrible rainstorm, with no cars on the road. The storm was so strong that the man could hardly see a few feet ahead of him.Suddenly,he saw a car come towards him and stop. The man, without thinking about it,got in the car and closed the door and only then did he realize that there was nobody behind the steering wheel(方向盤)!
The car started to move very slowly. The man looked at the road and saw a curve (拐彎處)coming his way.Terrified,he started to pray, begging for his life.He had not come out of shock when, just before the car hit the curve,a hand suddenly appeared through the window and moved the wheel. The man, paralyzed with fear, watched how the hand appeared every time the car was drawing near a curve. Finally, although terrified, the man managed to open the door and jump out of the spooky car.Without looking back, the man ran through the storm all the way to the nearest town.In a state of complete horror, the man walked into a nearby bar and asked for two glasses of Scotch whisky.
Then, still shaking with fright,he started telling everybody in the bar about the horrible experience he just went through in the spooky car.Everyone in the bar listened in silence and became frightened, with hair standing on end, when they realized the man was telling the truth because he was crying and he was certainly not drunk!
About half an hour later, two other young men walked into the same bar and one said to the other, "Hey,there's a stupid man who jumped into the car while we were pushing it!"

2.Car sharing is another way to drive green that's gaining in popularity, especially in urban areas.People who may not drive every day but still want a car to run errands (差事)or drive on weekends benefit most from car sharing.Car sharing is usually run by a service like Zipcar, though there are non-profit (非營利的)and informal car sharing services.Members pay a monthly fee and have access to an entire fleet of cars when they need one.The cars are parked in fixed spots around the city,so members only need to make a reservation, and then go to the pickup spot.
Car sharing has major environmental benefits because it reduces the number of cars on the road.Members don't drive just because they are in a car. They plan trips, and if they don't need a car, they don't use one.Still,a car is available to them if they need to make a big trip to the grocery store, pick someone up at the airport or if they want to go to the beach for the day.Members also benefit by having access to a car without any of the headaches of ownership. They usually don't have to pay for the gas, insurance or maintenance (保養(yǎng)),and the monthly membership fee is less than a typical car payment. So if you really want to go green but aren't ready to totally give up a car yet,car sharing may be the way to go.
If you still need to get around, but want to go even greener than sharing a car, share a bus!
(1)The author intends to tell us that car sharing
A.has become the most popular way to go to work
B.has become the best way to cut living costs
C.is becoming more and more popular in cities
D.is becoming popular both in urban and rural (鄉(xiāng)村的)areas
(2)We can conclude from the passage that
A.Zipear can't help you if you are running urgent errands

D.Zipcar is a company providing formal car sharing free
(3)The second paragraph mainly tells us
A.why people will share a car
B.why car sharing benefits the environment
C.why car sharing is cheaper than owning a car
D.why a car is available to members
(4)Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.Car sharing has become a new trend (趨勢).

3.For many people, the name Baskin-Robbins is linked to sweet memories of eating ice cream.Irvine Robbins, who helped create this famous company, died in May at the age of ninety. His life's work of making fun and exciting ice cream flavors changed the way Americans enjoy this food.
Irvine Robbins opened his first ice cream store in 1945 in California. At the time, there were no stores that sold only ice cream. His sister's husband,Burton Baskin, also opened his own ice cream stores.

By 1953,they renamed their company Baskin-Robbins.They advertised that they sold 31 kinds of ice cream to show the many choices buyers had. There was one flavor for every day of the month.
Robbins and Baskin sold "Lunar Cheesecake" the day after astronauts landed on the moon in 1969.Other flavors included "ChaChaCha",for cherry chocolate chip, and Robbins' personal favorile "Jamoca Almond Fudge".They said: "We sell fun,not just ice cream."

4.I once had a house guest from Cuba.During his visit,I happened to throw an old broken blender(攪拌機(jī)) in the trash. The next day it was sitting on my counter-in working order. In his world, people simply cannot afford to replace an item which doesn't work properly. They take the time and figure out how to fix it.In Cuba, they are still driving cars from the 1960s,mainly because they do not have a choice.
In contrast, the US is a "throwaway" society.Statistics show that each American produces six pounds of trash per day.I believe a combination of factors has contributed to this phenomenon.
Planned obsolescence(廢棄) is not a secret. It is a manufacturing(制造業(yè)) philosophy developed in the 1920s and 1930s,when mass production became popular. The goal is to make a product or part that will fail,or become less desirable over time or after a certain amount of use. This pressures consumers to buy again.
Planned obsolescence does keep costs down.Instead of making an expensive product that will last a long time, businesses produce more affordable, disposable(一次性的) items. Some electronic items have become so inexpensive that it is cheaper to replace them than to repair them.
Busy people often value their time and convenience more than money. If a car starts to have mechanical problems, replacing it with a newer, more reliable model may be more appealing than tolerating it being in the garage for a week.
In addition, advertising trains consumers to want what is new and improved. It convinces them that the more they have, the happier they will be.
Unlike people in many developing countries,we live in a world of abundance.A study by Dr Timothy Jones of the University of Arizona also found that in the US,40~50 percent of all food ready for harvest is wasted.Abundance and waste soon became closely associated in the American way of life.
(1)In Cuba, people usually fix a broken item instead of buying a new one because
A.wasting is prohibited there
B.they are poor
C.they are interested in fixing things
D.they live a low-carbon life
(2)According to the article,planned obsolescence
A.began before mass production became popular
B.is intended to encourage consumers to buy more things
C.results in higher prices of items
D.requires factories to produce high-quality products
(3)Which of the following is NOT true about the "throwaway" society in the US?
A.People prefer to buy a new blender rather than repair the broken one.
B.A large quantity of food has been wasted.
C.People believe that the more they have, the happier they will be.
D.People all hold the belief that money comes first.

5.Before going outside in the morning, many of us check a window thermometer (溫度計(jì)) for the temperature. This helps us decide what to wear.(1)
Not all the thermometers use the same system to measure temperature. We use a system called the Fahrenheit scale. But most other countries use the Centigrade scale.
Both systems use the freezing and boiling points of water as their guide. (2)
The most common kind of thermometer is made with mercury (水銀) inside a clear glass tube.As mercury (or any other liquid) becomes hot,it expands. As it gets colder,it contracts. That is why on hot days the mercury line is high in the glass tube. (3)
First, take a clear glass juice bottle that has a cap;fill the bottle with colored water.Tap a hole in the center of the cap using a hammer and thick nail.Put the cap on the jar. Then stick a plastic straw (吸管) through the nail hole.
(4)
Finally, place a white card on the outside of the bottle and behind the straw. Now you can see the water level easily.
(5)
As the temperature goes down, the water will contract, and the level in the straw will come down.Perhaps you will want to keep a record of the water level in the straw each morning for a week.
A.We use and depend on thermometers to measure the temperature of many other things in our daily lives.
B.Thermometers measure temperature,by using materials that change in the same way when they are heated or cooled.
C.Now that you know this rule you can make a thermometer of your own that will work.
D.The water will rise in the straw. As the temperature of the air goes up,the water will expand and rise even higher.
E.They label these in different ways.On the Fahrenheit scale water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. On the Celsius scale water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees.
F.Take wax (you may use an old candle if you have one) and melt some of it right where the straw is stuck into the cap to seal (把……粘?。?them together.

I firmly believe that everyone in the world loves their mother. So am I. My mother is a ordinary teacher. She always works hard, just as other mothers do every day. In fact, she isn't good health. She had been suffering from arthritis (關(guān)節(jié)炎) for many years. Despite of this, she never stops working or giving up hope, I still remember the day when my mother accepted a card of congratulations for Teachers' Day from her director. The card was read "Thank you for your hard works; Happy Teachers' Day to you!" At that moment, I was so moving that tears came to my eyes. I am proud of my mother.組卷:1引用:1難度:0.6
