2.Stewart,a California vet at an animal shelter, makes calls to pet owners who have no place to call home again. He has his own practice in town, yet he still finds time for street pets. He's helped roughly 400 animals since 2011,mostly dogs but also a few cats.
It a11 started in 2011,and the Great Recession(大蕭條)had spilled a lot of unfortunate people onto the streets.A small dog sat in a homeless man's lap.Stewart noticed its signs of an allergic reaction to fleas. He approached the man and offered to bring flea medication for the dog's skin. The man said after the treatment, his dog was soon restored to health.
Since then,Stewart has often been found wandering dark alleyways(小巷)and underpass, anywhere he thinks the homeless might be camped out.Stewart pays for almost a11 of the expenses out of his own pocket.
As for the question whether the homeless should even have pets,Stewart determines that more than anybody, they need a pet and deserve a pet and the owner is the pet's home. There's one more pressing reason for the homeless to have their pets."I can't tell you how many times people told me their animals are their reason for getting up in the morning,"Stewart says.
One of those people is Joe,a white-haired middle-aged man who has landed on rough times. He says that his black-and-white mixed breed is his life."When I first hit the streets,I was almost to the point where I had given up,"he says."It is so lucky to have somebody like Dr.Stewart come out here to take care of my dog, which matters a lot".

3.As a result of COVID-19 precautions, many of us are part of this secondary epidemic:people who really need a hug.A survey conducted in 112 countries said more than 50%of the people didn't get enough such physical interaction as cuddling(擁抱).And that was before the pandemic set in.As the COVID-related lockdowns are taking effect, that number increases to 60%,according to a study published in the Medical Research Archives of the European Society of Medicine.Health-care professionals have given a name to this condition-touch starvation.
Touch starvation may sound emotional in the most literal sense, but the idea is supported by hard-core biology. It starts with hormones."Cuddling increases levels of oxytocin, the bonding hormone, and decreases levels of cortisol, the stress hormone,"says Lina Velikova,an immunologist.
A recent study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences have found that this very act can help ease pain, especially if the person you are touching is someone you feel close to personally."Even minor physical contact can be beneficial to both of you,"says Romanoff,PsyD,a clinical psychologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.
Physical touch is an essential part of how human beings communicate.Part of the power of physical touch comes from the very fact that it does not involve spoken language.Body language is often harder to fake. The act of cuddling authentically communicates trust and safety in ways people can't speak.
Not all cuddling is created equal, and there's no one right way to do it.If one way doesn't feel right, try something else.Foot rubs, head rubs, back rubs,hand-holding,laying your head on someone's chest, sitting on a lap or side by side on the couch with legs touching-all these things count. For people who aren't fully comfortable with physical touch and are not accustomed to giving or receiving physical affection,it's important to start slow, both in the quantity and quality of physical contact.
(1)What is touch starvation?
A.A demand for food.
B.A need for physical contact.
C.A shortage of care and love.
D.A feeling of loneliness in crisis.
(2)What is mainly talked about on touch starvation in Paragraph 2?
A.Its cause.
B.Its function.
C.Its meaning.
D.Its influence.
(3)What plays a key role in physical touch?
A.Quantity.
B.Quality.
C.Closeness.
D.Genuineness.
(4)Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Cuddling contributes to our health.

You know how when big things in your life aren't going well, the little things bother you more?Yet one tiny kind act that appears in the path may easily light up your whole life and give you hope again.
Like many people during the pandemic,my husband,Paul, had been laid off.I was still working, but my job would likely be ending soon too.I was worried about money,Covid-19 and our future. That's when our mailbox really started getting to me.
The mailbox, relic from the previous homeowners, had already been in rough shape when we moved in.The paint was faded. The metal pole holding up the box was rusted(生銹的).It stood at the end of our long driveway, far enough away from our house.Every time I saw it,it just reminded me of all the problems in my life."I wish we had a better mailbox,"I found myself thinking as I pulled out of the driveway.I probably would have forgotten all about it if it were not for the news we got one morning.
"Shelly just texted,"Paul said.Shelly was a neighbor and a good friend."A girl drove her car right into the mailbox.Completely mowed(撂倒)it down."I sighed, heart almost falling apart. "Shelly saw it happen. The driver, just a teenager, wasn't hurt, but she was really upset,"Paul added.
As much as I wanted a new mailbox, getting it would be expensive."That certainly wasn't in the budget,"I thought.I guess it's true what they say:Be careful what you wish for.
I went to work in low spirits. While doing the usual tasks,I received a text from Shelly again,"That teenage girl named Audree came by and repaired your mailbox."
注意:
1.續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右;
