34.John Smith is an exchange student from New York. Here is a letter to his friend in his hometown.
Dear David,
How time flies! It's been 3 months since I came to China.I'm having a great time on my student exchange program here.So far,I've completely got used to the life here and have known a lot about traditional Chinese culture.I'd like to share some with you.
In China ,there are many different kinds of traditional art forms ,such as paper cutting,Chinese clay art and so on.Among them ,the kite interests me most. The first ancient Chinese kite appeared more than 2000 years ago. Then flying kites was spread into Japan,Korea (韓國)and Malaysia (馬來西亞)during the Tang Dynasty(唐朝) and the Song Dynasty (宋朝).Kites are regarded as (被認(rèn)為)the earliest craft(飛行器).They played an important role in the process of inventing the plane.
Tea culture is important in China.Tea was discovered as a kind of drink by accident about 5000 years ago.It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. It didn't appear in England until around 1660.The tea trade from China to western countries took place in the 19th century. Now tea has become one of the most popular drinks around the world.
Lastly ,I'd like to tell you something about one of the traditional Chinese festivals- the Mid - Autumn Festival. It is on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar(陰歷).Chinese have been celebrating the Mid - Autumn Festival and enjoying mooncakes for centuries.
If you'd like to know more about traditional Chinese culture,I will talk about it in the next letter.
Best wishes!
Yours
John

35.Do you believe that only boys do well in science?Does it seem to you that girls have better language skills than boys?In your opinion ,are boys better at building things? If your answer to each of those questions is Yes," you are right ,according to an article in Current Science. There are exceptions ,but here are the facts.
Usually ,boys score higher on tests about math, while girls do better in tests about words ,spelling and memory. But these differences may not always be true.In the future ,a person's abilities may not be decided by sex.As one scientist says, " Nothing is impossible for a person to be or do."
A recent study by Jerome Kagan ,a scientist at Harward University is studying the watching ability of children 10 months old.Baby boys and baby girls are watching a" show" while seated on their mothers' knees. In Act One of the show,an orange - colored ball is lifted from a blue box and moved slowly. Then it is returned to the box. This is repeated six times.Act Six is almost the same ,except that the orange ball is smaller.
Baby boys do not seems to notice the difference in the size of the ball ,but girls immediately become excited and begin to make noises that sound like language.
It's also known that baby girls usually talk at an earlier age than baby boys do.Scientists believe that the left side of the brain develops faster in girls than in boys.As a result ,by the time they start to school ,little girls have an advantage that boys don't have, but what have the boys been doing in the year before starting school? They have been developing something called aggression. An aggressive person feels strong and independent (獨(dú)立的).He is often the first one to start a fight. It is said that aggression is caused by hormones(荷爾蒙).Scientists believe that hormones are not the only cause. They say aggression in boys is also caused by mothers.
