  • 2.US researchers have released (發(fā)布)a new study showing that keeping a straight back can help you get ahead of the competition in the office or at a job interview.
Professor Adam Galinsky who led the study claimed the research could be vital to people seeking jobs in a tough market. "With 1.9 million new jobs this year, our research suggests that your postures may be quite the way to let you run ahead of other applicants in a job interview.Standing straight is going to make you perform probably better in the interview because you'll say things with more confidence. It will also allow a person to think and act more powerfully," said Galinsky.
In the paper Powerful Postures Versus Powerful Roles,Mr.Galinsky described positions that help us feel more in charge as M expansive postures'1 that open up the body and take up more space. They include sitting with legs slightly apart or with an arm over the back of a chair. As they are not always appropriate for an interview,Mr.Galinsky suggests sitting upright, expanding your chest and holding your arms in a relaxed and comfortable position.
The experiment studied a group of 77 students who were asked questions while sitting with different positions. Some were told they were bosses and others played underlings. The people who sat with an expansive posture answered questions in a way that suggested they were more powerful. In comparison, the answers from those who sat hunched(縮頭弓身的) appeared to suggest they had lower self-esteem.What surprised the researchers was that the results were irrelevant(不相干的) to whether the participant held a higher rank. Those who sat in expansive postures chose to lead more often than those who sat hunched.

(1)What's the second paragraph mainly about?

A.The methods of finding a job.
    B.The importance of the research.
    C.The advantages of standing straight.
D.The present situation of the job market.
    (2)The experiment suggests that
    .
A.postures are more likely to have an influence on behavior than the title or rank
B.the research results are within the expectation of Mr.Galinsky
C.people with expansive postures have lower self-esteem
D.people who sat hunched are more powerful
(3)What's the main purpose of the passage?

A.To advise people to pay attention to their postures.
B.To introduce the content of Mr.Galinsky's paper.
C.To discuss the relations between postures and roles.
D.To provide information on "expansive postures".
(4)Which of the following words can replace the underlined word in the last paragraph?

    A.Leaders.
    B.Colleagues.
    C.Friends.
    D.Assistants.

  • 3.Amy Cuddy,a Harvard psychologist, has devoted her studies to the influence body language has on your confidence...,and finally, success. Her biggest findings center on the powerful effects of positive body language.Positive body language includes things like proper eye contact, active listening, and gestures that show the message you're trying to express.Studies show that people who use positive body language are more likable(討人喜歡的),persuasive, and emotionally intelligent. Here's how it works:
Positive body language changes your attitude.Cuddy found that consciously(有意識地) changing your body language to make it more positive improves your attitude because it has a powerful influence on your body.
It makes you more likable. In a Tufts University study, people watched soundless videos of doctors interacting with their patients.Just by observing the doctors' body language, people were able to guess which doctors ended up getting complained by their patients.Body language plays a big role in how you're viewed and can be more important than your voice or even what you say.Learning to use positive body language will make people like you and trust you more.
It improves your emotional intelligence.Your ability to effectively communicate your emotions and ideas is central to your emotional intelligence.People whose body language is negative have a destructive effect on those around them.Working to improve your body language has a great effect on your emotional intelligence.
We often think of body language as the result of our attitude or how we feel. This is true, but psychologists have also shown that the opposite is true:changing your body language changes your attitude.
Have you felt the influence from changing your body language? Please click the link below to turn to the comments page and share your thoughts there,so I can learn just as much from you as you do from me.

  • 9.I stood with my friends in a line.My heart was hammering like anything,my hands cold and wet,my head buzzing with excitement and nervousness at the same time.I earnestly listened to the names of the house captains(社長) being announced, but in my heart,I wanted it to end because then the head girl would be announced.I so wanted it to be me.
I had made countless posters, badges and bracelets for the campaigning.Instead of having lunch during the lunch time,I had gone from person to person, asking them to vote for me.I had shouted at the top of my lungs the slogan, "East or West,Maryam is the best!Vote for her and your year will be best."
I had tried my hardest to convince people to vote for me,now all I had left was hope.
"Guess who the head girl for the year is?" teased the announcer.
A heavy silence fell, one that was full of hope and expectation,of fear and of nervousness.
The announcer teased for a minute or two before finally announcing the name of the head girl.
I felt confused as my friends pushed me out of the line.As I looked at the huge crowd clapping for me,I could not believe that I was the head girl of the school. The head of the council body. The student that was respected and liked by everybody.
From then on,I enjoyed the respect I got in and out of school. At home,my family members praised me and at school everyone looked up to me.They thought I was an inspiration as well as someone they could get motivated by.I had power.I could talk to the school principal and convince her to do anything.I could order around other council members and ask them to do anything.
But as days passed,I realized that with power comes responsibility.
