1.Some Phrases That Defined 2020 For the first time since 2004,when Oxford Languages, the publisher of the O.E.D.,started choosing a Word of the Year 2020,it declined to pick just one.We couldn't pick one, either. But here are some words and phrases that we think capture what it felt like to be alive in 2020.
Blursday
The passage of time itself became seemingly unreliable this year,as some days felt like a week while some months flew by in an instant. Our friends even launched a newsletter called "What Day Is It?"
Remote learning
Farah Miller,an editor, shares her family's experience with remote learning this year. "Schools shuttered without a plan for how to teach homebound kids.My preschooler was given five worksheets and a list of activities she couldn't possibly do on her own.Or are they really remotely learning? That was the question Ⅰ,along with parents across the US,found myself asking in the spring."
Social distancing
As experts learned more about the spread of the virus, "6 feet" became the golden number;the distance we should stay away from others to prevent the spread of COVID-19,yes,but also a shorthand for how to navigate socialization in the new world.
Zoom
Up until around March of this year,Zoom was unknown to the public. Then the home became the office for millions of Americans, and our social lives moved entirely online.Almost overnight Zoom emerged as the go-to platform for private citizens, religious services and universities. "We Live in Zoom Now," The Times even declared.

2.In the first days of my honeymoon,I travelled to Vasto,a small town with its beautiful landscape in central Italy,to retrace the same steps my great-grandmother Filomena walked after her own wedding, almost 100 years earlier.
Vasto wasn't on my radar in the early stages of planning my honeymoon, but when learning that it wasn't far from the month-long route,I considered a visit. How could I be so close and not see where Filomena came from?Anyway,I'd been so busy planning my own wedding that I didn't have much time to think about what it meant to be married. As I was trying to figure out what a new family might look like,it also made sense to turn to the past.
The story of my family I knew started when Filomena set foot in New York by ship in 1922.But after I travelled to Vasto where she grew up,the starting point of her story shifted.I began to consider Filomena as a young, adventurous woman planning a new life far from home. Her husband,Domenico, had already gone ahead to work there. She had no other family in the US,and yet she was prepared to get on a boat in Naples and sail into the unknown. Her willingness to see what could remind me of marriage:you don't have to know what's coming next, you just need to want to go.
Then we visited the edge of a valley near Filomena's house. In 1956,part of the world Filomena grew up in almost disappeared during a landslide. When she returned for visits later in life, she saw a landscape different from what she had remembered.Even the things we expect to be permanent aren't always so.
A few days spent walking in Filomena's footsteps, knowing all the unexpected turns that life threw at her over five decades of marriage,I realized that you can never plan for life's uncertainties or crave an outline for the future. If that kind of anxiety somehow creeps back in,I'll think of Filomena on the deck of a steam ship, uncertain, but moving forward anyway.

It was just before 8 am,October 17.Pam Bales stepped onto the snow-covered Jewell Trail(小路).She planned a six-hour climbing hike through New Hampshire's Mount Washington State Park. She had packed for almost every accident, including clothes, heat packs,a bottle of hot chocolate…And she intended to walk alone.A piece of paper on the dashboard of her car detailed her trip:start up Jewell Trail and return to her car before some forecasted bad weather arrives.Pam always left her hiking plans in her car.She was a volunteer on the Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team.
At 10:30 am,the weather was showing its teeth.Pam added even more clothes to protect herself from the cold winds and fog. Then she noticed something:a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her. She'd been following faint tracks all day and hadn't given them much thought, because so many people climbed Jewell Trail. But these, she realised, had been made by a pair of trainers.
By 11 am,Pam was getting cold, despite moving fast. She put on an extra top.Good thing I packed heavy, she thought. She decided to abandon her plan.Returning to her car was a requirement.Strong gusts of wind attacked her back and left side and the only thing keeping her on Gulfside Trail was the tracks in the snow.As she fought the wind and heavy sleet, her eyes searching for some type of shelter, the tracks made a hard left-hand turn off the trail.
All of a sudden, she felt alarmed. She was sure the hiker could lose their way and was heading straight toward the challenging trails of the Great Gulf.Pam followed the tracks carefully. She rounded a corner and saw a man sitting motionless beside a stone. He stared in the direction of Great Gulf. She approached him.His head was bare.He looked soaking wet.Thick frost covered his jacket. As his eyes tracked her slowly,he barely turned his head.
第一段首句:Her searching now turned into rescuing the man.----------------
第二段首句:They had to get out of there.------------------------組卷:2引用:1難度:0.2
