  • 1.Teens who are changing the world
Teenagers are,in fact, solving the problems of today with groundbreaking inventions.
    KeianaCavé,U.S.A.
The largest oil slick (浮油) caused by the oil overflow occurring in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 led to baby dolphins dying at six times the usual rate.
Watching the news on TV,Cavé felt that there must be some hidden environmental damage.Aged just 15,she began studying what happens to oil when it's left on the ocean's surface. The teenager discovered that when it's hit by UV rays from the sun,oil reacts to form chemicals which cause cancer.
Cavé has turned her work into two patents for methods of detecting(發(fā)現(xiàn))the dangerous chemicals.
    Wang Sunming and Li Jingpeng,China
Realizing the extent to which bacteria spread on public door handles,Wang and Li sought a material—titanium oxide (鈦白粉) —that could adequately kill bacteria. However, the chemical isn't very effective unless exposed to UV rays.Since most door handles are inside buildings—beyond the reach of UV rays from the sun,Wang and Li turned to LED lights and created a LED door handle. When a person touches the handle, the UV light switches on,activating (使活躍) the titanium oxide on it and instantly killing 99.8 percent of the bacteria that might otherwise have been spread.
    Julian Rios Cantu,Mexico
This inventor was just 13 years old when his mother was diagnosed (診斷) with breast cancer. He watched in horror as the tumor (腫瘤) grew from the size of a green bean to the size of a golf ball.
After his mother recovered,Cantu set out to protect others from the disease. He developed a wearable device that may be able to detect the early signs of breast cancer. If the project succeeds,it can save millions of lives.

  • 2.I can proudly say that last year I broke the record for the oldest person in the world to ride a roller coaster.I'm 105,but I feel younger.Even the doctor agrees I'm in good condition.I'm a bit deaf and my legs feel weak, but they are the only issue.
I rode the Twistosaurus at Flamingo Land, which spins you round quite fast.I didn't choose to go on that.I'd have preferred a really fast one that went upside down. But I was told I couldn't ride something like that, because it would affect my blood pressure and I might have some danger.
I wasn't nervous—I don't get frightened of anything.I was securely fastened,so I knew I wouldn't fall out!The roller coaster ride went on for three or four minutes, and it couldn't be a better experience. And I raised a lot of money for the Derbyshire,Leicestershire &Rutland Air Ambulance fund, which was fantastic.
People were saying I'd got a place in the Guinness World Records.Later, someone came to present me with the certificate.I had it on the wall in my living room, with another one I got a year earlier.
My record-breaking ways really began a couple of years ago, with the ice bucket challenge. It turned out that I was probably the oldest person in the world to do it,and the video was very popular. After that,I started to think about what else I could do to raise money for different charities.
I'm not sure if anyone admires all the fun I'm having. They just say I'm daft and that's about it.But I've had many good days and many exciting times.I've had a really good life.I don't think I've wasted any of it.

(1)Why didn't the author choose to go on riding the Twistosaurus?

A.Because he was told not to do so.
B.Because he considered it too gentle.
C.Because he thought it spun too fast.
D.Because he was in a bad physical condition.
(2)How did the author most probably react while riding the roller coaster?

    A.He really enjoyed himself.
B.He was very worried at first.
C.He couldn't think much about it.
D.He got frightened as it started moving.
(3)What do you know about the author from Paragraph 4?

A.He was eager to get certificates.
B.He disliked showing off his success.
C.He was the oldest person in the world.
D.He set a record the year before last year.
(4)What does the underlined word "daft" in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A.Healthy.
    B.Crazy.
    C.Strong.
    D.Funny.

  • 3.The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is gaining global popularity.TCM has been introduced in 183 countries and regions around the world.Westerners' understanding of TCM,however, may be limited to acupuncture, cupping and massage (針灸、拔罐和按摩).For instance, the purple,injury-like marks left on U.S.swimmer Michael Phelps' back from cupping for the purpose of relaxing his muscles and reducing pain became the center of attention during the Rio Olympics in 2016.
As a matter of fact,Chinese herbs (藥草) play a more important role in getting rid of diseases and keeping the body in good condition in the TCM treatment system than physical treatment. It is therefore upsetting to know that while 103 WHO member countries have given approval to the practice of acupuncture, not many recognize Chinese herbal medicine.TCM falls far behind Western medicine owing partly to the slow development of Chinese herbs.
Herbs are made into pills, power and soup.Compared with Western medicine, which has standardized drug production processes and treatment methods,TCM lacks standardization, and the chemical composition and functions of its medicines is unclear and their effects are unsteady.Fortunately, standardization has improved in recent decades, with an increasing number of factories producing patented TCM drugs.
Another factor that has prevented the development of TCM prescription drugs is the lack of creativity. While Western medicine-making companies come up with new products every year,TCM drug producers tend to make medicines according to prescription handed down from the past.Chinese chemist Tu Youyou's winning the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or medicine for her research into malaria (瘧疾) treatment may drive creativity to some extent in China's TCM industry. However, the current state of affairs cannot be changed within a short time.

(1)Why does the author mentioned the example of Michael Phelps?

A.Because he was injured in his swimming.
B.Because westerners know a little about TCM.
C.Because cupping is a kind of important TCM treatment.
D.Because westerners attached great importance to TCM.
(2)Why don't some member countries of WHO recognize Chinese herbal medicine?

A.Because Chinese herbs can get rid of diseases.
B.Because Western medicine is more effective.
C.Because they only approve the practice of acupuncture.
D.Because medicine made out of Chinese herbs develops slowly.
(3)Compared with Western medicine, what is the weak point of TCM in Paragraph 3?

    A.The methods of planting herbs.
    B.Its stable functions.
    C.Lacking in standardization.
    D.The effectiveness of prescription.
(4)The lack of creativity in TCM refers to the fact that
    .
A.Prescription are got from the past
    B.Western companies are more experienced
    C.Medicine-making companies lack creativity
    D.Medicine-making companies lack driving force
