  • 1.BEIJING-Seven prestigious universities in China announced Sunday that they would begin using the same independent exam -besides the national one -to test students hoping to gain entrance to them in 2011.
The seven are Peking University,Beihang University,Beijing Normal University,Nankai University,F(xiàn)udan University,Xiamen University and Hong Kong University.
Students who want to gain entrance to any of the seven universities will only have to sit one independent exam, according to the joint announcement.
"This will help lighten the students' load, otherwise they must take several exams for different universities,"said the announcement.
Passing the exam could result in more than one interview chance, giving the students more opportunities to choose their favorite universities.
China' s college entrance exam system is undergoing reform as universities aim to select students based on independent criteria rather than just using the results of the national exam.
In 2003,Peking University and another 21 universities were allowed to pilot (試用) the reform by using their own criteria to independently select five percent of their students.
Now nearly 80 universities across the country have the right to select talented students based on their own exams.
Education experts regard universities selecting students according to independent examinations as conducive (有助的) to better understanding where the students' talents lie.
Although this may be the case,it has also created problems as students may sit many different exams as they often apply for a number of universities.
To relieve students from such pressures, the national education outline (2010-2020)released in July this year encourages high-level universities to group together to use the same exams.

Ben says the success of the band' s music video is a credit to the talent and ability of the musicians, but it's also a sign of the times.
"It really comes down to seeing something different, seeing something unique, and I think that that' s always,in any type of art form, what will speak to people, and I think it does reflect the times that we live in,taking a smart phone and then being able to turn it into an instrument, not only just an instrument, but making it sound really good."

  • 3.In one of the strongest indications of the power of the mind to influence the body,a growing collection of evidence finds that people who are depressed have a greatly higher risk of developing heart disease.
In a study of almost 3,000 men and 5,000 women, depressed men were 70 percent more likely to develop coronary (心臟的) heart disease than those who weren't depressed. While depressed women were just 12 percent more likely to develop heart disease, those who were severely depressed were 78 percent more likely. In fact,a 1998 study found that women who are depressed have a risk of dying from heart disease equal to that of women who smoke or who have high blood pressure.
The link works the other way around, too:While about 1 in 20 American adults experience major depression in a given year, that number jumps to about one in three among those who have survived a heart attack.
The more severe the depression, the more dangerous it is to your health. But some studies suggest that even mild depression, including feelings of hopelessness experienced over many years, may damage the heart.Other studies suggest depression may affect how well heart disease medications work.
Researchers are n' t sure what the connection between depression and heart disease is,but theories exist. One is that people who are depressed tend not to take very good care of themselves. They' re more likely to eat high-fat,high-calorie "comfort" foods, less likely to exercise, and more likely to smoke. But beyond lifestyle, there is probably also a physiological link between depression and heart disease.Recent studies found that people with severe depression tended to have a lack of heart-healthy 0-3 fatty acids.People who are depressed also often have high levels of stress hormones (荷爾蒙).These keep the body primed for fight or flight, raising blood pressure and causing the heart to beat faster, all of which put additional stress on coronary arteries (動(dòng)脈) and prevent the body' s natural healing mechanisms from working properly.
A whole branch of medicine is devoted to the complex links between mental health, the nervous system, the hormone system and so on.This science is gradually sorting out how the mind-body connection affects us,or defenses against heart disease.
Generally,an estimated 10 percent of American adults experience some form of depression every year.Although available treatments can ease symptoms (癥狀) in more than 80 percent of people treated, less than half of those with depression get the help they need.

(1)Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

    A.Depression-Heart Disease Risk Factor.
    B.Heart Disease-Health Killer.
    C.Depression-Mental Health Enemy.
    D.Heart Disease-Depression Factor.
(2)Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?

A.With high blood pressure, depression is another potential risk to women's health.
B.Depression, which is mild, can possibly cause damage to your health.
C.Most people who experience depression get treated as they should be.
D.Depression may have some influence on the function of heart disease medication.
(3)According to the passage, the possible connections between heart disease and depression are the following EXCEPT

A.depressed ones tend to eat high-fat and high-calories foods, which leads to physical damage to heart
B.severe heart disease may cause people to feel hopeless and depressed
C.depression may result in the lack of some kind of acids, which probably affects the working of people' s heart
D.people with depression often have a high level of stress hormones, maybe, which will put extra pressure on one's heart

  • 4.Yi So-yeon,an engineer from Seoul, returned to Earth on Saturday after 11 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS),along with Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and US astronaut Peggy Whitson.
A technical problem turned a routine (常規(guī)) return to Earth into a sharper than usual descent (下降) that tested the group members' stamina and courage. They landed in the Kazakh steppes(大草原) about 420km (260 miles) wide of their target.
"During the descent there was some kind of fire outside the Soyuz capsule because we were going through the atmosphere," Yi said.
"At first I was afraid, but the two other guys looked okay,so I tried to look okay too."
Yi smiled and joked her way through a 10-minute news briefing at Star City, the wooded Sovietera cosmonaut training centre on the edge of Moscow. However,Malenchenko and Whitson looked tired and thin after nearly six months in space.Their answers were short and Whitson needed support to balance when she walked. The 29-year-old Yi has become famous in South Korea since the take-off but she brushed this aside and said she has had little contact with friends or family since returning.
"In fact, they are the heroes right now," Yi said, referring to Malenchenko and Whitson. "I'm just a beginner and a little ashamed to say that I am a hero." She did, though, relate a more light-hearted incident on the ISS.
"I sang 'Fly Me to the Moon" Yi said about the 1950s pop song. "It's my favorite song from university although at that time I didn't know I would be an astronaut."
The capsule's so-called "ballistic" re-entering made the group members face twice the usual pull from the centre of the earth. The flames Yi described may have been caused by friction (摩擦) heating the capsule as it fell through the atmosphere.
Whitson told reporters that Saturday's ballistic landing, was irregular but not an emergency.
"The Soyuz has been through its history very reliable and there has obviously been some issue in the last couple of descents which went ballistic, but I'm sure the engineers will determine what the problems are and get them fixed," she said.
In October,a Soyuz capsule carrying Malaysia's first space tourist touched down about 200 km (125 miles) off course in a similar ballistic landing caused by a technical problem.
The Soyuz is the world's longest-serving manned space capsule. An early version of the craft, the Vostok, carried the first person into space in 1961.
Whitson,48,has become the American with the longest amount of time in space with 377 days.

A.a(chǎn) fire was caused by the friction
B.she had no such experience before
    C.she was not brave enough
D.the other two didn't help her
(3)From the passage,we can learn that

A.Yi So-yeon,a space tourist came from South Korea
B.Whitson became energetic when they landed on earth
C.the two other guys were not afraid during the descent
    D.the Soyuz,an unmanned space capsule,had a long history

    B.out of control
