The Great Pacific Garbage Patch In the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii, millions of tons of garbage swirl(打旋) slowly in the water. The remains of bottles, plastic bags, fishing nets, and other items float gently around. This is the Pacific Garbage Patch, and it's a huge problem. The Pacific Garbage Patch is in a part of the ocean where water moves endlessly in a circle.Trash from thousands of miles away is pulled by ocean currents(洋流) until it travels to this spot.
Most of the garbage is plastic. This is because plastic doesn't break down easily. It can only break down into small pieces. These small pieces look like food to fish, birds, and other animals. When these animals eat the plastic instead of filling up on real food, they can become sick and starve to death.
Scientists worry that this ocean garbage will hurt more than just marine life(海洋生物).Eventually, sick animals can make their way into the human food supply. But right now, nobody is sure how to solve the problem. One thing that does work, though,is to recycle plastic or throw them away properly.Remember,if your soda bottle doesn't become litter in the first place,it won't get into the ocean.
(1)What is the passage mostly about?
    .
    A.Plastic in the ocean
    B.How plastic breaks down

A.The plastic is all coming from Hawaii.
B.The plastic makes it difficult to swim.
C.The plastic could eventually hurt people.
D.The plastic makes the ocean ugly.
(4)Why do marine animals mistake plastic for food?

    A.Plastic provides animals with energy.
B.Plastic carries pieces of food with it.
C.Plastic smells like food to the animals.
D.Plastic breaks down into small pieces.
(5)In which way,a soda bottle will NOT get into the ocean?

Wacky or Wise? My dad and I found a great web site that describes wacky(古怪的) inventions. Some of them impressed us,but others made us ask,"What was that inventor thinking?"
One of Dad's favourite inventions was the alarm fork. It's supposed to help people eat more slowly. The alarm fork looks like a regular fork except it has two lights on the handle that work like a traffic signal. When the fork's green light is lit,you can take a bite of your food. When the red light flashes, you stop eating and wait. That would drive me crazy!
Another invention was a pair of eyeglasses without earpieces. They looked ridiculous! To wear them, you first glue a magnet onto each side of your head near your eyes. The frame for the glasses has two ends with metal pieces that the magnets attract. But I wonder what happens when you take off your glasses. Will your head stick to the fridge?
There's also a travelling washing machine that washes clothes while you drive.Dad and I think the machine is a good idea, but it seems like too much trouble to use.First, you have to lift your car so you can fasten the machine onto one of the car's wheels. Then you add water, soap, and clothes and hit the road. But you can't drive over 25 miles an hour(40km per hour),or the machine will break. And you have to stop twice.First, you need to replace the dirty water with clean water for rinsing. And then you have to empty the rinse water so the clothes can spin dry.Washing clothes with rocks in a creek(小溪) seems easier to me!
(1)What is the alarm fork designed to do?

    A.Help people eat more quickly.
    B.Help people eat more slowly.
C.Help people choose what to eat.
    D.Help people stir their food.
(2)How do the eyeglasses work without earpieces?

A.They have magnets that attract to metal pieces on the glasses frame.
B.They use suction(吸力) cups to stay on your face.
C.They clip onto your nose like a clothespin(衣夾).
D.They have built-in adhesive strips(粘合條) that stick to your skin.
(3)What is the drawback of using the travelling washing machine?

A.It is too heavy to carry.
B.It only works on certain types of clothing.
C.It cannot be driven over 25 miles an hour.
D.It requires a lot of electricity to run.
