  • 2.    Charvi Goyal is a high school student from Dallas,Texas, who helps out other classmates by tutoring them between classes.
When Goyal's high school moved online last spring because of COVID-19,she decided to also take her teaching online. The 17-year-old junior and three of her fellow students created TutorScope,a program that offers free tutoring services to other children, including younger ones.It started with a small number of tutors who helped young people in their city. But it has grown into a group of 22 tutors from Texas,Arizona and Ohio. They have helped more than 300 students, some from as far away as South Korea.

"With these tutors,I realize they have time," she said. "I think they are very patient with these younger kids.I have patience with other things, but I don't have patience to teach."

  • 3.When Alok and I met in 1984,he was attracted by my passionate love of children, dogs, and poetry.I was drawn to his intelligence and his broad, comforting shoulders. Our marriage was very happy, and our sons,Viraj,an accountant, and Anurag,a lawyer, were warm, loving, and blessed with both a high level of integrity(正直)and a wicked sense of humour. It was as if I had everything I had wished for. When people said, "Life is not perfect," I used to think, "Oh,but it very nearly is."
But one Saturday night everything became different.Alok and I were about to leave our flat in Delhi for a party when all of a sudden he just passed away.It was a fatal cerebral stroke (腦中風) without warning.
I was terrified, but felt I owed it to myself,to Alok, and to the boys to rise above the loss and use the strength our love had given me to go forward.I also had to deal with some pressing problems.Where would I live? Our home was a company-owned flat, and most of the facilities we'd enjoyed, like the club, medical coverage, and even the phone, came with his job.
I made the decision to try and do as much as I could on my own, without asking,or expecting, other people to help me.As a journalist,I had been privileged to share some truly exceptional life stories.I now had to handle my own life story, and accept change with as much courage as I could muster
The journey ahead needed new skills.I finally found the right job,and today I am working in corporate communications. My life now is very different from what it was earlier.I understand that we are all given an inner strength, and that we truly grow up,regardless of age, when we learn to stand alone.

  • 4.Are you at least 17 years old?Do you weigh more than 110 pounds?Do you consider yourself fairly healthy?
If you answered yes to all of these questions, you should be donating blood every two months. In my survey of my schoolmates,I found that only 50 percent of them have ever donated blood and that only 1 out of 13 of them donate regularly. The lack of blood donors is a serious problem that requires immediate action.
According to the American Red Cross Web pages,in the United States alone someone receives a blood transfusion once every three seconds.People who benefit from donations include cancer patients as well as babies. The need for blood never takes a vacation and neither should donors.
Let me tell you about Brooke,a three-year-old girl with cancer.Brooke has spent about half of her life in the hospital receiving treatments. Her treatment will require about 500 units of blood in total,of which only 250 units have been replaced. She still needs the other half of the total amount to continue her treatment. If she doesn't receive this blood, she will not live to start kindergarten.
Examples like Brooke's are becoming all too common these days, with only 1 in 20 Americans donating blood and this number keeps dropping each year. These facts are extremely worrying considering that nearly half of us here will need blood sometime in our lives.
You can now see the seriousness of the problem with the lack of blood donations.Fortunately,it is a problem that can be easily solved. Each and every one of you can be part of the solution. All you have to do is go to the nearest Red Cross and donate your blood.

(1)How does the author explain the problem mentioned in Paragraph 2?

    A.By answering questions.
    B.By making comparisons.
    C.By presenting research findings.
    D.By describing his own experiences.
(2)What can we learn from the American Red Cross Web pages?

    A.The suffering of patients.
    B.The strong need for blood.
C.The efforts of the Red Cross.
    D.The benefits of taking vacations.
    (3)The three-year-old girl Brooke
    .
A.doesn't get fair treatment in the hospital
B.will need another 250 units of blood
C.stays alive by receiving blood daily
    D.can't wait to start kindergarten
(4)What is the purpose of the text?

A.To persuade people to donate blood.
B.To present some new medical results.
C.To call on people to save a little girl.
D.To explain the risks of blood donation.

  • 5.When we meet someone for the first time,we usually get an uncertain sense of what kind of person they are by the way they shake hands, talk,or walk.In the age of social networking, however, first impressions are sometimes made even before we actually meet someone in person - that is,by looking at their profile photos(頭像). (1)

In the study,a group of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania in the US used software to analyze the profile photos of 66,000 users of US social platform Twitter and 3,200 of their tweets. (2)
The researchers wanted to find out if there was a relation between a person's profile photo and personality.
According to the results, open people are more likely to pose in an unusual way and use objects such as glasses or a guitar in their profile photo because they enjoy new and exciting experiences.Meanwhile, sensitive people often hide their negative emotions. (3)
Instead, they use an image of something like a pet,a car or a building. That's because sensitive people are strongly influenced by the strong social standard.
       (4)
For example, outgoing people are found to have the most colorful profile images,as they want to emphasize their personality and show themselves off,the researchers wrote.
Although social media photos "usually represent oneself, they also allow a user to shape his or her own personality," according to the researchers.(5)
    After all,first impressions always last.

A.They want to show themselves off.
B.They try to avoid showing their faces.
C.We should make our profile photos available to others.
D.Some users were asked to complete a survey about their personality types.
E.According to a recent study, these social images say a lot about our personality.
F.When choosing a profile photo,we should think about what image we'd like to convey.
G.The colors used in profile photos also give us some information about the photo's owner.

Holidays are not necessarily for fun or rest.Doing something meaningful can also gain special pleasure. When the final bell rang, the students were reminded that there was no school on Monday-the Labor Day. "Enjoy your extra day off," said the teacher to her class.
An extra day of fun suited Kayla just fine. She loved breaks. She wanted to go out to play with her friends. When the school bus dropped Kayla off,she ran into the house happily.
"How was school,Kayla?" asked her mom.
"It was great,Mom.I am excited about no school on Monday. "
"You just started back to school two weeks ago.Already in need of a break, huh?" asked Kayla's mom with a laugh.
Kayla slept in the next morning.Saturday was her favorite day of the week.It rained most of the day,so Kayla enjoyed playing video games inside. On Sunday, her friends came over and they played basketball for several hours.
Then it was Labor Day,you know, the extra day off that Kayla was so looking forward to.But Kayla was awakened early that morning by her dad.He told Kayla that in honor of Labor Day,the family would be cleaning both inside and outside the house.Kayla couldn't believe it.This was a holiday.A day when she was supposed to be enjoying freshly squeezed lemonade while playing in her tree house. As Kayla wiped her eyes, she began to wonder if this was just a bad dream.
"Kayla, your breakfast is ready. We have a lot of work to do today.Let's get a move on," said Kayla's mom.As she sat down at the kitchen table,Kayla asked her parents,"Are you serious about working today?Isn't Labor Day a holiday?"
"Yes,Kayla. It is," replied her dad. "But your mom and I thought working hard today would make you appreciate why Labor Day was observed in the first place."
        Paragraph1:
At first,Kayla felt disappointed at her parents' plan for the holiday._______
        Paragraph 2:
But things began to change as she was doing the chores._______
