  • 12.As an English teacher,I found that English slang (俚語) can be more difficult for those who learn English as a second language to understand. This became clear when I was talking to one of my students,Cathy,in Japan. "Excuse me,Miss White.I want to go to buy a notebook outside the school." "It's bucketing outside," I said.It is an English slang expression which means "it is raining".However, she didn't seem to understand what I said.
The point I'm trying to get across is that being puzzled about English slang in the beginning is perfectly natural because it is what makes the language special. But learning some slang is a fantastic way of understanding the culture of a country.English does have some interesting slang. Here is some of my favorite slang which is common in Northern Ireland.
To keel over:If someone keels over,it basically means that he/she has fallen over because he/she has passed out or died.
To be in bed with your head:This is used to describe someone who has gone to bed because he/she has a headache.
To upset the apple cart:This means that someone has caused trouble or upset someone's plans.
Dead on:This means "exactly right", "perfect",or shows that someone agrees with what you've said.
Slang can be difficult to learn but it's really impressive when you get it right!Slang also helps you sound friendly,so it's great for making friends. If you can use some of these English expressions in a conversation, people will be amazed!

(1)How did Cathy feel when the author said "It's bucketing outside"?

    A.She was unhappy.
    B.She was surprised.
    C.She was worried.
    D.She was puzzled.
(2)What does the author say about slang?

A.It tells us the history of a country.
B.It is created by language teachers.
C.It shows the culture of a country.
D.It is used to impress foreigners.
(3)If someone says "Does the word mean 'elevator'?",what could you say?

    A.I keel over.
    B.You're dead on.
    C.You upset the apple cart.
D.I'm in bed with my head.
(4)In which part of a newspaper can we read this text?

    A.Culture.
    B.Science.
    C.Travel.
    D.Lifestyle.

  • 13.Do you remember that story about the little girl who goes to visit her grandmother and meets a big,bad wolf along the way?Or perhaps you remember the story of the three little pigs who build three houses to protect themselves from a wolf?
The reality behind the fairy tales is that people feared wolves.Hunting and killing originating from hatred almost caused the animals to go extinct.Wolves needed a fairy mother — and that is what Brookfield Zoo in Chicago is for wolves and their puppies (幼崽).
Being a fairy mother to wolves is not easy.Brookfield Zoo replaced iron-barred cubicles (小隔間) with safe habitats, which are not merely appealing to the zoo visitor, but more importantly, are contributing to the normal behavior and reproduction of the animals. The wolves have a large area to run and play in,places to hide and sleep in,and hills to climb with lots of grass and trees around them.
A fairy mother's job is to make dreams magically come true and part of the magic is being invisible. The people who take care of the wolves hide themselves and the food and toys in places where the wolves can dig them up and find them on their own,so they feel more like they are living in nature.
Fairy tales are just stories.Wolves don't dress up as grandmothers, nor have they blown a house down.Wolves aren't scary at all,and in fact, they are more afraid of humans than we are of them.
The wolves have a great life at Brookfield Zoo.Maybe they will stay at Brookfield Zoo,but it would be nice to see them live back in nature again, too. If we all work together, maybe we can make  this fairy tale come true for the wolves.

(1)What are the two stories in the first paragraph used to show?

    A.Wolves are dangerous to humans.
    B.People's false impression of wolves.
C.The important role of Brookfield Zoo.

(2)Which word can best describe the area for wolves at Brookfield Zoo?

    A.Natural-looking.

    A.They are wolf researchers.
B.They are welcomed by the wolves.
C.They play hide-and-seek with the wolves.
D.They keep themselves out of the wolves' sight.
(4)What does "this fairy tale" in the last paragraph refer to?

    A.Living in the wild.
    B.Being taken good care of.
    C.Staying at Brookfield Zoo.
D.Not being afraid of humans any more.

  • 14.Is there a time when you are away from your hometown? When do you feel homesick the most? What do you often do to relieve your homesickness?
If the West has the apple, the East has the king of fruits:the enormously big mango.Called "aam" in Hindi,Urdu and Punjabi, this tropical fruit traces its origins to South Asia.Urdu and Hindi literature are filled with references to this fruit that once filled the kitchens and gardens of emperors.
Everyone is crazy about mangoes during the summer months in South Asia.City streets in India are lined with vendors (小販) selling all varieties of mangoes.Young and old bargain for better prices, mangoes can be sent as gifts, restaurants have special mango menu items and the fruit becomes a gesture of goodwill between India and Pakistan, with the choicest varieties sent across the border to celebrate each country's independence days.
South Asians all over the world expect the coming of mango season.South Asian stores receive shipments (運輸?shù)呢浳铮?of the fruit, though they are limited in quality and quantity. Each year,I taste my mangoes, though I'm saddened that popular varieties aren't easily available in Vancouver.
Mango memories take me back to the city I was born in:Rourkela in the eastern part of India. In late March, just as the days would start to become hot,I remember mango trees blooming (開花) with their fresh fragrance in the breeze as we biked to school.Come April, the trees would start bearing fruit.I remember the thrill of sneaking out (潛行,偷偷溜出) to collect raw mangoes, climbing onto the roof of our houses and eating them with pink salt and powdered red chilies (紅辣椒粉) alongside my best friend.
Mango stories from my childhood are endless. But this summer in Vancouver, tired from the pandemic(疫情),I can't help but remember my sweet mango memories.I realize that I need to wander the streets of my home country,to feel the intense heat of the summer months and soak in the country of my birth.
Instead,I am in a semi-lockdown state tasting mangoes, enjoying those I can find in Canada but missing the Indian varieties. This year, the enormously big mango has become a symbol of the sense of loss that each one of us is feeling.

(1)What do we know about the mangoes in South Asia?

A.They are often given as gifts in India.
B.They are a symbol of independence in India.
C.In Pakistan, they are mainly grown on the borders.
D.They are very popular among average people in India.
(2)Which of the following can replace the underlined word "thrill" in paragraph 5?

    A.Danger.
    B.Excitement.
    C.Anxiety.
    D.Sweat taste.
(3)Which of the following is correct information?

A.Vancouver has more varieties of mangoes than South Asia.
B.The author works on transporting mangoes between Canada and India.
C.The author is familiar with the growth stages of mangoes in Vancouver.
D.In the author's memory, mangoes blossom and bear fruit in March and April.
(4)What is the author's purpose in writing this article?

A.To illustrate why mangoes are popular in the East.
B.To provide proof for his experience in India and Canada.
C.To recall mango memories and express a longing to return home.
D.To analyze the negative impact of the pandemic on mango economy.
