Legend has it that the emu，together with the kangaroo，was chosen because neither is able to take a step backwards，indicating Australia's forward progression.It is not actually known whether emus can，in fact，walk backwards or not，but since they have never been observed to do so，they are an appropriate choice for the Australian emblem.
The emu is Australia's tallest native bird，reaching between 1.6 m and 1.9 m when standing upright.Adult emus are covered with thick greybrown feathers except for the neck and head，which are largely naked and bluish-black.The wings are greatly reduced，but the legs are long and powerful.One interesting fact about the emu is that each foot has only three forward facing toes and no hind toe.

.Emu farming has been tried for several decades but recently interest has been growing in this industry.A pair of emus may produce ten eggs a year under good captive conditions，which produces on average 5.5 chicks.At the end of 15 months，these would produce 4 square metres of leather，150 kg of meat，5.5 kg of feathers，and 2.7 litres of oil.Eggshells of infertile（未孵化的）eggs have been used for carving.
Emus are classified as a "least concern" species.Although they live in the wild only in Australia，their numbers are healthy and consistent there，and they have no pressing risk of endangerment.
