  • 523.Every year it is the same story.Santa Claus never makes it to the post office to pick up his letters. After Christmas, thousands of letters remain in the dead letter office. That's why,a month after Christmas two years ago,I asked the USA Postal Service to send me a few bags of Santa Claus' letters.
"My parents are behind in their bills and have no money for gifts," wrote Elizabeth, aged ten.Cindy, nine, wrote that her parents had big hearts but no money for presents."You are my only hope,Santa Claus," Calvin, also nine, explained how his mother couldn't afford gifts because she had to pay the rent and the bills. He asked for food and a winter coat.
If a reader sent me a self-addressed envelope,I promised I'd send him one of the kids' letters to answer.I received more than 7,000 requests, and I learned a lot about the depth of people's generosity(慷慨).Many readers said they'd send toys or clothing.
"A child's belief in Santa Claus is so short-lived," one reader wrote."If I can bring a little joy to a poor child, maybe his or her belief could last a little longer."
Every letter from a polite or poor child was sent to a reader to answer. But what about the others?
One of the strangest came from Candy, who wrote,"Santa Claus,I hate you—you're stupid!"
We can suppose that Santa Claus is a man of forgiveness and understanding. So were many readers. After I printed Candy's letter, one woman answered,"When I read Candy's words,my heart went out to jye.ai.Her letter was a cry of pain. That's why she wrote down her return address in her letter.I know how Candy might be feeling. When I was a child,I hardly received anything from Santa Claus.I tried to guess what was wrong with me because Santa Claus always passed my house and gave gifts to my friends. It got to the point where I hated Christmas.I'd like to write back to tell her that she is loved and ask why she is mad.May I?"

  • 525.If you see a group of people dancing and singing on the street or in the railway station, you don't need to feel surprised. They are a flash mob(快閃族),which is a group of people who come together suddenly in a public place,do something unusual for a brief period of time, and then quickly break up.They are usually organized with the help of the Internet or other digital communication network.
At a predetermined time, they gather and perform some distractions(消遣)such as waving their hands and exchanging books. Then, they quickly break up before the police can arrive.Using mobile phones the flash mob can change its location if the first one has been replaced for any reason.
Bill Lasik, senior editor of Harper's Magazine, organized the first flash mob in Manhattan in May 2003 and the first successful flash mob came together on June 3,2003--after the first attempt was foiled at Macy's department store.Lasik claimed that the activity was designed to make fun of hipsters(時髦的人),and call attention to the cultural atmosphere.
Flash mob gatherings can sometimes shock people.Such an activity might seem amusing and untrue, but it also might frighten people who are not aware of what is taking place.Undoubtedly, flash mobs can serve as good political tools in any direction. They also have great economic potential, such as using flash mobs to advertise a product.
The flash mob is now becoming more and more popular.People use it to do many things. For example,in 2009,Michael Jackson's fans took part in a flash mob to remember him.Hundreds of his fans gathered singing and dancing Michael's famous song Beat It together.Flash mobs give people from all walks of life an opportunity to come together to create a memory.

  • 530.Benefits of Reading The benefits of reading start with the first book a baby hears and continue into childhood and throughout the child's life. Here are some reasons why reading is important.
Reading teaches children about the world around them.(1)
They are exposed to ways of life, ideas and beliefs about the world which may be different from those which surround them. This builds a store of background knowledge, which helps younger children learn to read confidently.
       (2)
When we read, our brains translate the descriptions we read of people, places and things into pictures. When we are reading a story,we are also imagining how the characters are feeling. We use our own experiences to imagine how we would feel in the same situation.
Children who read do better at school. And they don't just do better at subjects like reading,English and history.(3)

Reading is a great form of entertainment!A paperback book or an e-reader doesn't take up much space so you can take it anywhere and you'll never be lonely or bored if you have a book in your bag.(4)

Reading relaxes the body and calms the mind.(5)
The constant movement, flashing lights and noise are quite stressful for our brains. When we read in silence, the black print on a white page is much less stressful for our eyes and brains.

    A.Reading improves concentration.
    B.Reading develops a child's imagination.
C.We seem to have forgotten how to relax and how to be silent.
D.Children learn new words and greatly enlarge their vocabulary.
E.They do better at all subjects and they do better all the day through school.
F.You can read while waiting for a friend or during a flight delay at an airport.
G.By reading, children learn about people, places and events outside their own experience.
