Experts are warning about the risks of extreme picky eating after a teenager living on a diet of chips and crisps developed lasting sight loss.Eye doctors in Bristol cared for the 17-year-old after his vision had gone to the point of blindness.Tests shows he had serious vitamin deficiencies(缺乏).Dr Denize Atan, who treated him at the hospital, said:"His diet was basically a portion of chips from the local fish and chip shop every day.He also used to snack on crisps and sometimes white bread and ham,and not really any fruit and vegetables."
The teenager had seen his doctor at the age of 14 because he had been feeling tired and unwell. At that time he suffered from vitamin B12 deficiency, but he did not stick with the treatment or improve his poor diet.Three years later,he was taken to the Bristol Eye Hospital because of progressive sight loss.
He was not overweight or underweight, but he had lost minerals from his bones, which was really quite shocking for a boy of his age.In terms of his sight loss,he met the standards of being blind. "He had blind spots right in the middle of his vision," said Dr Denize Atan. "That means he can't drive and would find it really arduous to read, watch TV or recognize faces."
Dr Denize Atan said that parents should learn about the harm that can be caused by picky eating, and turn to experts for help. For those who are concerned, she advised:"It's best not to be anxious about picky eating, and instead calmly introduce one or two new foods with every meal." She said multivitamin tablets can supplement a diet, but cannot take the place of eating healthily. "It's much better to take in vitamins through a varied and balanced diet," she said, adding that too many certain vitamins, including vitamin A,can be harmful, "so you don't want to overdo it."

  • 3.At some time in your life you may have a strong desire to do something strange or terrible. However, chances are that you don't act on your impulse (沖動(dòng)),but let it pass instead You know that to commit the action is wrong in some way and that other people will not accept your behavior.
One of the newest taboos in American society is the topic of fat.Unlike many other taboos, fat is a topic that Americans talk about constantly. It's not taboo to talk about fat;it's taboo to be fat.The "in" look is thin, not fat.In the work world, most companies prefer youthful-looking executives to sell their image as well as their products to the public. The thin look is associated with youth, vigor and success. The fat person,on the other hand,is thought of as lazy and lacking in energy,self-discipline and self-respect.In an image-conscious society like the US,thin is "in" but fat is "out".
It's not surprising that millions of Americans have become crazy about staying slim and "in shape".The pursuit of a youthful physical appearance is not, however, the only reason for America's fascination with diet and exercise.Recent research has shown the importance of diet and exercise for personal health. As in most technologically developed nations, the life style of North Americans has changed dramatically during the course of the last century.Modern machines do all the physical labor that people were once forced to do by hand.Cars and buses transport us quickly from point to point. As a result of inactivity, people's bodies can easily become weak and vulnerable (易受攻擊的)to disease. In an effort to avoid such a fate, millions of Americans are spending more of their time exercising.

    A.unacceptable in people's eyes
    B.popular with people
C.favorable impression left on other people
    D.a(chǎn) crime committed on impulse
(2)According to the text we can conclude in American society "being fat"

    A.hasn't long been a taboo
    B.will always remain a taboo
C.may no longer be a taboo some day
D.is not considered a taboo by most people
(3)In the US,thin is "in" but fat is "out" most probably mean

A.thin is "lazy" but fat is "kind"
B.thin is "old" but fat is "youthful"
C.thin is "unsuccessful" but fat is "successful"
D.thin is "popular" but fat is "unpopular"
(4)Why are so many Americans exercising more?

A.To keep strong and free from disease.
B.To find good jobs in the companies.
    C.To encourage their children.
    D.To avoid becoming old.
