The day had finally arrived.Skyler and Kenny waited expectantly by the door. When they heard the familiar "thump, thump" of their father's car as it turned off the street and into the driveway, the children ran outside, zipped (快速移動(dòng)) past their father and hurried into the back seat of the car.
They were greeted by a familiar furry face and a wagging tail. Both face and tail belonged to Daisy, their three-year-old German shepherd. In the seat beside her lay her harness (背帶).It was the symbol of Daisy and the children's hard work.If all had gone well this afternoon, the harness would become Daisy's work uniform,a sign to the world that she was a fully trained service dog.
Every day for eighteen long months,Skyler and Kenny had trained Daisy to work with the visually impaired:people with sight problems or blindness.First, they trained her to perform the tasks that every obedient dog should know.Daisy learned to sit,to walk on a leash (皮帶),and to settle patiently and wait. Those simple tasks came easily to their intelligent pup.
But the more challenging tasks took time and patience.Daisy learned to move carefully around objects like signposts and trash cans. She needed to keep well clear of them in order to guide her owner along a safe path.Daisy learned to stop at the edge of a staircase,or any other spot that required a step up or down.A professional service dog trainer helped with the most challenging tasks. He taught Daisy to ignore orders that might put her owner in danger.
Today, all of their hard work had come to a conclusion.Daisy had taken her service dog exam. But did she pass?Skyler and Kenny followed their father into the front hallway, with Daisy tagging close behind. They looked at their father expectantly.Their father gave a smile and a nod.The children ran off to tell their mother the news.

    Dear Alfred,
I want to tell you how important your help is to my life.
Growing up,I had people telling me I was too slow, though, with an IQ of 150+ at 17,I'm anything but stupid. The fact was that I was found to have ADHD(注意力缺陷多動(dòng)障礙).Anxious all the time,I was unable to keep focused for more than an hour at a time.
However, when something did interest me,I could become absorbed. In high school,I became curious about the computer, and built my first website. Moreover,I completed the senior course of Computer Basics, plus five relevant pre-college courses.
While I was exploring my curiosity,my disease got worse.I wanted to go to college after high school, but couldn't.So,I was killing my time at home until June 2012 when I discovered the online computer courses of your training center.
Since then,I have taken courses like Data Science and Advanced Mathematics.Currently,I'm learning your Probability course.I have hundreds of printer paper, covered in self-written notes from your video. This has given me a purpose.
Last year,I spent all my time looking for a job where, without dealing with the public,I could work alone, but still have a team to talk to.Luckily,I discovered the job-Data Analyst-this month and have been going full steam ahead.I want to prove that I can teach myself a respectful profession, without going to college, and be just as good as,if not better than,my competitors.
Thank you. You've given me hope that I can follow my heart. For the first time,I feel good about myself because I'm doing something, not because someone told me I was doing good.I feel whole.
This is why you're saving my life.
    Yours,
    Tanis

  • 2.I saw my first tree today.Dad used to tell me stories about the trees that still existed when he was a boy. There weren't very many even then, with the urbanization program in full swing.
The O'Brien home was one of the few examples of old-style wooden structures that hadn't been destroyed in Boston's urban-renewal campaign. The family had been able to avoid this because of its wealth and political influence, and the house was passed on through generations to the present.Old man O'Brien had no children,so when he died, the Urban Center bought it.Then an official discovered that the house had a backyard-in the yard was a live tree!
When the news of the tree's discovery leaked out, quite a few sightseers stopped by to have a look at it,and the local government, realizing the money-making potential, began charging admission and advertising the place.By now it had become a favorite spot for family trips like ours.
Dad paid the fee and we walked through a doorway hidden in a bookshelf and into the backyard.I just couldn't help noticing the tree!
It was located at one end of the yard, with a fence around it for protection. It was similar in form to the plastic trees I'd seen, but there was much more. You could see details more delicate than in any artificially made plant. And it was alive. But best of all was the smell-fresh,living smell, unfamiliar to the world outside with metal, plastic, and glass.I wanted to touch the bark, but the fence prevented me from doing so.
On the way back,I read through the brochures. One part said the O'Brien home would be torn down next year to make room for some insurance building, and the tree will have to go,too.
I just sat still, fingering the object in my pocket that I had picked in the O'Brien's backyard.I think it's called an acorn(橡子).

(1)Why could the tree in the O'Brien's backyard survive till today?

    A.It possessed some special characteristics.
B.It had a very strong fence around to protect it.
C.It was preserved together with the house by its owner.
D.It got the local government's attention as a tourist attraction.
(2)How might the author feel after the trip?

    A.Annoyed.
    B.Calm.
    C.Excited.
    D.Upset.
(3)Which statement best shows the theme of the passage?

A.Social progress and urbanization come at a cost.
B.Social progress should give way to nature protection.
C.Humans value nature protection over social progress.
D.Urbanization has more advantages than disadvantages.

  • 3.Besides Yun Xiaolin, the new team consists of three other women in their mid-20s — Yao Ziqing,Liu Dejie and Dong Ning. They have been given the name of "fire rose" to represent the fact they are the first such small group made up entirely of women in the past 20 years.
In recent years, the traditionally male-dominated funeral industry(殯葬業(yè)) has seen a growing number of young women taking up the profession.Their inborn female strengths such as caring natures have allowed them to be trusted by more customers dealing with tearful losses. Some customers only want female technical staff because they know how to operate the machine and also know when to hand over a tissue(紙巾).
In addition to a heavy workload, running a crematorium(火葬場) is far more than turning on and off a cremator(焚尸爐),Yun noted.A crematorium worker needs to shoulder a mass of responsibilities such as machine repair and environmentally friendly disposal of remains.
Unlike Yun,who said she chose the work due to her curiosity,Liu,another crematorium worker, ended up in the profession since her family work in the funeral industry. After graduating from university, she chose to work in a funeral parlor in North China's Tianjin Municipality.
While women's working in the industry is still considered by many as a social taboo(禁忌),the four all noted that this uncommon profession taught them how the unavoid ability of death can actually be a positive force that encourages people to value life. They have also noticed that there are fewer stereotypes about the funeral industry today, especially when it comes to the women workers.
Liu noted she has not encountered much prejudice(偏見) during her work.Instead, many people are surprised and express respect when hearing that Liu can handle tough work skillfully in her job,a profession that many people in China are afraid to come into contact with.
Along with their efforts is a changing social environment led by new directions and social institutions in the industry, which have encouraged more people to no longer be afraid of this profession.

(1)Why are female technical workers preferred by some customers?

A.Because they know how to dispose of remains.
B.Because they have better performance than males.
C.Because they want to work in this field as equally as men.
D.Because they can show warmth while being professional.
(2)Why has Liu taken up the funeral profession?

A.She considers it as a way of earning respect.
B.She aims to change people's views on taboos.
C.She wants to encourage people to love life.
D.She follows in the footsteps of her family members.
(3)What opinion do the four women share in terms of their profession?

    A.They are doing something meaningful.
B.They work in fields they are fit for.
C.They have more difficulty in facing death.
D.They are at a disadvantage in the funeral industry.
(4)What can be inferred from the fifth and sixth paragraphs?

A.Women are mainly employed in the funeral industry.
B.Women funeral workers have gained more acceptance.
C.Male-dominated professions serve the public better.
D.Women technical workers have more targeted client groups.
