In 2002,an Australian man went to his friend's 21st birthday party. He got drunk, fell off some steps and cut his lip.He took a picture of his injuries and shared it with his friends online. "And sorry about the focus," he wrote, "it was a selfie(自拍)." That was the first recorded use of the word "selfie",according to some experts at Oxford Dictionaries.
Oxford Dictionaries declared "selfie" Word of the Year for 2013,in honor of the term having taken over the world thanks to millions of smart phone selfportraits and the resulting shares on social media. In recent years, the act of taking a picture of oneself with a mobile phone, placing the subject centerstage, has won great popularity with everyone from Britain's Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ to US with former President Barack Obama joining in.
But the rise of selfie photography in some of the world's most beautiful, dangerous places has also inspired a lot of risktaking behavior, such as hanging from a tall building, standing in front of a rushing train and crossing a busy street.People who get addicted will never stop taking selfies, completely ignoring where they are.In fact, there have been several reports about people losing their lives while taking selfies.Several governments have now begun treating selfie as a serious threat to safety, warning visitors to pay attention to the dangers when taking selfies.
"Walt Disney World is also banning selfiesticks from its theme parks because selfiesticks have become a growing safety concern for our guests," Disney World spokeswoman Kim Prunty said.Under the new policy, guests will be checked for the equipment during the routine bag check that happens near the parks' entrances.

Scientists say a huge percentage of bird species are in danger because their habitats,or homelands, are disappearing.Traditional migration paths take birds through countries that are mot protecting locations to stop.rest and feed,The scientists studied the migration,or fight, paths,of almost 1.500 species. They decided that 91 percent of then passed through dangerous areas.
The major danger for migratory birds is development.Building and paving have covered over nature where birds stop and feed as they move from one part of the world to another,F(xiàn)or example,a bird called the bar- tailed godwit migrates from its breeding grounds in the Arctic. It flies all the way to the southern hemisphere in Australia and New Zealand,Along the way.the small binds stop at Yellow Sean mudflats in China.Korea .
One of the scientists working on the study Says"many of these critical sites have been lost to land reclamation(開墾)owing to urban, industrial and agricultural expansion." The problem, according to investigators,is that many of these small birds die along their migration because they don't have a safe place to eat and rest. There is no place to restore their energy for the next leg of their journey."They simply perish(死亡)along the way,"says one of the scientists Countries in North Africa,Central Asia and those along the coasts of East Asia are having the most difficult time conserving land ,The scientists say these countries do not have enough areas that are safe for birds.
The researchers say countries need to work together and provide safe stopover areas for birds that pass through their boundaries. For example, one country might have preserved safe zones for migrating birds. But a neighbor country might not.A bird might perish. One scientist tells the Los Angeles Times that while some habitats are changing, more work can be done to make urban areas safe for birds. He says small changes-like planting more native plants or keeping cats out of areas birds would be likely to use-could make a big difference.

With travel and the environment in the news so much lately, you've probably heard the word ecotourism. As travelers become more aware of their effect on the planet and want to do their part to make a difference, ecotourism has really taken off.
What is ecotourism? The definition isn't as hard to determine as you might think.According to the International Ecotourism Society,it is defined as "responsible travel to natural areas that protects the environment and sustains the well-being of the local people." To be simple,it's travel that has a positive effect on a destination's ecology and economy.
Ecotourism lets travelers participate in activities that benefit the environment. For example, travelers can act as citizen scientists in places around the world, including national parks and dive sites,to help do research and collect data.Meanwhile, ecotourism helps local communities to do well and become successful and strong. That can happen in a number of ways, involving some type of financial aspect, from providing jobs to supporting local businesses.
Being a responsible traveler, you'll have a much more satisfying and rewarding experience.Instead of simply visiting tourist attractions and eating at chain restaurants, you can get completely involved in a local culture and really get to know the people who live there. It enriches your own life and opens your mind to new ideas.
Ecotourism is an amazing way to discover the world.Nature is full of wonders everywhere.Being able to get out in a natural area that is protected and largely undeveloped offers a chance to connect with plants and animals you may never see anywhere else.Just be sure to leave it as you found it for future explorers to discover.Get your sneakers ready, pack your bags and head for nature.A big and beautiful world is waiting for you out there.______

Natural disasters are catastrophic events that often occur without warning and disrupt the ecosystem, causing damage to personal lives, property, transportation, and livelihood. The thought of a natural disaster can be frightening, but it is never possible for you to prevent it.Though you may not know what kind of disaster will strike or when, being ready for the disaster before it may help you protect yourself, your family and your home.
Creating and practicing a plan with your family to figure out what to do in the event of a disaster should be your priority.Make sure everyone knows their role and the plan - then have drills,so you're all comfortable with who does what.According to Ready.gov,the four primary factors that your plan should take into account include where to shelter a route for evacuation(疏散),getting emergency alerts and warnings, family communication.
Having an emergency preparedness kit(成套工具)on hand may help you and your family deal with a disaster.Stores supplies in a large water-resistant container near a door or in your garage so you can grab it and find shelter quickly.Supplies such as canned food, clean water, flashlights, medications, and clothing should be included in the kit. Many people also like to keep copies of important documents in the kit,so that they will be readily accessible as needed, and keeping some cash in it is also a good idea.As a general rule, there should be enough supplies in an emergency kit for you to get by for 72 hours without assistance.
You'll want your insurance policy numbers for your vehicle, home and any other relevant insurance you've purchased relating to things that might get damaged during a disaster,so it is a wise idea to take note of the numbers.Keep hard copies of your insurance information in your wallet,in your car and even at your office or a relative's home in case you're unable to fetch them from your own house but need to make a call.
