閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
I met Connie the day she was admitted to the hospice ward, where I worked as a volunteer. Her husband,Bill, stood nervously nearby as she was transferred from the gurney(輪床)to the hospital bed. Although Connie was in the final stages of her fight against cancer, she was cheerful and always smiled. We got her settled in and then asked if she needed anything.
"Oh, yes," she said, "would you please show me how to use the TV? I enjoy the soaps so much and I don't want to get behind on what's happening." Connie was a romantic. She loved soap operas, romance novels and movies with a good love story. As we became acquainted, she confided how frustrating it was to be married 32 years to a man who often called her "a silly woman."
"Oh, I know Bill loves me," she said, "but he has never been one to say he loves me, or send cards to me." She sighed and looked out the window at the trees in the courtyard. "I'd give anything if he'd say 'I love you,' but it's just not in his nature."
Bill visited Connie every day. In the beginning, he sat next to the bed while she watched the soaps. Later, when she began sleeping more, he paced up and down the hallway outside her room. Soon, when she no longer watched television and had fewer waking moments, I began spending more of my volunteer time with Bill.
He talked about having worked as a carpenter. He and Connie had no children, but they'd been enjoying retirement by traveling, until Connie got sick. Bill could not express his feelings about the fact that his wife was dying.
One day, over coffee in the cafeteria, I got him on the subject of women and how we need romance in our lives; how we love to get sentimental(柔情蜜意) cards and love letters.
"Do you tell Connie you love her?" I asked (knowing his answer), and he looked at me as if I was crazy.
"I don't have to," he said. "She knows I do!"
"I'm sure she knows," I said, reaching over and touching his hands rough, "but she needs to hear it, Bill."
We walked back to Connie's room. Later, I saw Bill sitting by the bed. He was holding Connie's hand as she slept. The date was February 12.
Two days later I walked down the hospice ward at noon. There stood Bill, leaning up against the wall in the hallway, staring at the floor. I already knew from the head nurse that Connie had died at 11 A.M..

  • 1.    Nature,while beautiful, could also be unpredictable and merciless. But most importantly we bear in mind that in the darkest times, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel, just like Mrs.Evans' cabin light.
One bright summer day,my friend Peter and I decided to take an adventure into the unexplored paths of the Great Smoky Mountains.Blessed with rich biodiversity and fascinating landscapes, the national park seemed a perfect getaway.Little did we know that our casual(隨意的) hike would soon turn into an unexpected personal incident, forever kept in our memories.
We set off early in the morning, equipped with our backpacks and a map that was supposed to guide us through the winding paths. The sun was up,casting long shadows on the forest floor as we set off on our journey. We trekked(艱難行走),laughed, and wondered at the beauty of nature around us.
As we trekked through the thick forests, taking in the natural wonders around us,we couldn't help but feel a sense of adventure coursing through our body. The path was rough and rocky, but we persisted(堅持) through the challenging landscape.
Midway through our exploration,we came upon a breathtaking waterfall, its shining waters pouring down the rocks in a quiet and peaceful melody. We sat down by the water's edge, taking a moment to get lost in the beauty of nature. The cool mist from the waterfall surrounded us,and we felt refreshed and energetic.
As the day went on,we trekked deeper into the wilderness, eager to explore every corner of this natural paradise. We were so absorbed in the beauty of nature that we just didn't notice our way and it seemed that we could not find the way back to the familiar part of the forest.
Frightened,we hurried to find our way back but the thick forests and winding paths only served to confuse us further. We tried to remember any possible signs that might lead us back.No sooner had we celebrated our return to the clear paths than something worse happened.

  • 2. One day a boy found a bird lying on the ground, squawking(叫喊) for help.Feeling sad for the bird, the boy petted it gently and wanted to help it,but he didn't know how since he was just 7 years old.So he took the bird in his hands, carried it carefully home and showed it to his parents. At once, his parents took action. They washed the bird and found it injured. With the help of his parents, the young boy dressed the wound. But it would need time and care for the bird to completely recover. As the bird had become dear to his heart, the boy immediately offered to care for the bird.
The boy named his new friend "Lucky".He began to feed the bird and he even ran out to collect grass to build a soft nest(鳥巢) for the bird. Then,he put the nest beside his bed.The boy and the bird were sleeping together and living together.Soon they became close friends. The boy always told it about his experiences in school and his secrets.Lucky,an extremely patient audience, usually responded to him with a few nods and chirps (嘰嘰喳喳聲).The boy's parents also loved Lucky. They regarded it as a family member.
In the course of time,Lucky gradually recovered and started to hop(腳跳) and jump a little bit and exercise its wings. That made everyone happier.Soon it would be able to fly.How wonderful!

But that would not happen. The boy loved his friend so much that he couldn't imagine parting with it.The boy wondered, "I should surely stay with Lucky forever. But how?Keep the windows closed all the time? That was not practical."

  • 3.    We were visiting our daughter when we adopted our Boston terrier,Tad.An adorable puppy, just three months old,he became the family's center of attention. Each morning,as soon as he heard my daughter Kayla moving around downstairs,he had to be taken down for playtime before she left for work. When she came home from work,we had him waiting for her at the door.
After three weeks we left for home.On the drive,we let Tad talk to Kayla on the phone each night.Once home, every time we called Kayla or she called us,we always put Tad on.He scratched the phone and listened intently and tried to look into the phone to see her.
One Saturday,Kayla called while we were out.She left a message.Tad was standing beside me when I pressed the button to listen to the message. He listened to her talking and cocked his head, grinning at me.I played it again for him.
A few days later,I was taking my shower when I heard the answering machine come on and Kayla leave a message.I thought it was strange when I heard her message repeat and the machine announce, "End of messages. " A few seconds later Kayla's message began yet again.
Wondering what was going on,I climbed out of the shower, wrapped a towel around myself and headed into the living room. There stood Tad,listening to the answering machine.I stopped and watched. When the message finished,he stood up with his feet against the edge of the low table, reached over with one paw (爪子) and slapped(拍打) the answering machine. The message came on again. He dropped back on the floor and listened happily.I told him "no, " and distracted (使分心) him from the answering machine while I erased (抹去) the message.
