My family,my wife,Joan, our two teenagers Hannah and Joseph, and I,live in Atlanta with our two dogs.
Ten years ago,we moved into our dream house,a very big three-story home.It was a beautiful place?but as our children grew up,our sense of togetherness(團結(jié))began to disappear slowly. In the big house,we sometimes seemed to be strangers to each other. One day when Hannah was 14,she became upset about the difference between the world's haves and the have-nots.She expected us to be "a family that makes a difference in the world, even if it's a small difference. " Joan asked her,"What are you willing to sacrifice?Your house?Your room?" Hannah said yes to both. After talking it over as a family,we decided to sell our house and move to one that was half its size and price and donate (捐贈)the difference to those in need.
After a lot of research,we chose the Hunger Project,a US-based organization. It works with villagers in Africa,Asia and South America and helps them fight against poverty (貧窮).Our money went to pay for building two centers. Each has a meeting place,a bank and a health clinic (診所).Together, the centers would serve more than 20 villages in eastern Ghana. We also traveled to meet the villagers and were blown away by their hard work and warmth.
To be honest,we were a little worried at first.Would we regard the new home as being too small for us?Or would we think we had given up too much? Two years later,I can tell you:It's the best move we have ever made. While we worked together on our family project,we became much closer. As Hannah said the other day,"We learned how to really trust each other. "

  • 2.Besides Yun Xiaolin, the new team consists of three other women in their mid-20s — Yao Ziqing,Liu Dejie and Dong Ning. They have been given the name of "fire rose" to represent the fact they are the first such small group made up entirely of women in the past 20 years.
In recent years, the traditionally male-dominated funeral industry(殯葬業(yè)) has seen a growing number of young women taking up the profession.Their inborn female strengths such as caring natures have allowed them to be trusted by more customers dealing with tearful losses. Some customers only want female technical staff because they know how to operate the machine and also know when to hand over a tissue(紙巾).
In addition to a heavy workload, running a crematorium(火葬場) is far more than turning on and off a cremator(焚尸爐),Yun noted.A crematorium worker needs to shoulder a mass of responsibilities such as machine repair and environmentally friendly disposal of remains.
Unlike Yun,who said she chose the work due to her curiosity,Liu,another crematorium worker, ended up in the profession since her family work in the funeral industry. After graduating from university, she chose to work in a funeral parlor in North China's Tianjin Municipality.
While women's working in the industry is still considered by many as a social taboo(禁忌),the four all noted that this uncommon profession taught them how the unavoid ability of death can actually be a positive force that encourages people to value life. They have also noticed that there are fewer stereotypes about the funeral industry today, especially when it comes to the women workers.
Liu noted she has not encountered much prejudice(偏見) during her work.Instead, many people are surprised and express respect when hearing that Liu can handle tough work skillfully in her job,a profession that many people in China are afraid to come into contact with.
Along with their efforts is a changing social environment led by new directions and social institutions in the industry, which have encouraged more people to no longer be afraid of this profession.

(1)Why are female technical workers preferred by some customers?

A.Because they know how to dispose of remains.
B.Because they have better performance than males.
C.Because they want to work in this field as equally as men.
D.Because they can show warmth while being professional.
(2)Why has Liu taken up the funeral profession?

A.She considers it as a way of earning respect.
B.She aims to change people's views on taboos.
C.She wants to encourage people to love life.
D.She follows in the footsteps of her family members.
(3)What opinion do the four women share in terms of their profession?

    A.They are doing something meaningful.
B.They work in fields they are fit for.
C.They have more difficulty in facing death.
D.They are at a disadvantage in the funeral industry.
(4)What can be inferred from the fifth and sixth paragraphs?

A.Women are mainly employed in the funeral industry.
B.Women funeral workers have gained more acceptance.
C.Male-dominated professions serve the public better.
D.Women technical workers have more targeted client groups.
