The Great Fire of London started in the very early hours of 2 September，1666.
    In four days it destroyed more than three-quarters of the old city，where most of the houses were wooden and close together.Over one hundred thousand people became homeless，but only a few lost their lives.
    The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of the King's baker in Pudding Lane.The baker，with his wife and family，was able to get out through a window into the roof.A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery into a small hotel next door.Then it spread quickly into Thames Street.That was the beginning.
    Why did it happen？Why didn't people stop the fire earlier？There are some reasons .First，almost all the houses were wooden.They could catch fire easily，second，the streets were not wide and the houses were close together .Third，there was a strong wind.
    The fire stopped only because the king finally asked to pull down hundreds of buildings in the way of the fire .With nothing left to burn，the fire became weak and finally stopped .
