One of the roles of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is to choose the host city for the Olympic Games. The host city election takes place in a country which does not have a candidate city for the Olympics in question.Except for unusual circumstances, the election is held seven years before the Olympic Games take place. There have been two phases leading to the election of the host city since December 1999.
Phase 1:applicant cities
Any city that wishes to host the Olympic Games must be proposed to the IOC by its National Olympic Committee (NOC),with a letter from the city itself.During the first phase, which lasts around ten months, each applicant city must answer a questionnaire to provide general information about itself. Then the applications will be examined carefully.A number of things will be considered, such as government support, public opinion, general infrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施),safety, accommodations and transport. The IOC Executive Board(執(zhí)行董事會)will determine which applicant cities will be accepted as candidate cities.Only candidate cities can continue with the procedure.
Phase 2:candidate cities
Candidate cities must provide a candidature(候選資格)file according to the instructions given by the IOC.After all the files are examined and the IOC Evaluation Commission(評估委員會)produces its report, the IOC Executive Board draws up a list of final candidate cities. The general assembly of the IOC then takes a vote on the host city.

  • 1.Childhood obesity(肥胖) is a medical condition which occurs when the weight of the child is disproportionate(不成比例的) to his age and height. This condition is mostly observed in children below the age of 15.
Putting on extra weight at a very young age can be linked to the modern lifestyle. In this fast life, people have no time to prepare healthy foods or even exercise.High calorie fast food has replaced the healthy diet.Children, today, prefer junk foods like pizzas to fruits and vegetables, which can lead to disproportionate weight gain.
Today children are hardly to be seen on the playground.Educational institutes cut down on physical education classes to offer extra classroom study.Playing computer games and watching television have become a favorite pastime activity for children. All this can contribute to weight gain.
Genes(基因) also play an important role in determining the body type.Research shows there're 80% chances of the child becoming obese if both the parents are obese, and 40% chances if either of the parents is obese.
Obesity affects children psychologically and physically. The psychological effects include lowered selfesteem(自尊),depression, fear of being disliked by parents and friends,or fear of being laughed at by the other children. This may also lead to the child shying away, eventually becoming lonely and choosing antisocial things like taking drugs.
The physical problems for an obese child may start a bit late. These include dangerous diseases such as heart failure, high blood pressure, etc.obesity can also lead to sleep disorders and eating disorders.
As for childhood obesity, prevention is better than cure,so some steps need to be taken to ensure a healthy life for the children.Healthy diet, proper exercise and developing good habits in the child are some methods to solve the problem of obesity. We can also ask doctors for their valuable advice about a healthy diet plan and how to lose weight.

  • 2.The real meaning of friendshipMary and I met in Grade 5 Class 4,having very little memories in mind of the time we had shared in Grade 3.Subjects changed, and friends changed. So we were all set to make new ones.Although she was not in the same class with me,her friends being there in my class. So she used to visit our class daily in the lunch break. We shared nothing but glanced at each other for a long time till in Grade 5 when I was introduced to their group and became a member.
I was soon able to make friends with everybody except this girl.In the beginning,we tried to be sweet in front of each other. But even this sweetness could not be maintained for long.Different choices, ideas and beliefs for anything made our friendship really unusual, even hard.I didn't like her.
I wanted to be good and friendly to everybody in my life, but I hated her,not only because she was not good to me but also because she did not find me good. One year passed and in Grade 6 Class 12,I decided to change the situation.I was tired of all this.So I decided to give this relationship a new name-"Best Dushmans".
It sounded funny and strange at that time. But that was what we were.I had never imagined that a change of name could prove to be such a miracle.Soon our life was filled with laughter and I did not even realize when this changed into real love.Yes,today we are best friends and we share our secrets in the first time.
This experience of my life has taught me that we should not give up any relationship before trying.Any relationship which is sour in the beginning proves out to be more special than the rest later on.Our friendship has given me real touch of emotions and relationships and we are happy now.

    判斷下列說法的正(T)誤(F):
1.The author was introduced to Mary's group and became a member when she was in Grade 5.

2.The author used to be unkind to Mary and other people in her class.

3.When the author gave a new name to their relationship, she and Mary became best friends.

4.The author suggests that we should not give up any relationship except after we worked hard at improving it.

  • 3.Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor.Whenever I speak to Chinese students they always say,"My spoken English is poor".However, their spoken English doesn't have to remain"poor".I would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary.Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary,if your attitude is positive.Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.
Second, they are afraid of making mistakes.Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking, because they are shy and nervous.Yet students should remember that their goal should be fluency not accuracy.Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using tenses to get your message across. But to talk to someone in English,as quickly and well as you can, even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense, but it doesn't matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you.
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive language learners.Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English, they passively wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor.If you have this proactive outlook, then, you will see English opportunities wherever you go.
If you don't use your English beyond the classroom you will forget that English you know.Remember USE IT FOR IT!You can learn how to speak English better by speaking English more.
