Do you like reading? How do you get the latest books or magazines? Can you imagine walking through a hot sandy desert just to borrow a book? This is real for people living in Garissa of Kenya in East Africa.
Before 2007,the librarian called Wylife Oluoch used to spend each day waiting for people to borrow some of the 24,000 books in his library in Garissa. The library had no shortage(短缺) of books, but people didn't come to read them.It was much too difficult and tiring to walk through the desert just to borrow books. After a lot of thoughts,he came up with a great idea.Oluoch strapped boxes of books onto the backs of camels(駱駝),and created the Mobile Camel Library.
The Mobile Camel Library started with just three camels (but more recently an-other three camels have joined the team) and it has been serving over one million people since 2007. These hard—working animals need little water and can carry up to 500 pounds of books across the sands.
The people of Garissa love the camel library and thank Oluoch for his effort.Twelve-year-old Maria reads the library's books carefully and always returns them on time. She knows the Mobile Camel Library helps many children read books easily and that it is a really great career. She also tries to inspire more people in the villages to help Oluoch run the Mobile Camel Library. As a result, some schools and the government have given away about 3,000 books to the library recently.
