It was 7 a.m.on 12 May 1998.Mohr had already scanned several packages listing dangerous materials aboard the train. The presence of gas would mean taking extra precaution when braking the 6,200-ton train. With explosive gas on board,it would be disastrous if the train came off the track. After a final inspection,Mohr jumped aboard. He was heading east, into a sun that promised a beautiful day for their 276-km run to Peru,Indiana.
At around noon that day, Marshall prepared to tackle some yard work.It was a beautiful day for it,she thought, gazing past the houses across the street. Some 45 meters away, railroad tracks shone in the sun.
Marshall began working in a patch(地塊)of soil.Sitting next to her, cheerfully running her hands through dirt, was her 19-month-old daughter,Emily. For a while, she kept turning to check on Emily, who played close at hand.Eventually, though,Marshall's absorption in her work became total.
Mohr approached the town where Marshall lived at about 1:45 p.m.and slowed the train to the 40-kmph speed limit. He activated the flashing lights and warning bell.Mohr had been through the town hundreds of times, but he grew extra cautious rounding the first curve.
As the train came out of the curve,Mohr noticed a small dot on the track about 200 meters ahead. He thought it might be a dog.Although it was against the rules to do so in the town,he began lightly tapping his horn. "Come on,puppy, move," he urged.
The toots (嘟嘟響)of a train whistle startled (使受驚嚇)Marshall from her yard work. That's odd,she thought. They don't usually blow the whistle through town. She glanced over to check her daughter, and her heart skipped.Emily was nowhere in sight.
Now,as the train approached within 100 meters of the object on the rail,Mohr narrowed his eyes, trying to make out what exactly was lying ahead. Then shock ran through him like electric current.

  • 1.    Nature,while beautiful, could also be unpredictable and merciless. But most importantly we bear in mind that in the darkest times, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel, just like Mrs.Evans' cabin light.
One bright summer day,my friend Peter and I decided to take an adventure into the unexplored paths of the Great Smoky Mountains.Blessed with rich biodiversity and fascinating landscapes, the national park seemed a perfect getaway.Little did we know that our casual(隨意的) hike would soon turn into an unexpected personal incident, forever kept in our memories.
We set off early in the morning, equipped with our backpacks and a map that was supposed to guide us through the winding paths. The sun was up,casting long shadows on the forest floor as we set off on our journey. We trekked(艱難行走),laughed, and wondered at the beauty of nature around us.
As we trekked through the thick forests, taking in the natural wonders around us,we couldn't help but feel a sense of adventure coursing through our body. The path was rough and rocky, but we persisted(堅(jiān)持) through the challenging landscape.
Midway through our exploration,we came upon a breathtaking waterfall, its shining waters pouring down the rocks in a quiet and peaceful melody. We sat down by the water's edge, taking a moment to get lost in the beauty of nature. The cool mist from the waterfall surrounded us,and we felt refreshed and energetic.
As the day went on,we trekked deeper into the wilderness, eager to explore every corner of this natural paradise. We were so absorbed in the beauty of nature that we just didn't notice our way and it seemed that we could not find the way back to the familiar part of the forest.
Frightened,we hurried to find our way back but the thick forests and winding paths only served to confuse us further. We tried to remember any possible signs that might lead us back.No sooner had we celebrated our return to the clear paths than something worse happened.

  • 2. One day a boy found a bird lying on the ground, squawking(叫喊) for help.Feeling sad for the bird, the boy petted it gently and wanted to help it,but he didn't know how since he was just 7 years old.So he took the bird in his hands, carried it carefully home and showed it to his parents. At once, his parents took action. They washed the bird and found it injured. With the help of his parents, the young boy dressed the wound. But it would need time and care for the bird to completely recover. As the bird had become dear to his heart, the boy immediately offered to care for the bird.
The boy named his new friend "Lucky".He began to feed the bird and he even ran out to collect grass to build a soft nest(鳥(niǎo)巢) for the bird. Then,he put the nest beside his bed.The boy and the bird were sleeping together and living together.Soon they became close friends. The boy always told it about his experiences in school and his secrets.Lucky,an extremely patient audience, usually responded to him with a few nods and chirps (嘰嘰喳喳聲).The boy's parents also loved Lucky. They regarded it as a family member.
In the course of time,Lucky gradually recovered and started to hop(腳跳) and jump a little bit and exercise its wings. That made everyone happier.Soon it would be able to fly.How wonderful!
But what then? The boy became thoughtful and started to think. "If Lucky started to fly,it could simply fly away one day." But that would not happen. The boy loved his friend so much that he couldn't imagine parting with it.The boy wondered, "I should surely stay with Lucky forever. But how?Keep the windows closed all the time? That was not practical."

  • 3.    We were visiting our daughter when we adopted our Boston terrier,Tad.An adorable puppy, just three months old,he became the family's center of attention. Each morning,as soon as he heard my daughter Kayla moving around downstairs,he had to be taken down for playtime before she left for work. When she came home from work,we had him waiting for her at the door.
After three weeks we left for home.On the drive,we let Tad talk to Kayla on the phone each night.Once home, every time we called Kayla or she called us,we always put Tad on.He scratched the phone and listened intently and tried to look into the phone to see her.
One Saturday,Kayla called while we were out.She left a message.Tad was standing beside me when I pressed the button to listen to the message. He listened to her talking and cocked his head, grinning at me.I played it again for him.
A few days later,I was taking my shower when I heard the answering machine come on and Kayla leave a message.I thought it was strange when I heard her message repeat and the machine announce, "End of messages. " A few seconds later Kayla's message began yet again.
Wondering what was going on,I climbed out of the shower, wrapped a towel around myself and headed into the living room. There stood Tad,listening to the answering machine.I stopped and watched. When the message finished,he stood up with his feet against the edge of the low table, reached over with one paw (爪子) and slapped(拍打) the answering machine. The message came on again. He dropped back on the floor and listened happily.I told him "no, " and distracted (使分心) him from the answering machine while I erased (抹去) the message.
