What is the most important building in London's history?St Paul's Cathedral?Westminster Abbey? The Tower of London? My vote goes to a grand 19th century building-the Crossness Pumping Station.
While Crossness Pumping Station may not feature on a postcard,it has perhaps played a bigger part in changing the lives of ordinary Londoners than any other building, saving thousands from death and diseases.
I have to admit Tm not fair.My great-great-great grandfather Sir Joseph Bazalgette designed and built Crossness, which celebrated its 150th anniversary on 3rd April. When we step inside,it looks more like a palace than a sewage treatment (污水治理) works, with red pillars (柱子) and elegant iron lattice (格子) in green and gold. But this was a building with a purpose:setting out to save a city drowning in its own waste,at a time when Londoners were quite literally seeing sewage coming up through their floorboards.
Let me take you back to London before 1865.The industrial revolution had swept through Britain;the urban population had swollen;people were living in overcrowded, unhealthy places. Some infectious diseases were filled with the place.Life expectancy was less than 20 years for people in some towns and cities and many people had no access to clean water.
Soon after the Crossness opened,London was as far apart as heaven and earth:an advanced system of 1100 miles of flowing water in underground tunnels, taking away 31 billion gallons of sewage per year and washing diseases off the streets of London town. This may seem common sense now,but at that time it was revolutionary thinking.
But it was not just a brave old fashioned Victorian engineering that changed the life of people in London;it is also a clever design that may bring the problem in other places under control now.It means there can be hope in a place like London that used to be years ago.We can change the life of people who live in dangerously unhealthy conditions.Over 748 million people around the world still don't have access to clean water, while about 2.5 billion people do not have access to a toilet. We may learn from the Crossness Pumping Station and make them live better.

  • 1.For several days Ⅰ(Jane Eyre) saw little of Mr.Rochester.One evening,I was invited to talk to him after dinner. There was a smile on his lips, and his eyes were shining brightly. As I was looking at him,he suddenly turned around and asked me, "Do you think I'm handsome,Miss Eyre?"
The answer somehow slipped from my tongue before I realized it: "No,sir."
"Ah,you are really unusual! You look like a quiet, serious little person, but you can be almost rude."
"Sir,I'm sorry.I shouldn't have given an immediate answer to such a question about appearances;I should have said that beauty doesn't matter,or something like that."
"No,you shouldn't!I see,you criticize my appearance, and then you stick a sly penknife under my ear!You have honesty and feeling. There are not many girls like you.Perhaps you have awful faults to counterbalance(抵消) your few good points."
I thought to myself that he might have too.He seemed to read my mind, and said quickly, "Yes,you're right.I have plenty of faults.I went the wrong way when I was twenty-one,and have never found the right path again.I might have been as good as you,and perhaps wiser.I am not a bad man, take my word for it,but I have done wrong. It wasn't my character, but circumstances that were to blame. Why do I tell you all this?Because you're the sort of person people tell their problems and secrets to,because you're sympathetic and you give them hope."
"Don't be afraid of me,Miss Eyre," he continued." You don't relax or laugh very much, perhaps because of the effect Lowood has had on you.But in time you will be more natural when you're with me,and laugh, and speak freely. You're like a bird in a cage. When you get out of the cage, you'll fly very high.Good night."

  • 3.To me,life without music would not be exciting.I realize that this is not true for everybody. Many people get along quite well without going to the concert, and listening to the record. But music plays an important part in everyone's life, whether he realizes it or not.Try to imagine, for example, what films or TV plays would be like without music.Would the feelings, the moving plot, and the greatest interests,be so exciting or dramatic?I'm not sure about it.
Now,we have been speaking of music in its more common meaning----the kind of music we hear in the concert hall. But if we look at some parts of music more closely,we discover them in our everyday life too----in the rhythm of the sea,the melody of a bird in the woods and so on.So music surely has meaning for everyone,in some way or other. And,of course,it has special meaning for those who have spent all their lives working on playing or writing music.
It is well said, "Through music a child enters into a world of beauty, expresses himself from his heart, feels the joy of doing things alone, learns to take care of others, develops his mind and makes his body strong."

(1)What does the writer say more about in the text?

    A.Life full of music.
    B.The importance of music.
    C.Life without music.
    D.The development of music.
(2)From the text,we learn that many people

A.go to the concert instead of enjoying music
B.get along quite well without music
C.don't realize the importance of music
D.think music would be less exciting than films
(3)What does the underlined word "melody" mean in the text?

    A.flying
    B.living
    C.looking
    D.singing
(4)From the last paragraph,we learn that music

A.is very necessary for our everyday life
    B.is very important,especially for children
C.can make our life exciting and dramatic
    D.can enter another beautiful world
