試題詳情
Read the passage and look up the underlined words in the dictionary. Then answer the question.
Deep-Sea Mysteries The most fascinating villains(惡棍) in fantasy stories are not purely bad.We would not be interested in them for long if they were. What draws us to a character is a mixture of motivations. If a villain behaves destructively,it is interesting for us to find out what makes him do so.
This is true of Captain Nemo,a central character in Jules Verne's famous fantasy tale from 1870,Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
Nemo, when we first meet him,is the villain of the story. He is the captain of a strange ship that seems to threaten the world civilisation. The Nautilus, which is like today's submersible,is first thought to be a giant whale. This"whale" damages a US ocean ship, leading the US government to call together an international expedition to find and kill the"animal".
We get to know Nemo when he catches three people:the French marine biologist Aronnax, his second in command Conseil and the harpoonist(叉魚者) Ned Land.
Nemo's actions suggest that he is a bad man.The truth, though,is more complicated.Nemo has a past that makes us more sympathetic toward him.He does not want to hold the men prisoners, but feels that if he is to avoid the pursuit of the expedition ship and the world's judgment,he must keep them close.
Together,Nemo and his crew,Aronnax,Conseil and Land have a large number of adventures underwater. These include discovering the famous lost city of Atlantis beneath the waves.
Nemo and the mission come to a head when the Nautilus accidentally sinks a ship that was in pursuit of it.This is a heavy blow for Nemo, who has no taste for killing. He becomes steadily more depressed and fails to pay attention to his command.
Aronnax,Conseil and Land survive a great maelstrom(大漩渦) in Norway. The fate of Nemo, however,is a mystery.Does he die in the maelstrom or escape with his life? That is a secret that Jules Verne keeps deep beneath these a.
